In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Elio e la stories tese, Live in Carroponte di Sesto San Giovanni
Plafone (English translation)
Maybe not everyone knows how pleasant it is
to invent a melody in the shower
Going up in pitch, even higher! Piece of cake? No,
'Cause everyone can sing the easier tunes.
Under a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen,
I'm free to increase my pitch even more if I want to.
I see up there that there is no more that nice jet of water:
Maybe I'll call the plumber
Because I spotted that some faucet's holes are clogged
Due to some evil limestone:
Two thousand little crazy splashes diverge.
A trickle here [and]
An unexpected tidal wave [here],
But now
It seems wise to quickly wipe down with the rag.
And here below, where I live,
There is already a stain on the plafond1 ceiling
That I paid two million of the old2 Lire.
Beware3 - in the next condominium assembly -
I'm going to put forward all my millage rates
We're gonna see then what
Your neighbour is capable of
He is well-behaved, nice, you name it!
But - when he gets angry -
You are in such troubles!
* 1.In particular, the Italian term "Plafone" is the italianized version of the French word "plafond" (plat fond), which corresponds to the English term "Ceiling".
* 2.Lira was the currency of Italy between 1861 and 2002.
* 3.lit. "but"
* 4.Each joint owner of a condiminium has a vote which weight is proportional to his/her millage rates.
* 5.lit. "who your neighbour is"
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

The singer is a transverse flute graduate at the Milan Conservatory. He occasionally sang opera, too, and at the 2008 Sanremo festival he sang "Largo al factotum" with his band in a comedic way ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/p36ZrJaSmbmsqps.html ): the highlight of the show was when he made a long pause after the first two syllables of the name Figaro (hinting at the female reproductive organ in Italian slang)

The main melody was initially written and thought to be played and sung through a vocoder, as the keyboard player (Rocco Tanica) stated during an interview. The range is therefore definitely wide for human voices, but the female singer Paola Folli in this live version (Antonella Ruggiero in the studio version) did an excellent job.

Funny thing about the name of the song: Plafone, which if I'm not mistaken is a france word, is pronunced correctly when speaking Italian, just as you did pronunced it, but in this song it's pronunced badly on purpose in order to make a hilarious effect.

The whole point of the song is the stupid lyrics, the fact that stupid dialogues are backed by actually really good music is integral part of the performance. Without the lyrics, you can’t appreciate Elio’s genius

No, the point is that Paola and Antonella have a different register (frequency range) Antonella is a soprano and plafone is designed for Antonella, not for Paola. Paola can sing it quite well for his voice register, she is amazing as well.

Apart from Elio e le storie tese being an amazing band of poliinstrumentists capable of sudden odd signatures, modal changes and clever lyrics, it's important to remember that italian prog from the 70's was probably the most beautiful prog ever, in my opinion better than many english speaking bands (that I also love), but unfortunately the italian language didn't allow it to become worldwide famous. I'll search among your videos to see if you reacted to the Concerto Grosso I and II from New Trolls or "Come un vecchio incensiere all'alba di un villaggio deserto" from Alan Sorrenti (than after that left prog and made the big money with disco/pop)

Hi, I suggest another song of theirs: La canzone mononota (The monotonous song) competing at the Sanremo festival some years ago. kzread.info/dash/bejne/noalkraziaXYmdY.html it is a technically very interesting "joke": the main theme is simply a C repeated practically endlessly wanting to demonstrate that with just one note you can do a lot of things, but throughout the song they have fun changing the whole contour (accompaniment, rhythm, speed, atmosphere, minor octave, major octave , excess, diminished etc etc ... and you can also pretend that the song is over...) then inserting into the text their usual and much loved nonsense (the monotonous song is democratic, opposed by dictatorships, pay attention to it, the Cuban anthem is full of notes...and they play the beginning of the Cuban anthem...when in reality ANY anthem is full of notes...). To understand it well, I recommend you download the text from Google, translate it with chatgpt and try to follow their magnificent delirium Have fun!

This was a new acquaintance for me but a pleasant one. The rest of the album seems to be more like humor rock (unfortunately?) but then again, so was Zappa. But if you still want to continue with good Italian music, here is a recommendation: Felice Lichene by Patrizio Fariselli, who was the keyboard player of Area. The song is from the 2001 album Lupi Sintetici E Strumenti A Gas which is one of my my all time favourites. The music is a mixture of prog, jazz and italian Commedia dell'arte, very theatrical. Here's the link: music.kzread.info/dash/bejne/m6yGpdKwhtydpLQ.html The opening track Pangea is more accessible and a great mixture of Italian folk music and prog if that is your cup of tea: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o3Wp1bd_qJa5XcY.html

Great band, thought the best word to describe what they have done in their career would be the french "pastiche". At the core, their music is a very heterogenous mix of bits and pieces of inspiration from all the Italian and international popular music that the band members have grown up with, often with very obvious citations in the lyrics and/or melody. All done with mastery and, as in every good "pastiche", a strong taste for parody and humour (the band also has connections with the Italian "stand up comedy" scene, right from their beginnings). Not surprisingly, when asked from a fan who liked this very song "When will Italian Prog be back?", the keyboard player answered: "as late as possible, I hope!".
