Ellen is Walking to Mordor?! Are Virtual Walking Challenges Any Good? | Show of the Weekend

Ойындар

Adverts for online/virtual walking challenges pop up a lot, but are they any good? Does gamifying walking help, or even work at all? Are the rewards worth it? Ellen decided to give a Lord-of-the-Rings-themed one a try, and is on the purple sofa to report her findings to Luke and all you folks watching!

Surprised that they failed to mention how much you have to pay for each. I was excited and went to the site and was shocked to see what I’d have to pay, and then put the physical work in on top of that. You’re basically overpaying for LOTR merch and then having to perform physical activities on top of that. It absolutely reeks of corporate exploitation. “Pay us and then you do the work, we’ll give you something of lesser value if you can manage it!”

@@caseykraft2002For context, an official The One Ring from the movie costs almost 80 pounds. Like, the whole set is pricier than their other challenges, it's certainly not something I care to afford, so blame capitalism and corporation licensing all you want... it's just not overpriced when you compare it to other official merchandise.

Just a couple of tips for anyone who's been pretty sedentary for a while but thinking of starting up a walking routine: Get good footwear and make sure you have a plan b in case the way back happens to be longer than you think you can manage. There is nothing worse than getting in-grown toenails and cracked heels because you got adventurous on the way out and had to walk ten miles home in shoes that didn't fit. I usually walk fairly close to a rail line in case I suddenly get an urge to go further than I've gone before. That way I at least know I won't get lost and will also be fairly close to a train station at all times. Also: any kind of general body cream or similar is highly useful because it can be used both to treat cracked heels and chafing, both of which can be a real damper on wanting to go out walking two days in a row.

  • @caseykraft2002

@@caseykraft2002 If you're suggesting that I'm ripping off anyone, these were just some things I would have liked to have known before starting to walk because pain tends to be an even greater deterrent than a hurt butt. The things I mentioned don't even have to be that expensive. Cheap shoes that fit your feet are infinitely better than expensive ones that don't, and body cream doesn't need to be very expensive either and can be used to treat dry skin in winter. A tube tends to last me more than a year, too. Maybe you don't need these things and that's great, but some of us are in worse shape and that tends to cause issues when we try to get out of it; Walking for three or four hours can either be a breeze or a nightmare depending on your footwear.

I've certainly found them useful in terms of incentivising activity and getting me out of the house - I think it does depend a little bit on the challenges you pick, because when I've done the longer ones of around 100 miles, it has been occasionally easy to fall into a bit of a lull around the mid part and not push on, but it's certainly worth trying. The medals are genuinely great, they've evidently put some money into the design of them, and it's a nice way to gently incentivise and change habits, be it just giving that push to go to the shops rather than ordering a delivery or of getting off a stop earlier when I take public transport. I have combined them with Pokemon Go as a good way to get me out and about, and it's had an effect - they also have conversion charts for people doing different types of sport to the equivalent in miles so you can more generally convert what you're doing into progress along the track.

Oh man, I remember walking to Mordor. It was recommended to me as a way to stay engaged with walking as a cardio-workout. You log your distance, focus on perfect posture and collect 1800 miles of logged distance. Boom. Mordor.

If Ellen liked that I think she’d also like Zombies Run it’s a great running motivator. Or if you just want to walk they made another game The Walk. Both tell pretty good stories that progress as you move

I did the first chapter of Zombie Run, then hurt my knee, fell out of habit, and never got back in. For those not familiar, load the app, your GPS tracks how fast you're going. There are now zombies. Run faster, or get caught and lose supplies getting away.

I _loved_ “The Walk”. Found it when I was living somewhere where I had to do a lot of walking, partly because I had no car and US public transit sucks. The app entertained me during my necessary walking and sometimes I kept going just to find out how that segment of story would turn out. Wish the company would do more in that area, I’ve never been interested in the zombie angle.

Not wanting to defend Tom Bombadill - who I believe was based on one of his children's toys - but he's basically immune to the Ring's influence for the same reasons he would have been no good for carrying it to Mordor, vis, he's a hippy slacker who would get high and leave it in a box under a tree somewhere.

I recently listened to the audiobooks narrated by Andy Serkis and it was such a joy! But I absolutely loved hearing you both trash Tom Bombadil in this video. I've had almost word-for-word the same conversation you have about him here many many times in my life -- basically, every time I re-read FOTR. :)

I've also been getting loads of ads for these and have been considering it for a while. Might just do the first one as the whole lot is a bit pricey. Loved that some of the background music was from the Shire section of the non film affiliated 2002 Fellowship game. That takes me back!

Luke deadpanning the camera and exasperatedly sighing "Tom Bombadil" embodies the energy of anyone who has ever tried to re read the books only to fizzle out when they arrive at Tom "I might be God" Bombadil's chapter.

I've only seen two of the prequels, the desolation of smaug and the battle of the five armies, but I do know some of the lore behind the Lord of the Rings. The world was created by Eru the supreme deity of the setting and his angels with a song and that one of these angels called Melkor went rogue and renamed himself Morgath. One of Morgath's followers was named Mairon but he changed his name to Sauron. Morgath was eventually defeated, but Sauron saw it coming and chose to escape. Eventually making his return later. Sauron is also responsible for corrupting the nation of Numenor which prompted Eru to sink the island with Sauron still on it which didn't stop him. Sauron just used the one ring to build himself a new body.

Is everyone currently listening to Lord of the Rings audiobooks?! I'm currently on The Return of the King (the Andy Serkis versions), listening at 1.5x. Andy reading actually made the Tom sections reasonably interesting, and the poems/ songs worth not skimming over. It's been so long since I read them I'd been brainwashed by the movies. It's amazing how raw a deal Merry and Pippin get in the films!

A few good mountain bikes would have made quite a difference to the story. Imagine the Nazgûl on their horses trying to keep up with mountain bikes. Day one: Nazgûl reach Weathertop. Frodo camps in Eregion. Day two: Nazgûl reach the Last Bridge. Frodo decides Moria looks like a bad idea and heads down the Sirannon and Bruinen to the coast. Day three: Nazgûl reach the Bruinen. Frodo is already at Dol Amroth. Day Six: Balrog still sleeping, Frodo paragliding off Mt Doom.
