She didn’t even try to hide being frustrated with the translator. Most languages don’t have logical word-for-word translations of others. Chinese is one that can be especially tricky to translate back and forth, so no shit there’s going to be some interpretations that the translator will have to think about to make the translation understandable to him.

kittypie - One of my dear friends got pregnant with her second child, was very excited and told everyone, and then miscarried in her 2nd-3rd month. So with her third child, she didn't tell anyone besides a couple close friends, and some family, until her 4th month. I watched my own mother go through 4 miscarriages, each time she lost the child in the first couple months. Miscarriages aren't at all uncommon, especially with women 30+, specifically in the first trimester. So lots of women don't say anything until their second trimester. To force someone into announcing it is just despicable and heartless.

That's fucked. Her audience seems horribly toxic, too. They are all that one friend's mom everyone hates, who acts like everyone's mom (including the neighborhood and the school staff). Angry venomous WASPs. Some of the shots of the audience remind me of the reptile bar scene from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The movie sure, but mainly Ralph Steadman's artistic depiction in the book. Gruesome. Faces like cruel pre-avian predators, laughing at someone being mean to others and lapping it up like blood

I feel so bad for Mariah. There's a reason why most people wait for at least the first 12 weeks of pregnancy to go by before telling anyone - there's a ~20% risk of miscarriage in the early stage. When I was pregnant and word got out too soon, I was anxious for the first 3 months, knowing that there's a plausible chance that I at some point might have to inform everyone that things didn't work out. And that would've affected only 20 people. I don't want to know how it felt like to inform the whole world about something like that.

Right? I love languages - pretty good in Spanish and thinking of learning Japanese - and while I'd love to get better I know for a fact (and have been told) that I have an accent in my Spanish and that's likely how it's always going to be somewhat. Nothing wrong with it and considering we Americans seem to expect people the world over to learn our language (and not the other way around) the least we could do is be more polite and understanding if someone's English isn't 100% perfect and clear at all times. 🙄

Ugh the situation with the artwork really rubbed me wrong...my senior year of high school I painted something for a teacher who was really a positive influence on my life. In his classroom he had gifts from other students already, and my thought process was like 'well, he doesn't have to hang this up, I just want to let him know I appreciate him.' I gave it to him before winter break and he said he loved it. I got a hug. I felt satisfied that I'd done something for a person I looked up to. For all I know, he could have been lying about liking the painting, and that would be totally fine as long as he keeps it to himself. What matters is that he never took my artwork, showed it to the class and went 'how lame is this? It looks bad! c'mon, agree with me!' I think rejection like that would have destroyed me emotionally lol. I really hope the fan who made the painting didn't see that episode, or at least that it didn't bother them. That's such a mean thing to do, especially on live TV :(

I used to be very insecure so it was a huge boost. Saying all that - if he instead started insulting me or made fun of my work on his story on ig or anywhere else i'd probably never draw again and completly stop posting all together (might seem like an overreaction to you but i was young and v insecure and i can only hope that the artist who made Ellen that drawing didn't take what she said to heart and is still painting cuz that picture was actually very good when it comes to realistic art style :)))

I’m not fluent in Chinese but I’m familiar with the structure and some words. Here’s why what Ellen did was especially messed up. The translator was starting with the first question since the second one was a follow-up to it. That meant repeating the names of the instruments, which are western, so the translation involves a sound-for-sound deconstruction that can lengthen certain syllables. Additionally, the second question is also more complex than in english-the structure is “subject preposition verb” so it would have the same conciseness of “you additionally would like to learn what?” Put that together and it sounds long because of all the sounds she’s making, but it’s really just a simple translation. What a jerk.

I'm fluent in Chinese, and the part about the translator irked me a lot. When you know what the translator is saying, it's clear that she's doing a great job of making the questions/answers as concise as possible. Chinese has nuances in phrases that makes certain sentences longer than their English counterparts. Ellen cut her off and assumed that because the woman was taking longer, she wasn't doing her job properly. It kind of goes to show how ignorant/disrespectful she is. lmao edit: please stop bringing up political issues in the reply section of a youtube comment. Xochilt Aviles yup exactly! and chinese is even harder to translate from/into english. being such a privileged white woman with a massive platform she should use it for good rather than to make a joke out of ignorance towards other languages and cultures. the fact that she can't wait 30 seconds for someone to translate something she doesn't understand and instead tries to make fun of it is such a waste of a huge platform. it's also just completely ignorant. from what i understand you're fluent in at least 3 languages, and that's an amazing skill. for the translator to be fluent in a chinese language and english is also an amazing skill, and they're just trying to do their job. it's only human to trip up on translating something, i know from experience, because like you said half the time the words dont even translate properly. chinese and english are on like opposite ends of the spectrum too. it's hard enough translating those two, but also to be put on the spot, hurried and pretty much made fun of on national television? i cannot believe how privileged ellen thinks she is to be so ignorant to that she acts like that when she can only speak english.

As an art historian and artist, i can tell there was a deep amount of love and time baked into that image. Someone painstakingly shaded their faces, looked intensely at their references, and tried their best just to make their heroes happy, just to make them feel idolozed and loved. Even the basic form of the portrait is so lovingly created! And then, she just shits all over it on stage, in front of a global audience. That kind of shit can make someone stop painting entirely, stop improving their craft, stop doing what they love, out of shame. Fuck ellen's response.

The part where she embarrassed the Chines guy and the translator is even worse when you can understand what they're saying. The translator actually even condensed what Ellen said into a shorter question (skipping the part about Ukulele), and she was cut off at the exact same time she finished the sentence. Then the boy's response is also perfectly legit, he answered the question but wanted to slightly elaborate on it, which I assume would only take one more second if he wasn't cut off. That part legit pissed me off.

I got really annoyed with that as well. Ellen must be under the belief that like English, other languages are the same. So a question that is short is also short in another language when that isn't the case at all. I don't understand the language that the Chinese boy and his translator speaks, but I do speak French and English and those two languages are not the same at all. A question that is asked in English may be longer or even shorter in French depending on word usage or how French likes to shorten some of the questions or depending on how you want to ask your question. It's not only embarrassing for the translator, but incredibly embarrassing for Ellen. It shows just how ignorant she is.
