EltaMD UV Clear Sunscreen

Hi, my name is Weilan Johnson and I’m a board-certified dermatologist. I work for U.S. Dermatology Partners. I am going to talk to you today about EltaMD UV Clear. This is a sunscreen that is great for our acne-prone patients. It rubs in well, you can use products on top and it does not plug pores or worsen acne.
This product, in particular, has two active ingredients, one is zinc oxide and the other one is a chemical sunscreen called octinoxate, it's difficult to pronounce but it protects your skin very well from the sun. The two together provides UV protection SPF above 30 and broad-spectrum UV protection so it's an excellent form of sun protection without plugging your pores.
You just put a generous amount, usually a couple of pea-sized amounts on the fingers. I usually recommend dabbing the corners of the face and then just rubbing a layer in, rub it in until it absorbs. If we are applying a physical sunscreen again one with an active ingredient with zinc or titanium dioxide those sunscreens you can apply right before going out and you're fully protected. If it's a chemical sunscreen we do prefer that you apply it 15 to 20 minutes before you go outside so that it has time to provide the adequate protection against the sun. You want to reapply at least every one to two hours while you're outside or if the sunscreen does get wiped off or if you get wet and it gets washed off.
This product is great for patients that have acne-prone skin because it will not plug pores while providing very good protection against the sun. This product may not be the best for patients that have redness or have a tendency towards rosacea because octinoxate, we'll talk about in another video the difference between chemical and physical sunscreens, but this is an active ingredient that's a chemical sunscreen and because of the little bit of heat that it can produce it may not be as good for patients that have redness or rosacea. It also may not be great for patients that have sensitive skin or have a tendency to get rashes on their eyelids or their face. Hi Dr. Johnson! This is my favorite sunscreen! As you mentioned, it doesn't cause any breakouts or leave a white cast, unlike other sunscreens. However, I'm concerned about the chemical factor (octinoxate). There are some studies indicating that chemical sunscreens can seep into the bloodstream. Is this hybrid sunscreen safe?

Thank you for the informative video. Is it safe to use on eyelids?
