With the rise in popularity of electric vehicles, it's safe to say that 2021 is the year of the EV. But with so many manufacturers jumping into the EV game, it's getting harder to know which EV is the best choice for your lifestyle. In this video, Carlos Lago from Edmunds runs down a trio of top-rated electric SUVs: the Tesla Model Y, the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Volkswagen ID.4. Carlos runs down the pros and cons of each EV SUV, comparing their cabins, details and driving manners in this electric SUV comparison test.
We named the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E the Edmunds Top Rated Luxury SUV for a reason. With an engaging driving experience, functional interior and over-the-air software updates, the Mach-E drives and looks like a car of the future. The Mach-E gets between 211 and 305 miles of range, depending on configuration, and its steering and handling are some of the best in its class. Inside, the large vertical touchscreen looks good and responds great, and its menus are easy to use.
Positioned as a small SUV, the VW ID.4 features impressive real-world range. The ID.4 has an official range of 250 miles, but our tests have regularly exceeded that range number. Inside the ID.4, the cabin is spacious and easy to see out of when driving. The technology features, including wireless smartphone integration, are solid for the segment, but the touchscreen feels a little small and not as responsive as the ones in the Mach-E and Model Y.
The Tesla Model Y is easily the most recognizable EV in this comparison. The Model Y is stylish on the outside and offers cutting-edge technology inside. Quick acceleration and excellent steering and handling are the highlights of the Model Y's driving experience. The EPA-rated range is likewise impressive, but it was much more difficult to reach during normal driving in our testing. The Model Y interior features a simple layout that's light on buttons or switches. A large touchscreen controls just about everything in the Model Y, and the over-the-air updates that can add features and system optimizations are one of the greatest innovations from Tesla.
All three of these electric SUVs offer their own set of features that are sure to please shoppers. The Mustang Mach-E has a great look, a functional interior and a fun driving experience. The VW ID.4 offers great value for the price. The Tesla Model Y is the popular choice with all the technology features and sports car-like acceleration. We have our favorite, but the choice is yours.     Of these 3 I would choose the ID.4.... But after careful consideration and testing various EV'S I bought and ID.3 as it's smaller size is much more practical than those in your video for the tight streets and parking spaces in my city.

    Tesla for the Supercharger network if nothing else, otherwise the Mach-E. The VW ID 3/4 have been big letdowns, but maybe the Ioniq 5 or Toyobaru BZ will live up to expectations.

    So much misinformation. The 'start' button in the ID.4 is to power-on the car if the driver isn't in the driver seat (e.g. the passenger is waiting in the car and wants heat or a/c), (edit: or if the remote is dead and you use the mechanical key to unlock the door, or to forcibly power it off). For regen braking, the electric motor does NOT "turn backwards".... it simply begins to function as a generator to turn the kinetic energy of the car into electricity while continuing to turn the same direction. The ID.4 *does* have a power tailgate in higher trim levels. The Mach-e frunk divider pops out pretty easily if you don't want it installed. Please research better before going on the internet and just saying random words.

Every car I have ever driven with a start button requires a foot on the brake to start it. It is a standard safety feature.

    @@flipadavis If the key is in the vehicle, you can power the vehicle up to operate accessories by pressing the Start/Stop button, but you can't *drive* it unless you depress the brake before selecting D or R. This is like an accessory mode. Also, if the remote battery is dead and you open the door with the mechanical key (yes, it exists), you have to use the Start/Stop button to power up the car. And also... the button exists to have a way to forcibly power-off the vehicle if necessary. Doesn't matter what you think, this is all from the owner's manual and personal experience.

    So i recently bought a Y. The center screen is something that you get used to after 4 days… and that’s basically it. No drama after that. For the likes of Carlos - I understand his view, as he is in and out of new cars all the time - and has to totally reconfigure his driving to it. All i am saying is - with respect to the Tesla - the cutting edge features aren’t as inconvenient as they appear in this review - but certainly an adjustment.

    I am a hardcore ICE guy and actually hated EVs, I do admit that I love the Model 3 , but when I drove the Mach E. It felt really good, true infotainment is something getting used 2 in Tesla but what I felt about the Mach E is, it felt easiest to live with, easiest to adapt to and felt like no need for orientation lik I had 2 when I tried Tesla. That is a very good thing Also do remember this is Fords 1st BEV. for a 1st the Mach e felt far superior to 1st gen Teslas plagued with paint issues, built quality issues, software issues etc

    @@ponygt6629 To combat you in this field, paint and quality will be worse than ford no brainer it’s a brand new startup vs 100 years worth of experience . Ford also has all the capital in the world to fund the mach-e. They made it an electric version of their ice platforms so I can see correlation in ease of switching over. Honestly non of these cars really have a learning curve to driving , 1 week with any of these to a brand new ev owner will be down pact they will know the ins and outs. What’s best overall for the next 5 years of ownership is the difference . Mach-e and Tesla great offerings , ford killed it. Sadly from a scientific basis, ford is less efficient . Nothing really separates the two other than technology and interior quality

    @@christopherviteri3603 Yes , U r right, but that does not mean the Tesla is bad, its supercharger network is far superior to Fords and US Gov chargers, that is a BIG+ when it comes to range anxiety etc So I do agree ford still has more catch up to do to be a real competitor for Tesla. And Ford has a 174 Bn Debt, so its not like they ve all the investment, they ve to b very careful and as of now they are doing good, ONLY IN USA and is neglecting other parts of the world

    Well NO. Just as he mentioned, not everyone wud buy a BEV, for eg, in california there are like 50k people who use a car for 100-150 mile round trips each day, for them a 200-250 mile range car is more than enough for 95% of their life duties . Studies have shown that majority of US people dont drive more than 60 miles before they take a 1 hour break. So in most probability a car iwth real life range between 150-200 mile is more than enough for 85% of population, that is exactly why the F150 lightning too is out there with 150-200 mile real life range. Sure Teslas system is superior, but Fords current range to availability of reliable charging stations s not that bad. i do agree Tesla has better charging and better range, but that does not mean it should always b preferred, for eg: there are 4 cy ice cars that get 15-20 mpg as well as some that gets 25-35 mpg out of same displacement. This does not mean the 15-20 mpg average car is stupid. many people wud prefer it if it is better to live, drive,stream line on to etc

    “Physical controls are good”… The Y has a physical volume wheel on the steering wheel. No need to reach over and turn the giant dial in the center of the touch screen of the Ford. I found it odd that this guy says the Ford is his choice when in each individual category he also said the Y was superior (space, range, touch screen, features, charging). The only thing he liked more with the Ford was the huge volume dial. 🤷‍♂️

    Haha totally agree😄 Some motor journalist confuse IQ and EQ winner. The Model Y objectively is the IQ winner since it wins in most measurable categories, whereas the Mach-E in this case might be the EQ win as it emotionally is more appealing to him.

    Owner of late 2018 Model 3 test drove the Mach E last week and disappointed. Feel less solid, driver seat and control also feel less premium compare to our Tesla. The M-E lane centering doesn't work on the curve it cut to other lane where basic autopilot works in the same curve. I don't get where Ford get all the praises I thought it would be great perhaps I got a bad sample? Also drove XC40 recharge and that thing is drive GREAT with awesome design and great Google OS. Only wish more range with lower price.

The guy said all screens can crash, he didn't say often, but that it happens or can happen, and unlike other cars that offer secondary guages and displays, it can be a problem with Tesla models 3 & Y that tie in everything to the one screen. X and S at least offers display

    With the Mach-e the whole vehicle crashes. Honestly, they have a lot software problems with Audio, Nav, screens, charging etc. The Tesla is better in almost every regard. If you want a vehicle you can trust on a long trip, the Tesla is it.

    @@1flash3571 Yeah, but it's still an issue, and not all drivers would know how to reset the screen or might even get annoyed by it. Like he said, Tesla is for people wanting to be on the cutting edge of tech, and some might not understand that being on the cutting edge of tech is a lot of beta testing and troubleshooting 😂

    I just bought the ID.4 Pro S. The review is based on the lower end model of the ID.4. The first edition and the Pro S have different features and one of them is the screen and response time are really good. The screen is bigger and my experience has been very satisfying.

    The improved responsiveness of the screen is due to a software update that came out after this review was posted. All ID.4 models should have better screen performance after the update.

    Pretty fair review I think. I’m a Model Y owner for a year. No problems at all. Screen never gone black. Having all controls, including speedometer, on screen is a non-problem. My volume control is by my left thumb; no reaching for screen or volume knob. 😅 If road tripping, Tesla superchargers are a huge advantage as is FSD.

    My understanding is that a lot of the unique selling points with a Tesla is the software. Like “dog mode”, “centry mode”, “camp mode”, “Autopilot”, “karaoke”, “Netflix”, etc etc. A lot of the stuff that Edmunds left out because it’s just “too much”… yeah but…🙈

    I just purchased a first edition id4 today. I like its great build quality, styling, overall design, practicality and better price. For me, its power is more than enough since I am not a racer. The often complained info system and control seems fancy and techy to me after a quick learning curve. The frunk is nothing for daily driving which this car is intended for, and definitely worth to be sacrified by mechanical maintenance tasks (styling must yield to function). As a former engineer, I found the car's design and logic highly aligns to mine.

    @@MarkXHolland no. I believe Tesla should be very good, but id 4 beat Tesla in price after tax credits easily. The point here is not to pick the best at any price, it is to pick the best one you will spend.

    Yep because the ID4 is made according to VWs philosophy, the people’s car. The Model Y is definitely far too expensive and lacks in many areas luxuries unlike the ID4 like ambient lighting and massage seats. The ID4 is one of the best value ev’s today. And in 3 years of free charging and tax credits and it’s such a good value. I wouldn’t even recommend the Model Y because it’s not that great of a vehicle now with the competition coming in

    Is the model y 2021 or 2020 ? There is a battery different 77Kwh (2020) vs 82kwh (2021) I would validate all this

    7:40 The dividers in the Mustang frunk are only there so Ford isn't required to include an emergency release button.

    They actually do have an emergency release button but according to Ford, it won’t be activated for use until they release a software update at a later date. It’s in the inside left of the trunk that couldn’t be seen from the camera angle. After the button is activated by that software update, Ford will no longer put the dividers in there at the factory.

    @@johngreene4436 I’m not sure what mistake you’re referring to but you can clearly see the emergency release button on the frunk casing he has removed from the Mach E. I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make exactly. The Mach E does have an emergency release button but it’s not active at the moment. So if you press it, it doesn’t do anything and it won’t until the software update by Ford at a later date. When this happens, they won’t include the dividers anymore at the factory because they will no longer be required to since they have a functioning emergency release button. You will be able to purchase the dividers for later install, however.

    @@JakubKudlacz the only reason I replied was because in his original comment, he suggested that the divider was there so Ford didn’t have to include an emergency release button but they do have the buttons. When he linked the video of Sandy, it seemed like he was still trying to suggest they don’t have an emergency release button and that’s why I didn’t understand what point he was making by linking the video. Nothing I said was incorrect but maybe I misinterpreted something he said.

Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Edmonds, Alex on Autos, Kelly Blue book, and many more say it and it would not have won all of those awards from all over the place. Utility Vehicle Of The Year, Luxury EV Of The Year, EV Of The Year and has been enter into the Guinness Book of World Records for its range and efficiency. Where's Tesla?

    1. I don't find having to open the hood/bonnet regularly an attractive proposition. 2. The combined boot/frunk capacity of the Mach-E is still way less than the ID.4's boot. Conclusion? I don't want or need a frunk!

    It is a superficial review. Nothing on what is under the hood. The quality of the thermal/cooling system, electric motors, the structure. It is really important and I recommand you to watch the Sandy Munro (Munro Live) on KZread about the Mach-E thermal nightmare. There is so much hoses under the hood, it is made to have problems. The structure now, Tesla is using mega casting to reduce the amount of welding and have a perfect one.

    @@llaughridge Sure he is. And hacks always tear a car down to show you the Medusa of wiring below that plastic cover. The Ford is a great start, except it shows how stuck in the ICE age they're development team still is by adding nonsensical features like exhaust noise. And WTF with those bicycle tires, a display dial and really bizarre door handles or lack thereof???

    I follow Sandy Munro; by and large he and is team are impressed by the Mach e. If you like the Mach e, I wouldn’t hesitate. Sandy had a problem with the Mach e thermo cooling because he is all about one item should do the job of two. I would argue, as a shade tree mechanic, that having isolated sub systems can help identify a problem. Again, though his complaint is on the side of manufacturing costs and complexity, not how functional or reliable it is. He has also found many things he likes better on the Mach e (from a manufacturing analysis).

    Note the recent story of a $17,000 repair bill from Tesla for a crack in the battery assembly, the result of the kind of design/manufacturing thinking Sandy Monroe promotes. Someone did an engineering hack and fixed it for $700. I'll take a more maintainable sack of smaller assemblies anyday!

    Really? When in the history of car reviews has anyone ever talked about the cooling systems, unibody structure, etc. The majority of owners will not be impacted by any of those things at all.

    Here's the real world reason I went with a Model Y. After testing out both cars the POS ford dealers tried to screw me like they do everyone else. They went straight to the low monthly payments after glossing over the rest of the pricing. It was a low monthly payment because it was a 7 year loan. There was a $9,000 market adjustment due to scarcity and an 8% interest rate despite my 751 credit score. There was another $6000 in accessories on top of that which couldn't be removed. They actually wanted more money than the cost of the Model Y for a car that is nowhere near as nice. During negotiation, they dropped in interest down with manager's approval but wouldn't budget on the bullshit over MSRP mark up. Just off that I got the Model Y with 2.49%.

    @A M They didn't say they wanted something that stands out. They said they want an EV that feels like it is designed as an EV and tech that is integrated for the future (different), not a legacy gas car format that happens to be an EV with added tech that emulates old analogue legacy button and knobs just because that is familiar not because it is necessarily better. People will argue it is better like always found in reviews like this but I can tell you from experience that I much prefer culling out all the extraneous crap across my console and dash and consolidating it into something more simple. Tesla does a great job of prioritizing what is the most used and important controls and keeping them in physical form like on the steering wheel. Those scroll buttons are for volume, cruise control speed and also have 4 direction of push and a push in for various purposes. It has incredible voice control for other features or redundant features. They also had the foresight to eliminate some vestigial legacy crap that isn't even needed like a start button for the car. The start button is your butt in the seat and the brake pedal. Genius. It works great. It turns off when your butt is out of the seat and you close the door when your leave. One less button on the dash. Also the sentry mode with surround cameras is great. I got rear ended at low speed on an off ramp and it has made the claim go so much smoother that I have rear video of the guy ramming me. The list goes on.

    Ford’s blue cruise isn’t a “similar technology” to Tesla’s FSD. Blue cruise should be compared to basic Tesla Autopilot. Neither is Ford saying that blue cruise will have full self driving capability in the future. Edmunds should know the difference, but it’s not like I expected them to.

One miss: No comments about the relative availability of repairs and warranty service between the two main brands and the Tesla. It's one of my concerns as a future BEV buyer. Hearing about that would have been helpful.

    In Norway they tested the similar Tesla model 3, Mustang Mach E and ID4 and they actually got results that Tesla model 3 had more range when running the car in real work test and until the battery is deflated 😄. You guys should check it out may be you guys can learn a thing of two 👍.

    Yes it does but as an electric car to migrate from ICE, I felt the Mach E is incredibly good. Also do remember this Mach E is Fords 1st BEV, and for a 1st this actually is far superior to teslas 1st gen Model 3s

    @@ponygt6629 It's not Ford's first BEV, Focus Electric is Ford's first BEV and you comparing a 1st gen model 3 which I assume the 2018 to a 2021 Ford Mach E. My 2018 LRR drive model have better effieciency and range with a smaller battery in comparison with Mach E extended range rear wheel drive 😁.     Wait, wait! I’m very confused about the statement that the manufacturers only recommended used charging to 80-90 % on a daily basis. Everything else I heard or read says the battery management software handles charging to maximize battery life. Did something suddenly change or did I misunderstand previous information?

    Most EVs allow you to easily set the maximum charge level. Set it 80% for maximum battery life. Use 100% when you are going on a longer drive, at potentially a minor decrease in battery life. Think of it choosing not to redline a cold engine. It's not going to destroy it, but it's not the best thing to do if you expect the drivetrain to last for 500K miles.

    While FSD isn't available on the Tesla I wish that they compared their autopilot/lane keep assist features. Most of the people will be happy with that and from what I've seen Tesla has the best and easiest to use.

    Agreed. Lane keeping and radar cruise are incredibly useful today, unlike the vaporware fsd stuff. And not all of it works that well, or has key weaknesses that make it frustrating to use. Wish reviewers really examined these features more. Instead they go on about whether the blinkers and taillights are led or not who cares.

    This is always an area that is neglected on reviews. For me it’s the most important feature of my Tesla. It makes my long daily freeway drive a breeze. I would love to hear about other brands version of lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control. The second thing is software updates. I know for a fact my Tesla has gotten better over time and continues to, which feels good when you spend big bucks on a car. And it makes it so you aren’t envious when the next model has that upgraded feature.

    What if your housing doesn’t allow a home plug in and you have to rely on supercharger stations, then is Tesla the only way to go or can other electric cars use those stations owned by Tesla?

    There's an adapter you can buy to allow you to use Tesla charging stations on non-tesla vehicles. But, you cannot use the Tesla "Supercharger" stations on non-teslas. At least not yet. Elon Musk claims they will be open to all EVs later in the year, though.

    I wish I had seen this video 8 months ago. I own the ID.4 First Edition, and do love it. There is in fact a good reason for the Start button. When the driver leaves the car the car shuts down, so if a passenger stays and it is cold or hot, they are left sweltering, or shivering. Hitting the start button turns the systems on again allowing passengers to have the comforts afforded by the vehicle. I have not yet found a way to disable the feature.

    @16:16 Impressed there is a volume knob on Mach-e. Model Y has a volume knob on the steering wheel so you don't have to take your hand off the wheel to change volume.

    The Mach-e also has the volume on the steering wheel. Knobs in the center for various controls are easier to access rather than menus, especially for things like (work) gloves, people with bad hands, longer fingernails, etc., etc. Or passenger access (someone not familiar with hunting through different brand menus).

    A multi-function scroll wheel isn't a volume knob. A scroll wheel on the steering wheel can't be accessed by the front passenger. Ford's volume knob can.

    @@flipadavis I don’t think most people are saying it’s a deal breaker. It’s just that some prefer a knob. In the past, Ford made some cars without a knob. But their customers preferred at least having a volume knob. No. It’s not a necessity. It’s just what some prefer. But I doubt they’ll reject or choose a car for that reason only.

    As another KZread reviewer commented on the window opening buttons I initially agreed, then on reflection noted my partner in his Tesla and me in my Audi A7 were opening the rear windows by mistake because we do it by feel. I think the ID4 system would ensure the correct windows are operated, especially as the driver normally only needs to open the front windows.

    That makes a lot of sense. I do that all the time as well. I like the rear switch button on the ID.4 &.3 also if you hold the rear button down for a couple of seconds the light blinks and all the windows go down at the same time. GENIUS! 😃😂 Press guys just knit pic over everything sometimes. 😉

It should not be that hard to come up with some kind of comparison. Besides NHFTA , the IIHS, and anecdotal history should be able to come to some conclusion.

    @@beau6113 That's blatantly false... You are using data that shows the Tesla Model 3 and S are some of the safest vehicles in it's class and extrapolating that much farther than is defensible. Tesla vehicles result in about 1 death per 220 million miles and all motor vehicles result in about 1 death per 90 million miles. This means a tesla is 2x as safe as your average vehicle, but already I think you should question your claim from those statistics. Many Subarus, for example, have lower deaths per million miles than Teslas, but I would propose that's more likely due to the driving characteristics of your average Subaru driver than vehicle safety. School buses... result in 1 death per 500 million miles and that is considering the fact that most occur when passengers are not wearing seatbelts and in older, smaller models. A touring bus should be even safer. I would assume a tracked vehicle weighing about 50 tons would result in as close to 0 deaths per mile as statistically possible (and yes, there are a few). The biggest problem with your statement is that it doesn't mention how important 'in it's class' is as a qualifier. In defense of your statement, you could easily claim that the Model 3 is the safest vehicles for occupants in a crash, in it's class, as it gets top safety scores from test ratings and there wouldn't be much to disprove it. In fact, most EVs tend to get 5 stars across automakers (in part because Teslas score so well - they have to, in part because the architecture leads to safer designs, especially in frontal impact). However, Tesla claimed the lowest 'probability of injury' from the crashes... but they did so themselves. The NHTSA and federal officials have all asked Tesla to stop making that claim as it isn't something they devise/support nor do they have any evidence in support of it. Of course, what's really needed is more crash testing, both independent of the individual vehicle (run head-on with a typical SUV for instance) and above the current 5-star ratings (which more and more cars achieve).

    A better way to think of regenerative breaking is to say the motor becomes a generator, taking energy from the vehicle's motion to recharge the battery and slow down the vehicle. The motor does not spin the other direction. Power does flow the other direction, however. Perhaps that is what you are thinking.

    After three months I love my Mach E. It's the extended range four wheel drive - so quick! More fun to drive than you'd ever expect from a four door crossover. But I agree it isn't a road trip car with the existing charging network. I'd have bought a Telsa if I were taking long trips, or if it were my family's only car. And I wouldn't have bought an EV at all without my own garage charger or one at work (I'm fortunate to have both).

    At first the Mach E was one of my choice when I will change my actual car but I was able to see it need very big improvement for the cooling of the batterie. I saw Munro dismantle all the thing and it was eye-openning.

    @@andreb.8266 Andre, in a series of videos Sandy Munro has both good and bad things to say about the Mach E engineering. I don't think his beef with the thermal management was whether it works so much as whether the approach was cost effective and weight efficient. For the cabin AC, the Mach E is great in my experience, and better than the Model X I was in last week. In a subsequent video Munro was not as critical of the Mach E battery pack and cooling plate design.

    @@mowcowbell If you make a reservation for an ID4 from VW, then you get MSRP. VW has been slapping down dealers trying to add markup. But if someone cancels a reservation, the dealer is free to mark it up however they like.

    Because in their tests, like the fuel mileage test, the real numbers don't quite hit the paper advertised ones by Tesla. And some research shows a reason for this. Tesla doesn't use a 30% adjustment factor like other OEMs when submitting their range to the EPA. Tesla also claims they range is measured when driving beyond 0% indicated range (although in the owners manual they make it clear it will void warranty for any damage it may cause on the high voltage system).

    @@odisy64 No they haven't. Third party publications all struggle to hit Tesla EPA numbers. That's a fact. Motortrend just got a chance to test the Model S Plaid. With nearly perfect conditions of 75F. Still only got 318 miles vs EPA 348 miles. Edmunds can't hit Tesla figures. The Fast Lane Car couldn't. Literally nobody can without some absurd hypermiling. On the other hand most publications can hit and in some cases easily exceed EPA figures for other EVs in the very same conditions, because those OEMs report with a standard 30% adjustment factor.

    The cargo floor in the VW is adjustable so you can raise it up so it lines up with the seats and you therefore have a completely flat load floor.

The car was not designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle. And I have written in teslas and they are fast and nice.     Cheaper energy cost for EVs. You pay up front, but less on service at least for Tesla vehicles, not sure about other 2 though, and you pay less for each mile. Not sure about the insurance though. You have to do the math.

    You should look at total costs (per month) when comparing to ICE cars. So also calculate how much you spend on fuel and how much you would spend on electricity for charging and maintenance costs differences.

    Cheaper is relative to the individual. My EV cost a lot more to insure and register than my ICE. Partly because it cost about 50% more and partly because the state charges extra fees on EVs. It makes up for it in gas, but its fairly close in TCO overall to a similar sized ICE (Rav4).

    It is a testament that Edmunds editors don’t get it at all. I have standard range Model Y and I commute 136 miles a day. The best part is not going to a gas station at all. When I had my corolla, I had to stop for gas every other day.

    Obviously, as if you drive a lot you save a ton on gas as well since you can charge an EV for $1 or $1.50/gallon equivalent most places. Or get $6,000 worth of solar panels (for ave. 12,000 miles/yr driver) and drive for free for 25 or 30 years. Beats paying $50,000 for gas over that time!

    Separate from the EV features, my wife and I have been doing a very nonscientific study of body rust on cars. I VERY high percentage of vehicles with the worst rust issues, many in vehicles that appear to only be a few years old, are American made; specifically, Chevy, Ford and Dodge. Will this Ford Mustang Mach E be in that group? I'd like to add it to my radar for my first EV in the next couple years, but that rust issue looms large for me.

    A correction about paying for more range. With an electric car, the cost of charging is dependent on the size of the battery not total range. The Model Y and Mach E has a 75 kwh battery vs the ID4’s 82 kwh. So you actually pay a bit more to go less miles in the VW.

    I wouldn’t consider it cheap but a better financial move. Think about it. Ev’s are moving so fast right now in terms of advancement why spend so much on a top level one? The ID4 also gives you a 7500k tax credit and 3 years of free charging and many other perks like massage seats, ambient lighting, etc

    Discusses full self driving not actually being available (it absolutely is but doesn't have full features and capability yet) but doesn't review and compare the actual driver assist features of each car. Teslas come with Autopilot (not Full Self Driving) included in the price and is a very capable combo adaptive cruise control/lane keep assist product. Does the ID.4 and Mach-e come with these? And are they as good? I'm not familiar with those two brands and this review skipped it entirely.

    A really interesting back-to-back comparison, Carlos - thank you. Whilst we don't yet get the Model Y in the UK, it's always been the EV that other (UK) reviewers have referred to as being the 'benchmark' vehicle in this sector... So, I found it hugely interesting, therefore, to find your 'take' as being the Mach-E... I shall watch future UK reviews of such EVs with a little more open-mindedness from now on...!     Tesla wins. But it's also far more expensive. I can afford the Mach e and I can't the Tesla y. In Canada with all the features I want from both. The Mach e costs me 60k while the Y costs me 100.

    Great review! I owned a Model Y (sold it after 5 months), and have driven the Mach E. I really liked it much better than the Y. Acceleration isn’t as quick, but it’s not slow by any means. Great advice on buying future tech now…I bought my Model 3 with FSD, owned it for 2 years, and it never came to fruition. After owning 25 cars in my life, that was by far the dumbest thing I’ve ever purchased on a car. When I bought my Y a hear later, got the LRAWD with NO FSD. Didn’t miss it at all. I got lucky when I bought FSD that it was only 5k and when I sold it, FSD was 10k, so didn’t lose out, but I would have made much more $$$ investing the 5k.

    I’ve had my Model Y for more than a year now and I love except for a few important safety features: 1) no blind side indicator in the mirrors, and 2) no rear cross traffic alert. How can a vehicle so advanced miss these basic safety functions?

    Yeah I second those two complaints. Hopefully blind side monitoring can be updated with a software update, Tesla shows red car on the screen, but I am usually watching the road or side mirror not the screen.

    I'm not sure I understand the rear cross traffic alert complaint. If your bumper is sticking out even 1 inch past the two cars parked next to you the giant rear camera fish eye view on your giant screen shows you traffic in either direction all the way down the street. That is better than some beeping noise telling you if there is traffic or not. I can see with my eyes all the way down in either direction if there is a physical car or not.

    Air conditioning is a relatively efficient form of climate control, as it works by transporting heat in a closed cycle rather than outright eliminating it in an open cycle. The amount of energy an air conditioning unit can move is more than the energy it takes to run the AC system, as you're just moving heat out of the cabin and putting it outside-- the energy is transported, not transduced. It's why a heat pump is the preferred means to provide cabin heat in an EV during winter rather than using resistive heating elements-- a heat pump collects the heat already present in the outside air and concentrates it inside of the car.

    When using the adaptive cruise control, you don't need to use the pedals at all. 0-pedal driving. I just don't get this fixation that some people have with this.

    I drive to visit family for the holidays. I can’t sit and wait at lots of slow chargers or wonder if electrify America stations will be down when I arrive or being taken up by slower charging chats ahead of me so Tesla it is since they can use Supercharger network and Electrify America in a pinch.

    Let me tell you a story. Two road trips with my model 3. One entire station on Florida’s Turnpike with 16 stalls completely out of service. Right next to it a row of FPL and Another of Electrify America all in perfect working condition. Second story. Charged vehicle at least 10 times on the two road trips. Never saw a Tesla Supercharger go above 50Kwh. Very slow charging. I have used Electrify America 5 times (which is Free for my ID4) always charge at or above 125Kwh. ID4 20-80% in 25 minutes. So yes Tesla has an upper hand with infrastructure but it is far from being even close to excellent.

    @@FernandoRodriguez-pj5uh Um… Tesla’s screen tells you when superchargers are not working, even tells you if they are in-use. There are more than 25,000 superchargers (May 2021) vs 9,500 electrify American (by 2025). I hope EA and others create great charging networks… but today, nothing is close to Tesla’s overall. Not perfect, but it is great and is WAY better than when I first used it 6 years ago.

    @@KenPaulsen13 25.000 globally 16K in the US. To you and me the 25.000 globally are worthless. The only ones that count are the ones where my vehicle can go. So the ones in Europe or Mexico really don’t count. And yes the screen is “supposed” to tell you that. Well guess what. We arrive only to get waved by a couple in a Model Y fuming because all the chargers were off line and the screen didn’t show them as off line. While leaving two more vehicles showed up right after us asking the same thing.

    Good review, but they didn't cover towing. Part of what sold me on the Y was it's available towing package. Also while the Y really impressed me with its cargo volume, the actual weight limits of the car concern me, I might not be able to load up heavier items, even though they fit into the car no problem. I'd be curious about the VW and Ford in these regards.

    I dont get the fascination with the Mach-e physical volume controller on the center screen... You literally have a physical volume scroller on the steering wheel on the Model Y, which is exactly where you would want to have it :P If anything, that controller on the Mach-e screen should have been a climate controller and not volume. Now you only have an ugly scroll wheel in the middle of the screen.

Haha I’ve had several Porsche’s new off the showroom floor, and it’s a VW, and part of build quality is reliability, not just panel gaps. Just my XMSN on my 2014 cayenne diesel cost more to fix ($8800 at 118k miles) than I’ve spent on everything on my 2017 Model X with 130K miles...($5798 - which includes my $1500 main screen update which I wanted, not needed) That maintenance price didn’t include, ECU (warranty), DEF pump going ($1695), XMSN flush ($1795), brakes ($795 - and I did my own brakes / rotors)....The ECU, XMSN and DEF pump left me stranded. A big panel gap has never left me stranded waiting for a tow.

    Owner of late 2018 Model 3 test drove the Mach E last week and disappointed. Feel less solid, driver seat and control also feel less premium compare to our Tesla. The M-E lane centering doesn't work on the curve it cut to other lane where tesla base autopilot works on the same curve. I don't get where Ford get all the praises I thought it would be great perhaps I got a bad sample? Also drove XC40 recharge and that thing is drive GREAT with awesome design and great Google OS. Only wish more range with slightly lower price.

    Mach-E is a good first attempt from Ford but it's nowhere near the level of Tesla. I researched all sorts of EVs and bought a Model Y. I hope other car companies close the gap with Tesla and make competition progress the thing that benefits us all.

    The Model Y is hands down more performance oriented over the other two. I'm not to old to enjoy some performance so the Model Y would be my choice. I've seen some vids with the Model Y performance keeping up with a BMW M3 at the track so that would blow away the other competition hands down. No vehicle is perfect but once you get used to the huge screen and controls on the Model Y it just becomes second nature. I would like to see when the Mach-e GT comes out and how it compares since the long range AWD Mach-e falls short of the LR Model Y..

    See the Out of Specs review on the Mach E. Also, the Out of Specs reviewer, a Tesla owner, has issues with the Model Y's suspension. He drives them on real canyon roads, not just on tracks. The Model Y needs further development and refinement to reach its potential. The Mach E was too soft, but that's been fixed with the GT version.

Details can be found on google. Here are some highlights from the conclusion they brought up at the end of the video. 1. Both car's AVG speed were about 100KM/h (Highway drive) 2. Both car's A/C and other convenience functions(like Highway drive assistance for Ionic 5, Auto Pilot for Model Y and etc.) were always on during the test. 3. 4 drivers drove about 100km per person and checked the remaining battery at designated location. 4. Both car have shown slightly poor battery performance than usual because of the weather condition (rain) 5. By just looking at the specification, Model Y can drive 141km more than Ionic 5. However the actual drive test have shown that the difference were only about 60~70km. This experiment have shown that IONIC 5's driving range is little longer than what Hyundai advertised. 6. They have concluded that both Ionic 5 and Model Y can drive from Seoul to Busan. The distance between those two cities are about 350km. Hope this helps.

    Regen braking / one pedal 18:00 your statment "motor spins backwards..." i dont think so. Check your facts. Start with inductive charging, back emf, or maybe just "how does an ev work" in google searches. Very misleading and wrong. The motors and your car keep moving in the same direction.     Hard to beat VW ID4 as a daily commute car with occasional long road trips for vacation (use case for most people). Plus 3 years of free Electrify America DC fast charging...Lease for 3 years, wait for the solid state batteries to come and then buy an EV to own.

    In Canada, especially in QC where it is the only one that can get all the government rebates (13K$), there is so much a price delta between the ID.4 and the two others that it becomes by far the best deal for the money. Exception for sure, but it may explain why it will become a great success, if we finally can get them delivered!

    We went all ev (a model 3 in 2019 and a model Y this year). When we first got the model 3 I would find excuses to go to the grocery store so I could drive it. Still super happy with it. Friends are always amazed at how much stuff we’re able to pack into the model y on road trips. The frunk and sub trunk definitely add lots of usable storage space. Also the 3rd row seat in our Model Y comes in handy quite often.

    @@twany442 All his videos are comparing Fords engineering to teslas.Ford just really looks like they are trying to put square pegs into round holes. They are trying to make I’ll be EV with ice vehicle parts as much as possible. At least they’re trying and keeping their workers in Mexico employed but doing it very slowly as they know they are cannibalizing their own business.

    Overall good review but a few things were overplayed like the screen in the Tesla and the lack of buttons to lower seats in the other two cars. What was a disservice to listeners was the extremely basic coverage of long range driving. There was an attempt but it was in no way clear. The MachE is the worst car for long range driving to the point you almost can't do it. The ID.4 is slow at long range driving but will be doable. They did a pretty good job of covering that the Tesla is good for long range driving but not a good job of why. The MachE simply charges too slow and the car is too inefficient to drive long range. This is a serious limitation while every other complaint about the cars is pretty minor. Hard to see how they ended up with recommending the MachE. Ford will hopefully fix this along with the infotainment and then I would see it winning for sure.

    @@llaughridge Like I noted, the ID.4 can long range drive. It is mostly let down by a lack of charging stations and the issues with those stations. Lack of stations requires it to charge too high into the pack where the speed of it's, and any EV's, charging curve is slow. It also has a lower max charging rate so while it's curve is good, maxing out at 126kW makes Tesla better in both aspects even on common 150KW chargers must less 250kW charger. Again, not saying the ID.4 can't road trip and I did watch Out of Specs drive back from FL in an ID.4 which was great content. Of the two, it's the charging stations and not the 126kW max charge rate that causes the most problem.
