So, I'm in a screenwriting class, and the professor used to write freelance for star trek, and he says that if you compare your idea to something else, a producer is more likely to pick it up, but you have to specify what makes it different from the original show, too. So what I'm getting at is "American idol, but they're in costumes the whole time" is actually something a producer would eat up.

It’s somewhat of a competition show so although yes, they are trying to guess who the singer is, the main point of the Korean show is the competitive part and the singers showing how good they are before revealing their identity. It’s quite funny watching the difference between the original and spin-offs in the us and uk because damn do they turn the wackiness up to ten.

@@ongakira In South Korea, kpop group members cannot be said to be "singers", they are idols who sing. In the past, for the majority of South Korean people, an idol singer was not a real singer, idol vocal abilities were questioned, and not a few thought idols could not sing. If there are idols who have good vocal skills they understand it's all because of the needs of the group, they know there are at least one or two people who can sing well, and the rest are just beautiful people dancing. That's why Masked Singers are very important for idols back then, even in the early episodes many underestimate idols, if someone has a good voice they will guess that the person is an actor or comedian and not an idol. Solji EXID's victory in masked singer was like a hard blow to South Korean viewers because they didn't expect that she's an idol in a group with sexy concept. Unless they are soloist idols, then their singing skills are not in question.

  • @forever-winter

the masked singer is actually a reboot of “the king of masked singer”, a korean singing competition. in the korean version, the contestants can be really famous or pretty unpopular. the point of the show is to display that popularity ≠ quality. the american version kinda bastardized the concept imo

The funniest part is that, when you say ads every three minutes, I'm willing to bet that you mean ads for other Disney media. Because that's one that I remember from the Disney channels. They never had any non-Disney commercials. And it always struck me like... why would you spend so much time advertising your other stuff? I get that it's marketing and that they're a big corporation so they can get away with it, but why not like 1 ad break in the middle of the show? Why repeat the same commercials over and over ad infinitum? Maybe it's a ploy to increase viewer retention without needed to make more content to fill in the gaps where the ads are... but also why would they need viewer retention when they aren't getting paid for the ads??? Most of the ads are for other shows or movies which show up on that channel or one of the other ones like it. Sorry for the rant, it's just always confused the hell out of me.

I would compare it more to phones. Like how most people had landlines and cell phones in it's infancy stage that charged by the minute. You could even lease phones from your provider (my great grandma had a rental rotary phone she was paying for all the way up to her passing in 2005.) Now you can get a plan of unlimited talk, text and internet for $50/mo. Just like cable, landlines aren't really needed, unless you're using it for a business

Many Scott The Woz fans such as myself were so excited to see him on TV, then when we all tuned in to see him on national television, they ended up just not airing the episode which lead to a very funny tweet by Scott where he and all his friends in suits stared at a disappointed screen showing G4 but with no Scott. Then, after only a few months of airing Scott The Woz episodes, they fucking disappeared, which actually left a lot of people without jobs. At least from what I can remember. Rest in peace old Scott The Woz intro/outro music that got canned because of copyright, at least the new one slaps.

Actually the masked singer isn't a rip off of American Idol. It's a rip off of a korean show... called the masked singer. And that's creativity at its peak right there. Hi! Some edits: 1. I am aware that it’s licensed so not technically a “rip off”, however I think everyone who’s seen the original from Korea can agree that its a lot better than whatever the hell America did to it 2. Idk why people see “Korean” and immediately think kpop, but a lot of the people on the show aren’t idols at all! Also, let’s not bash an entire genre of music especially if you’re not really familiarized with it! 3. Please keep telling me about how this show is even worse in your country I love it haha

Just hearing “Spectrum” sent me into fight or flight mode. They are the only internet provider in my rural area and they know it. They charge insane amounts for WiFi and randomly send mystery charges to my card and overdraw my bank account, which then causes the bank to charge me massive overdraft fees. When I call to contest charges I’m on hold a few hours and get transferred an average of 4 times. No one ever knows what’s going on when you call. They deactivated my WiFi for no reason on accident and I spent 4 hours on the phone until 2am and got transferred 6 times and nobody could figure it out. When I finally got to the last person they figured out that the person three transfers ago put the issue into the computer wrong and listed it as an issue a tech would need to come to my house to fix. Unfortunately only she could fix it and their department closed while I was winding through the next few transfers. I had to call the next day and do the whole thing over again. They promised they wouldn’t charge me for this mistake. They charged me $150 dollars the next day and overdrew my bank account for the millionth time. EDIT: THEY DID IT AGAIN TODAY. WHAT ARE YOU CHARGING ME FOR I HAVE DONE NOTHING AHHHHHH

The TV station law thing is BS too. I'm a law student and we just read that case on Free Speech. The cable companies argued that the government infringed their free speech by making them host broadcast stations for free. The government was concern that broadcast (which is free) would become inaccessible since advertisers were leaving broadcast channels. In the interest of providing free public interest channels, Congress forced cable to host the broadcast channels. They whined about it as taking up a channel spot that could have hosted a cable channel. So it doesn't actually cost them money, it just takes up one of their channels which now they can't use to make money.

"King of Masked Singer" is a korean singing show competition that the US bought for "Masked singer". Having been working for a cable company, we lose money on TV services. It costs us more to provide TV to customers than we can recoup in advertising over 3 years. Typically the pricing is at cost and the only way to get any profit is to tag on the additional fees or get you to add internet. Then we cross our fingers and hope you don't call for a truck roll to your house since statistically you're likely to have a truck rolled to your house within the 2nd year of service (hence the 1 year contract rate)

FYI, I installed my own DirecTV dish way back in 2001 when you could hack the access cards and the FCC ruled that a landlord cannot prevent a tenant from installing a DBS dish on their property. There are some rules to it but basically if they say you can't have a dish, you can introduce them to a lawyer and the beautiful bureaucracy of the federal government. I printed out the regulation published by the FCC and my apartment complex stood down.

My family has never had cable, and we still get a decent amount of channels with just our antenna. THESE CHANNELS ARE FREE. How are cable providers charging customers for channels that they could get for free without cable? It makes absolutely zero sense.

Another KZreadr I follow ended up on American Idol and gave a breakdown of how totally fake it is. There was no audience when he filmed, all of that was added in post. The judges responses were edited. His performance was cut down only to the gimmick part, and all of the actual talent on show was cut out, as a mocking and laughing audience track was added in post. 90% sure this was all before COVID, too. That's just how they make these shows.

  • @0v_x0

    @0v_x0

They edit everyone to make them look worse or better, and they invent the audience reactions in editing. The audiences are apparently filmed separately and just given cues to follow (or they just don't have audiences at auditions and just use a clip library from actual live events). So I daresay the level of fakery and pre/post scripting is about on par with every other damn "reality" show.

The whole genre of crime shows actually caused a mega problem for forensics. When shows like NCIS and Law and Order became super popular, people were being called up for Jury Duty and legitimately using what they had watched on TV as reasons for deciding whether or not someone was guilty. It's super interesting! Like, collecting DNA and examining it can be super long process but because the shows made it look like such a quick turn around, the juridical system had a mega problem with people demanding particular types of evidence...because they'd seen it on tv.

@@electrogeek77 When I was diagnosed with autism (got diagnosed late in the game because of the bias against diagnosing females with autism, how fun), the doctor had asked me if I had heard of a show called The Good Doctor, and I said "All I've heard about it is that it portrays autistic people really badly." and she just kinda stumbled over that part and went on with telling me my diagnosis. I am so sorry, doctor, but that's all I had heard about the show! I didn't mean to make her feel so awkward!

I'm British, so this is all very strange. In the UK there's Freeview, which gets you access to a basic set of TV channels with ads for free. There's also several streaming services connected to TV channels that allow free access to their library with adverts, or you can pay to watch without adverts, like KZread.

The worst thing about commercials is that they don't even update them. Like commercials from 5-3 years ago are still playing on cable. I bet there's a dead company that still has it's commercials playing.

Drew, I went through this and so much more. A absolutely nightmare. I was screwed 2x by different providers over 2 years later saying I never sent equipment back. They sent me to collections but I still refused. I fought for about a year and won only because I flying found receipts of when I turned in equipment. All I got was sorry for the confusion. I demanded compensation and got none until I filed with bbb. Then they called me and gave me everything I was dry due. Comcast is known for this. And I learned Verizon too. My advice, save all docs. It saved me about 709

And the thing is, the originals are actually good shows!! Because they invite actual singers to be the performers and you have to guess their identity based on their singing and you get to actually objectively judge their abilities because you don't know their identity or if they're some superstar or an idol or whatever and that's pretty cool!!

My parents and I love crime tv shows, but I personally prefer the vintage ones, Columbo, Diagnosis Murder, Hart to Hart, and so on. But my dad especially loves watching those crime tv shows, from then and now, all of them 😂 I think I recognised every single one Drew mentioned when he gave the examples, cos my dad watched them. We live in Austria, so we also get German and Austrian crime shows and films. And my dad also likes watching the British and French crime tv shows/ flicks; and also that one Canadian one "Hudson & Rex" which is an adaptation of our famous Austrian crime tv show "Kommissar Rex" from the 1994-2004, which my dad also watched, obviously lmao. My dad would watch any crime tv show (or film) from any country, it only has to be broadcasted on tv lol; cos my parents and I don't use streaming platforms like Netflix. I do use streaming portals sometimes, but rarely, most of the time the free ones, or everyday just KZread lol.

I like it when the Algo serves a ad for a video where the content of the ad is specifically being bashed by the video. It's almost a waste of advertising dollars. Also a lot of what you mentioned is broadcast over the air free the procedural cop shows the medical dramas and some of the competition shows but you know that.
