It remains a disingenuous way to dismiss any discussion, as if it wasn't all too easy for these either war torn and/or post-colonial states with an uneducated, economically backward populace to fall into a bastardized version of socialism/communism with an autocratic cult of personality. Russia in particular was ripe for this, having had a largely feudalistic monarchy just a few decades prior to the toppling of Czar Nicholas II and his dynasty. I was deeply moved when I listened to this interview. Makena has always been a childhood hero of mine, and her songs were a big part of my life. I didn't realize that she had been banned from mainstream media because of her choice of spouse. Even though I was just a Venezuelan kid who adored Miriam's music, I have grown up and still hold her in high regard. This makes me feel connected to her and her experiences, as we are all part of a global community that continues to expand and intertwine every day.
