Confession: it took me a long time to warm up to Lana. Not long ago I was a bit of a snob about recent music and I would have agreed with the scolding British woman who said she didn't like the production values or voice. On paper it seemed like her music would be a perfect fit for what kind of music I loved most growing up (Mazzy Star, Red House Painters, Katell Keineg, Silver Jews, Beth Orton). Introspective, a bridge between the modern classic ↔ contemporary style, and boldly outside the typical. Truth is, I still hear her early work as a bit too affected, monotone, too self-conscious a pastiche of her favs, and don't love the production that deliberately sounded like it was recorded underwater, like she was signaling to hipsters how indie/underground she was. And I've listened to mostly low-fi stuff, so that wasn't a problem in principle. Anyway, no hate, she's still one of the only good artists to have gotten popular this Century. I wish her all the continued success possible.

I honestly think if they showed young and beautiful or shades of cool, they would be wowed

I love how receptive they are. You know. I watched a dozen of boomers and old people reading just the lyrics being impressed by the meaning behind them. And they're smart, cause they just perceived the Americana feeling and the 60s nostalgia behind them with few words. I also clearly felt the moment when they discovered the soft, nice, captivating and calm music behind them. Good video and good intelligent people.
