Ella Collins [Malcolm X's sister] Interview

Sarah Ann Shaw interviews Ella Collins, sister of Malcolm X. Collins discusses the childhood of Malcolm X and how she had raised him from an early age until his incarceration and subsequent conversion to Islam. Topics covered include Malcolm X's attitudes toward violence; women; and at the onset how the family had great expectations of Malcolm, from the time of his birth, given he was born the "seventh son" and the significance that carried in the family's ancestral Watusi culture.

in order to internationalize our scope, being anti-materialistic is prerequisite. if enough people do that around the same time, there's revolution on the horizon. with that said, unless your clothes is locally union sourced, the cognitive dissonance will continue to choke our humanity. made in Indonesia, Honduras, China, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Mexico, etc. that's where our clothes are made. and let's quit giving the inhumane, wealthy class the benefit of the doubt when they refuse to disclose factory locations. they're afraid we'll recognize the humanity outside of usa's borders and automatically flip on the international switch. i recognize Kaepernick for acknowledging his own humanity, and being uncomfortable enough to react, but he's not beyond reproach. we can't be afraid to question his disney ties. sign to disney and not call out the minstrel mouse? nope. and nike's been having a horrible reputation of human exploitation and would refuse to disclose factory locations. without Ella and her connection to her indigenous roots, and his all-female family household, there is no Malcolm Malcolm. women are the revolution.

A great and profound respect for this ancestor Mama Ella Collins. Malcolm spoke of her glowingly and respectfully in his autobiography. She raised him and loved him as Malcolm had the same admiration for her. She helped fund Malcolm’s pilgrimage to Mecca. In seeing this interview I can’t help but to feel emotional. Malcolm X is such that he resonates with my spirit. Of how he was to transform himself into a man of character and integrity and of truth. He was fearless even in his martyrdom. He had help along the way and his siblings helped to guide him especially his sister Ella.

You see it especially in the older siblings Wilfred and Hilda who never lived with Ella. The two also had the opportunity to be raised by their parents in a way the younger ones were not. Instrestingly enough, you also see it in the younger ones who had a shorter time with their parents but were still not raised by Ella; Reginald Wesley, Yvonne. @Ronald Macafee Lee also left out his connection to Ghana, and Kwame Nkrumah (which Malcolm stated in the book was one of the greatest moments in his life), and the formation of the OAAU in relation to the OAU. Nkrumah wanted Malcolm to contribute to the building of what would be the All-African People's Revolutionary Party. Malcolm chose to go back to the states and formulate the OAAU. Even while in the NOI, Malcolm was developing a Nkrumahist/Pan-African ideology. This was very clear in his speeches and writings around this time. The portrayal of Malcolm at Hajj to me was a means to be greenlit by Hollywood. Spike Lee fought Norman Jewison to make this movie, and ended up making a movie which omitted a lot of important factors in El Hajj Malik El Shabazz' life. He did the same sensationalized work any other 'ol Hollywood director would do. The real battles Malcolm had were largely ideological, and not the superficial ones Lee recounted in the movie.

Good interview. It's sad what slavery and servitude did to the man of color . I have noticed how most pale skinned people will sacrifice their lives for the benefit of the advancement of their offspring but we as dark skinned people we seem to be threatened if our children advance to a certain status. We say crazy stuff like "You are getting to big for your britches " and " He/She needs to be brought down a notch". You know life is about the future and we have seemed to forgotten the children are the future. We have to rid ourselves of that petty sickness called envy and jealousy and focus on shaping the hearts and minds of our youth .

You proved that we can be our own worst enemy. You uplifted white peoples above black peoples in a sweeping generality. You are blind. Blinded by everything you love about white peoples mirrored against everything you displease about black peoples. You ignore our magnificent rise against almost unworldly adversity. Last year a young black women on Instagram made a million dollars in a day selling her make-up line to other black women. This year she was outdone by another young black women who made a million in a few hours selling a natural skin care product to black women. Black people have been on a remarkable rise since slavery because we are a remarkable people. People like you only focus on the negatives feed to you by media. You compare a lost black youth in gang culture to a white CEO and then stereotype all black youths with the same comparison and basically make yourself sad. But how often do you compare a black nurse or black teacher to a white drug addict in a trailer park and give those black peoples the same admiration you give to the entire white race simply because their skin is white.
