Electronic drums: drumKAT, Tama Techstar, Native Instruments ABBEY ROAD 80s DRUMMER, UNA CORDA

drumKAT 0:00
Tama Techstar pads 2:36
This pandemic means that more of us are home more of the time. ...Which means there are a lot fewer opportunities to play acoustic drums without bugging everyone else in the house. So, I've spent a little more time with electronic drums.
The playing here is not too fancy. I was mainly exploring a few new sounds.
First up, I loaded the Native Instruments ABBEY ROAD | 80s DRUMMER instrument and substituted some Octobans for the toms. I love the sound of Octobans, but I could never actually justify buying an actual acoustic set.
Next, you'll see a clip with some Tama Techstar pads. I love setting these up-I wanted a set of these desperately in the '80s, mostly because I liked the way the pads looked (still do). I also love playing them because I get to use the same muscles as when I play an acoustic kit. But they're not nearly as sensitive as the drumKAT.
On the Tama Techstar clip, I'm using the Native Instruments UNA CORDA instrument-a customized piano that uses one string per key. It is a gorgeous instrument, and this little clip don't do it justice at all. But I enjoy loading melodic instruments of all sorts into an e-drum setup to spark some new ideas.

I love the video because you have the lowest latency and most response of any electronic drum kit I've ever seen drumkat has always been the one. You're selection of equipment is tops and playing beautiful.

Hello Greg, I hope everything is going well! First at all, you are an amazing drummer, I do not know which part I like more, specially because the combination of acoustic cymbals with that plugin is amazing and your drumming is PERFECT! Greg, I have a some questions about your Alternate Mode eHAT and eKIC. 1. Is it difficult to configure the eHAT for the chick and splash in the DrumKAT? I really want to work with the eHAT with addictive drums 2, maybe I am not so interested in the splash sound but I really want to get a good expression of the HiHat (open-close) and a good chick response. 2. What about the noise level of the eKIC, It sounds very expressive and is a wonderful device but... I leave in an apartment and maybe I can get some problems with my neighbours, and this issue makes me go for the Roland KT-10, but if the eKIC is not noisy I will go for it. Thank you so much for your time and attention, I really appreciate it. Really amazing to meet drumKAT users, it is a wonderful product with amazing benefits. Greetings from Colombia, South America!

Hi and thanks for the note. I have not tried to set up a splash note with the eHAT, but the drumKAT manual does say that you can do that (see page 24 on the PDF manual: www.alternatemode.com/manuals/dk3.5manual.pdf). I honestly don't get very deep into the capabilities of the drumKAT, but I should totally learn how to set up the splash sound, because I definitely use it with my acoustic drums. More generally, I would definitely say that the eHAT works with the drumKAT better than the Yamaha HH65 electronic hi hat pedal I have. (Before that I was just using one of the drumKAT edit switches for the hi hat.) But when I play electronic drums, I'm not doing much with my left foot in terms of expression. I really just need the pedal to close/open/chick with the same feeling as when I'm playing an acoustic kit, and without mis-triggering. I can get that with the eHAT. It did, however, take a bit of fine-tuning in terms of the physical position of the trigger in relation to the bottom of the pedal that's contacting it. A few millimeters in one direction or the other, and you'll get a different response. So, positioning the trigger is everything. On the noise level of the eKIC: It's definitely quieter than my previous trigger, an old DW Drums EP-1, which had a hard surface for the beater to hit. This eKIC trigger surface is pretty soft. Now, I just saw a video of the KT-10 on KZread. I think if you're using a felt beater with the eKIC, the sound from triggering should be a bit quieter than the KT-10. However, there will still be a bit of a thump from the whole process-about as loud as you tapping your foot on the floor. So, if you've got neighbors below you, and you're playing on a wooden or tile floor, they'll probably hear it-but it won't be louder than playing with your sticks on the drumKAT itself. And putting a thick rug beneath the beaters could make that thumping quieter. I hope that helps!

@@schmargle Thank you so much for your information, this is very helpful and not only for me! Good point when you mention the position of the eHAT, I was thinking to add like a foam or something in the metal part to make it a little bit more smooth with the pedal and I hope not to disturb my neighbours with the eKIC, basically both devices are affordable and works really well. Thank you so much again for your answer, I wish you an amazing day and keep posting more videos!
