Electrical Fire On Our First L-39 Formation Flight!
We kick off Oshkosh with our first fighter jet formation flight in the L-39 with a Marchetti S.211 and a Shorts Tucano, but hit a bit of a snag with an electrical fire and the airport being shut down! L-39 Part 6.

If I called for a go-around as a co-pilot, and you continued as if nothing happened, that would absolutely be the last time we flew together. We are all going to read about you in an NTSB report at some point with this sort of attitude.

You are right, this was 2 vid on this channel, and sorry but report, and all the rest, never came back.
“Son, your ego is writing checks your body can’t cash!”
@mattguthmiller Hi Matt. I've watched your vids for some time and always enjoyed them. As an airline pilot and instructor with well over a decade of experience, my spidey sense is starting to tingle. I have flown in the States but not to Oshkosh and flown jets but not the L39 so in these areas I'm unqualified to comment. My assumptions are that you're an intelligent guy and you're building a popular channel, and also that you may be becoming aware of a shift from largely positive comments in early vids to some mixed comments more recently. I don't know if you're interested in feedback. As you take on more complex flying over your flying career, your skillset usually grows in concert resulting in a reduction to your risk profile over time. Your transition to jets is a huge step - especially older gear that can be less forgiving. The energy management becomes more complex. If you don't think further and further ahead of the aircraft, you give yourself less and less time to respond to changes. And your ability to respond is further reduced by the envelope in which your jet must remain. At the end of this vid, with the instruction to join straight in, it appears that everyone's mental model of what's happening next breaks down and the seconds of confusion is palpable. You all rebuild the plan quickly enough (you, your back seater and the other aircraft), but from the outside looking in, you guys had to shoot from the hip more than you'd perhaps have liked. On short final, the interaction between you and your back seater about going around or continuing is interesting - this speaks to you having different ideas of what constitutes a problem and I can't tell whether he's speaking as an instructor, a friend or something else. More clearly defined roles from a CRM perspective and a clear brief eliminates the vast majority of this type of communication. The key thing is that during these moments, your exposure to risk is increased and your ability to handle a startle event or to manage and fly your aircraft is reduced, however momentarily. Also, in these moments if your luck turns, you can find yourself very quickly stuck up an effluent river without a means of propulsion. I'd hate to see Juan Brown having to do a vid on your wreckage. Up for discussion is whether you have a responsibility to demonstrate a level of professionalism around self-critique and this could be an editorial choice for the channel. Steve at Flight Chops is excellent in this regard. You're going through a really cool change in your flying - seeing someone learning during and after flights sets an excellent example for those who follow your vids with more than a passing interest in aviation. Enjoy the jet and don't bust your arse 8)

@Matt Guthmiller Just food for thought my friend i've been noticing the same here and as im scrolling down in each video. Now I enjoy this content ALOT but, it would really put a damper on my and many others doubt by sharing/doing a video detailing your whole preflight, CRM, etc. It might not be as sensational or get the views/ad revenue that these videos do but it may regain some confidence from your viewership. Better yet having another fellow youtuber or instructor that would like some exposure on the platform critique and provide constructive feedback in a video. It would go a long way. There will always be the armchair pilots chirping away in the comments at you but those who truely care and enjoy watching your videos will take something like that in strides. Leads by example for those you aspire to be just like you. Besides, my understanding is, you can always be a better pilot and always further your training. Might as well share that in detail no matter how boring it may seem.

The lack of clear communication along with the half-arsed decision making shown in this video is disgusting. "I think I got this" is a statement no-one at the controls of an aircraft should make. If you're gonna fly formation, know drag recoveries. Especially somewhere like Oshkosh where an overhead break is going to gum up the rest of the recoveries.
@mattguthmiller
Жыл бұрын
Overhead doesn’t gum up anything, it’s much more efficient, but occasionally some controller thinks it might. A drag is not part of either FFI or FAST (the two groups tasked by the FAA with self regulating civilian airshow formation standards), and both groups prefer a downwind break (in this case I suggested a break from base) to separate the flight in a structured, predictable way, as drags have been the source of several formation accidents, hence the great deal of communication here to ensure everyone was precisely on the same page.

If the guy in the back really believed you should go around, he needs to be more assertive , and you need to listen. I’m feeling you are close to saturation at times
When a crew member calls go around, you go around! Either you of you co pilot is not seeing the full picture and right there on short final isn’t the place to figure it out, for a safe approach you both need to be seeing and thinking the same things to back each other up. I’m guessing some ref speeds and go or no go points needed to be briefed and weren’t since you guys got cramped in there. For me this was a good example to see on the reasons to prep for the approach long in advance. As a team all 3 crews should have not accepted the approach until it was fully briefed between everyone. The guy in the back needs to be WAY MORE ASCERTIVE! Either call the go around or don’t, half measures often make things worse. “Feel free to go around, we might just… I’m…” 17:01

KUES is our local airport. We were up at Oshkosh for the week too. Glad to have you local for a little while.
Great video..thank you..and great flying!
Not the best examples for aviation being set here - You're refused the overhead break and the response to "How are we going to do a straight in?" was "I don't know"? Seriously - You guys should have had a plan for that and any other possibility before you took off! - Especially when dealing with the constantly changing situations every day at Oshkosh - Honestly guys - you really think cobbling this together inside of two miles when you were still obviously confused about how it was going to work out was a good idea? Finally how many suggestions regarding "speed" and "go-around" are you going to ignore with a "I think I got this" response? Again all a result of having no plan for any of this prior to taking off. The lack of CRM here is inexcusable for this level of flying and if even the smallest thing had gone wrong the FAA would be having a hay-day with what you guys provided them to hang you with. You need to quit worrying about how many clicks you're going to get on your video and take a hard look at how and what you are portraying here. One distraction is all it takes to turn a great day in aviation into a tragedy! People and aircraft are lost every year at Oshkosh with guys more worried about "looking good" than making sure they are operating safely!

If a student on a first introductory (formation) flight didn’t like an approach to landing would you go around? This particular situation is not something that’s ever required in a formation flight outside of Oshkosh (and was the only instance of it there), so no it’s not something anyone thought to brief and required extensive clarifying communication to execute beautifully. I imagine all of your flights to be planned for every one of a million possibilities and executed perfectly every time though.

Absolutely, and this is not the first example of them getting behind the curve. Fail to plan, plan to fail.
@ronhunt2477

This has nothing to do with a student or first introductory flight at any other airport. The reply to "How are we going to do a straight in?" was "I don't know" Student or not that should have been enough to have 2 and 3 return to orbit Warbird island and each come in as a single ship instead of this cavalier - make it up as we go attitude. Your snippy reply about all my flights being "executed perfectly every time" in response to my post, with out having any idea of my experience, was completely unnecessary, but in reality sadly, an answer in and of itself. I'm sorry that you are unable to see past your response to the issue that I have pointed out. This is a much different level of flying your getting into Matt, and it requires a much higher level of attention to detail. I prefer to see you continue to make aviation videos that promote safety and aviation rather than see you become a statistic over trying to "look cool". @mattguthmiller Ever thought of becoming an Experimental Test Pilot?
I think you guys blame Matt for who you wish him to be but he is not. He circumnavigated the world at 19 and founded a company at 12. He is not an instructor-like pilot who would fly a C172 on a pattern for 20.000 hours making perfect landings after 20 years of such flying. He is an explorer and an adventurer and yes, this is much more risky than flying on the same pattern for 20 years. I believe he does enough to make it safe enough and I am pretty sure he will have even more advanced flying-wise goals in the future. Does he statistically have more chances to kill himself in a crash than a an INS with a 30y experience flying the same pattern on a Cessna? Sure. But this is a calculated risk I believe. I do not think he is doing his flying unprofessionally. The comms are neither airliner-type nor military-type but that does not mean they are inefficient. He flew many aircraft before and has a lot of experience. Airplanes can kill anyone, with any kind of experience and I think Matt does a lot to be on the safe side but also crosses borders and takes challenges and I not think that is wrong.

With ATC as bad as this, you really need to buzz the tower once in a while, to keep them in line.
To all you people claiming this video shows "unsafe behavior" I don't get it. Could the landing have been planned in advance for every possible scenario? Yes but they'd never have gotten off the ground and probably would still be planning for this short flight till this very day several months later. Let me put it this way. When Sully Sullenberger took off on flight 1549 do you think that both he and the copilot planned to hit a flock of birds that would disable both engines? I don't think they did. However, they followed the checklist, their training and used their experience to get them to a safe outcome. They even tried a few things not on the checklist to restart the engines before making the ultimate decision to land in the Hudson. As far a CRM goes both Sully Sullenberger and Jeff Skiles worked together to try the restart of the engines and then make for the Hudson. However, Jeff Skiles only had 37 hours flying in an Airbus A320. Thus, while Sully used Skiles as a resource (especially because he was just trained) it was Sully who would make the ultimate call on how they were going to safety land the plane. Just like in flight 1549 something unexpected happened. In this case it was a straight in landing instead of the preferred by Matt overhead break. Matt and the other pilots used their training, experience and CRM to make a safe landing. Guess what? They had a safe landing. While the backseater in Matt's plane said "we might just go around and feel free to go around" he did no say "go around" in any way as to alert Matt that a go around was absolutely necessary. Again we had a safe landing. I'd also like to point out that it is pretty clear the back seat pilot probably does not have as much experience as Matt. I suggest maybe watching the video again to those that disagree. Look at the spacing on the landing as it looked pretty good. I also have no doubt that any of the pilots would have made a go around had they actually needed too. Great video Matt!
