Electric Truck Transformation : From Prototype to Production
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
We're thrilled to share a major milestone in our journey - making our very own truck, Topsy, road legal and officially turning Edison Motors into a truck manufacturer! We're in Ontario, and it's finally time to bring Topsy home.
🔧 The Challenge: Topsy wasn't considered a truck by the government. We needed a VIN number and registration, which meant tackling an enormous amount of paperwork and parts testing.
🎉 The Triumph: We succeeded! The government issued us a VIN and registration. We're not just building trucks; we're legally selling them too!
🚛 The Shipping Saga: Remember the shipping fiasco with Topsy's headache rack? We've learned from it and now partner only with the most professional companies for shipping Edison products.
👷♂️ The People Behind the Scenes: Meet Stephan, a driver who embodies professionalism and care in handling our products. It's all about the image and trustworthiness in this industry.
🔩 The Final Touches: We're down to the wire - literally! Our team is wrapping up some last-minute wiring details before shipping Topsy to Cornell for its VIN and license plate.
⚔️ A Fun Detour: While the wiring gets sorted, we're off to Medieval Times for some entertainment. Knights, jousting, and a break from the grind!
🔌 Wiring Woes: Our journey hasn't been without its hiccups. We had to upgrade Topsy's wiring harness to a more scalable, manufacturing-friendly version. Witness our troubleshooting process and the final victory in getting the motor spinning!
🤝 Community Engagement: The excitement Topsy generates is unbelievable! We're careful about privacy, though. Don't visit Matt's shop expecting to see Topsy - this video will be released after it has left.
👨🔧 The Inspection Process: Topsy underwent a thorough inspection in Quesnel. This included checking mechanical soundness and ensuring it meets all regulations.
🛠️ Final Fixes: We faced challenges with the wiring and TCU, but with persistence and expertise, we're resolving these issues. Watch as we dive into the technicalities and finally get Topsy running smoothly.
🎬 Closing Thoughts: It's been an intense but rewarding journey. From paperwork to physical alterations and unexpected setbacks, we've managed to turn Topsy into a legally drivable truck.
Stay tuned for more updates from Edison Motors as we continue to innovate and drive forward in the world of truck manufacturing!

🔧 Built by Truckers, for Truckers 🔧
Founded by Chace Barber and Eric Little in 2016, Edison Motors is a testament to the trucking spirit. Beginning with a 1969 Kenworth Logging Truck named "Old Blue," they journeyed from Merritt, BC, hauling logs to the Yukon and drilling rigs in Alberta. Frustrated with newer trucks, they rebuilt classics from the frame up, expanding into power generation and off-grid solar systems in 2019. Their journey led to the creation of the Edison Truck, a robust electric truck tailored to logging and heavy vocational industries.
🔩 Upgrade Without Replacing: Edison Electrification Kit 🔩
Keep trucks on the road longer with the Edison Electrification kit. Upgrade your driveline to electric without replacing the entire truck. Ideal for vocational applications, this kit is a cost-effective solution. Unlike other electric trucks, Edison Motors offers customer choice. Choose between Rebuilding (utilizing existing cab and frame rails) or Remanufacturing (brand new frame and chassis).
🚚 Payload Efficiency: The Weight Balance 🚚
Edison Trucks match the weight of a normal diesel truck. With reduced motor weight and additional fuel balancing out battery weight, experience efficiency and increased payload capacity. The L series, though slightly heavier, remains comparable to a normal diesel truck.
🛠️ Keep Your Equipment with Rebuilt Trucks 🛠️
For vocational trucks, keep your equipment with a rebuilt truck. Edison's e-pto and control system integrate seamlessly. No need to replace your entire body when upgrading to an electric truck.

You have no idea how badly I want y'all to succeed. If even a portion of what Edison Motors stands for (common sense solutions, repairability, ease of maintenance, customer service, treating people like humans and not numbers, etc) leaches its way into the trucking industry as a whole, it will be a game changing.
The load on that flatbed is HUGE! Those Tonka trucks are truly a work of art. 2:34

Fun fact, Tonka trucks were made originally near lake Minnetonka. We would walk by the old factory building as a kid growing up. Eventually they moved manufacturing to Mexico / not in Minnesota. But yeah, Minneapolis is where Tonka trucks come from.

Something I think everyone is glossing over; you guys just fought, and spanked a multi billion dollar industry with their coffee budgets. Im damn proud of you all!
As a Dutch person, I was surprised to read "klompen uit" at 1:17. It means "take your clogs (wooden shoes) off" or roughly "remove your work shoes" in this context.
When you graduate to construction mode, consider have a test jig with the actual shipped components for a 'plug-in" final check before installing onto the chassis and and you can then advertise that each harness has been field tested and certified. In my previous career as part of a UL certified panel shop, there were two initial tests we performed that captured 99 percent of the errors. One was using a calibrated for torque screwdriver to make sure all the lugs and terminal blocks were tight(including any empty ones). The last was a pretty harsh "tug" test on every wire to ensure nothing would vibrate loose. Congratulations on the beginning of a wonderful product.

This is something that usually you just offload to the wire harness shop once you have a big enough quantity ordered that they'll either make cablescan fixturing or you give them something to test with. In theory, cable scan should be more than adequate. It's best to have the guys making the cable test them because then they can just fix it.

But sometimes a bad connector/wire will still make it through. Plugging it in crooked for example can push something crooked and make it intermittent etc

Build self test on track. Hours not weeks. Treating topsy as what it is "extremely expensive equipment with requirement of repair being done in hours not days or weeks." Otherwise they can buy JD
I wire cars from scratch and just had an issue with one this week. The terminal crimps looked perfect but for some reason there was no continuity between the terminal and the wire on two wires. Cut off the terminals and crimped new ones on. Works perfectly now. One bad connection and it can cause all kinds of frustration. Good on finding the problem!

Im a pretty capable wrench, but I've been chasing a canbus fault for over a year in a personal car of mine. Intermittent window function, but I can command thru the BCM with a scanner or use the lock/unlock to roll up/down with the key. But the switches only work when they feel like it. Frustrating doesn't even begin to cover it 😂😂

Also props to you, I'm an electrician by trade (but also our company mechanic lol) so I have mad respect for you, building harnesses from scratch! I've done some repairs and that alone was enough for me. Could I do it? Yep. But would it take so long it wouldn't even be worth it? Oh yeah. 😂
Hi guys I missed the wright brothers ,now I am witnessing the Topsy twins ....What a wonderful day in Canada.

I love that Topsy is loved by other truckers. Hope to see more the the big white elephant.
Edison Motors Truck Manufacturer has a nice ring to it ! = ) So stoked for all of you involved. And anyone with the open mind and sense of humour to strap a Tonka on the back of an otherwise empty trailer would get my support and custom any day. As Stephan said, "It makes people smile...." and it costs nothing = )
Great Job Edison has designed and built a "Mona Lisa" We look for Edison to be a world wide success.
I'm seeing many people saying Edison Motors is a scam! I don't know how many videos they've watched. Probably zero. Forming an option on limited to no information! Nice work gentleman!!

I can't express how much I enjoy this company
Watching this from the start of production to you officially being a manufacturer has been the coolest journey. This is genuinely going to change the whole industry and I am so happy I have been able to watch this unfold you guys have made such accomplishment here.

I hope you guys are hauling some good loads with it. Especially if you can get a regular diesel truck following it with a similar load. I can just see Topsy just quietly going up a steep grade with a full load and have a regular logging truck working hard trailing behind.
Yes! Let's get this truck in production! I wanna see more Topsy on the road. I back this 100% and I don't even like big rigs. I just don't want to see another fiberglass coffin box
I love the truck drivers accent and little kid truck for the kiddos ❤
1:07 the spikier the lug nuts, the more professional the company 😅 Congrats on the vin and registration guys! You did it!
So proud of you guys, being a die hard "vintage lover" (all mechanical, trucks, and equipment) I have grown to hate e-vehicles, and computer controlled, planned obsolescence crap. But topsey is the first hybrid that I am genuinely excited for, even though it will be 30-50 years before I can afford to drive one seeing the progress and build quality is inspiring.
Put this truck into the game snowrunner officially!
You guys have revolutionized the game! Not only are you real people but you guys understand things happen mechanical failures happen and being able to work on the rig easily is huge, applying already tested and proven designs is huge in my opinion. I wish the best of luck to y’all and hope these trucks take over the roads everywhere. Patent everything so nobody can rip you guys off and try to take the credit you guys deserve. Cheers dudes🍻
Can’t wait to see Topsy haul her first load!
I wish all of you at Edison nothing but the best. This is just awesome to see. I can’t imagine the amount of hard work. Not just in the building of the truck, im sure that’s the easy part. But the mountains of paperwork to actually become a legit truck manufacturer. Awesome stuff
Awesome news guys, making me proud to be a Canuk.
I didn't expect the UK national anthem at the end, I leapt up to salute and spilt my cup of tea!
The trucker's Air Freshener Game is on point.
Seeing Topsy backing up to a closed door at the end of the video totally reminded me of Star Trek III, where Kirk and crew are stealing the Enterprise from Space Dock. Kirk: "Scotty, the doors... The doors, now!" Scotty: "Working on it... There!"
Now what we need is the relevant information. Fuel usage, energy usage, full load and empty, on straight roads and hilly terain, nice weather, bad weather, severe & snowstorm, etc...in a short video with data written down

Pins can be a bear at times. I lost a few nerves sorting them out in the past, after placing them incorrectly myself. Congratulations on sorting out the bugs.
I love seeing flatbeds with toys strapped on, its always hilarious.
CONGRATS! .... GOOD JOB EVERYONE!!!
I love that Topsy is loved by other truckers)))
This is fantastic. When I started following your channel I wasn't sure what to expect. What an accomplishment!!!
Dedication and transparency. Perfect. Getting excited for the pick up conversion.
Hell yes. When you have an 82" sleeper tandem drive truck available for purchase I'm tempted to buy 1 for use here in the USA. I not only enjoy the body design, i love how connected and informative you are with the general public in how your trucks work and any update/progress you have with the trucks and company as a whole.
Congratulations to this history-writing team!

While it may not be new Technology, it’s a new use for Diesel Electric Technology that could revolutionize Cargo Transport, not only for logging. Congratulations, You guys kick so much ass, loving this journey🎉💪
As a former trucker that’s now a mechanic. I fucking approve of this message. Super proud that your showing the world that 🇨🇦 isn’t only igloos and beaver tails. 😂
I LOVE wiring. The 2020 T680 I drive kept throwing a fault code for one of four speed sensors on the drive axles, which lit up the ABS/traction control/ stability control warning lights at the same time, causing issues with assorted things like high idle control, pto override of idle shutdown, and even gear shifting. Our techs fought with it for months, but finally fixed it by simply connecting new ABS sensor harnesses between the computer in the cab, and the drive axles. KENWORTH used twisted pair wires instead of that generic ABS sensor coax like you see on trailers. Can’t just leave well enough alone.
This is so big!! wow, proved so many people wrong with this one. I cant wait to see what yall have in store for the future! Congrats from Central Oregon!!!
I love what you guys are doing I’m super excited to watch you guys grow this is a great idea I’m definitely gonna try to get one of your 1ton truck kits
I'm not a trucker and don't really even deal with them, but i am so excited for this! It's the little stupid mistakes like that that end up making your production checklists so you don't repeat them in the future! I was going to say to let me know when y'all need an operations director, but I don't think I'd survive Canada after a lifetime in Texas weather. 😂
AWESOME! Congratulations on every achievement 🤘
You should ship Topsy to Australia and stick it on a road train 😜😜
Congratulations on the vin, and thank you for all your hard work:)
all that for a pushed out pin oh man. I have been in that exact situation myself, on a transmission valvebody pass through connector. Other mechanic had pushed the pin out of the connector accidentally. Good work
Looking forward to you guys beginning road tests. I imagine there's lots of work to be done with building and optimising the generator power profiles.
love to see the progress!
Awesome!
This truck is awesome definitely makes me wanna get creative with a chassis cab truck as a starter
Excellent work and news way to go on your work and the future has just begun

Freaking awesome guys!
I've been there before with the electrical gremlins. I diagnosed a customer's tractor for 2.5 hours before I noticed that a connector that appeared attached was slightly disconnected on one side, causing 2 wires to not connect properly.
