Actually if u noticed. Unlike a Swedish design the Elbit system is Perforated, in every section there is. Why? So no dust or degree can be caught in the mechanisms and cause even the slightest stutter. Even the tray that collects the shells makes a quick twist with them. Just to make sure. So rest assure .. that dust or degree are not a neglected issue . As for maintaining ? Every heavy machine needs constant maintenance . Even the simplest of guns will requires constant cleaning after all. Same as any constantly used machine that needs to always perform at its best.

It also doesn't offer a lot over the M777. You still have to carry ammo to it. You still have to load propellent. For some reason the primer is disturbingly more complicated. Height of the breech is ridiculous if you ever have to shoot degraded. About the only good thing is gunners won't get lazy with the ram rod.

@WithAStick AngryWhiteMan maintenance is very important, for example, the f35 can only fly 1 time every 5 days, so a bunch of su30s can destroy a f35 while its underdoing maintenance, luckily russia can't afford alot of su30s. the amount of time it takes to load that artillery is horrible, isis will be laughing at US if they sent this piece of junk in battle.

@@diggacha you make some good points.. but we can clearly see this is not the final version. I wonder the same thing myself about the propellant. But the propellant is light weight after all.. thus, not requiring fancy lifting. Also. They usually like to make Israeli weapons to fit variable ammunition’s and propellants in a single unit. That may also account for the way every part of that unit, seems to measure and re measure the shells as well. All and all. This entire unit seems more fitting to third world countries that need some cheap reliable units. I’m saying that cause I know the Israeli have operational units that can fire at least 3 shells in a row if not more.. Fast and accurate with variations on time of impact so you can create a wide killing zone where they all hit at the same time.

It's an interesting concept, but it still requires a crew to load propellant manually, presumably as a safety feature to prevent the gun from going berzerk if it suffers a technical malfunction or its gunnery systems are hijacked. The integrated Ammo Crane is exceptional, though. I'm sure gunners will appreciate the choice of loading using a mechanized arm over breaking their backs.

  • @_spooT

3 rounds in ten seconds, plus it takes more seconds to put another 3 rounds in the ammo rack. I understand that this would make it more easier and would make it require less crew, but it would come at a price regarding overall effectiveness. A standard crew on a standard 155 can load faster and can load constantly. In the battlefield every second counts and even just one second difference can save your life. I don't know the specifics of this thing, but looking at it, it looks like if one system breaks, it compromises the entire gun. A well trained crew could even fire more rounds than an autoloading system plus much more reliable I'm no expert, but. If you're willing to listen to ideas/advice, it's that, don't overthink and overcomplicate things, you'll only end up creating more problems and using a lot more of money and probably end up just scrapping it. Just keep things simple. Simple but effective

@Andris Falks Towed artillery is still needed for Mountain, Heliborne, and Airborne troops but the majority of artillery should be mechanized in a first-rate army. That being said, there are lots of poor armies out there that cannot afford SP platforms. However, I agree that this platform is the worst of both worlds. It is heavy (due to automation), and complex/expensive while still being towed. Most towed units tend toward simplicity to reduce weight and logistics costs.

  • @swaghauler8334

@Andris Falks I'm NOT mixing two things! This is the OPERATIONAL DOCTRINE for advancing using Marine Amphibious techniques AND for AIR ASSAULT operations. The guns WITH PRIME MOVERS accompanying (slung under a second helo) are dropped in advance of conventional ground forces because helicopters can move much faster than trucks can. The gun crews then assemble in the FOB and operate NORMALLY. I HAVE DONE THIS! It is SOP for the 10th Mountain as well as the 101st and 82nd. You seem to think that the helicopters that can lift an M777 CANNOT lift a 5-Ton. You are wrong in this assumption. I (and the 5-Ton I drove) have been airlifted by both a Chinook AND an Osprey. Hell, the 82nd airdrops howitzers and their 5-Ton prime movers as well as light tanks, APCs, HUMVEEs and a number of other large objects. In fact, The C-5 regularly transports M1 Abrams MBTs.

Round runner/rammer on an M777. Few problems here. 1: a good crew can maintain the same rate of fire no problem. And we can do it for longer, as we can ready rack ALL rounds in emergencies and fire them all continuously without having to use a crane. 2: check firing. If the fire mission was bad, and the weapon auto fires, then it would send one more or two more bad rounds on target. 3: too reliant on tech. Tech is nice, but how is that gonna fire effectively and quickly during degraded fires? 4: in the event charges must be cut differently for each fire (using old bag charges like that), that will waste time, plus there is no magazine that autoloads those charges. So even if they were using up to date charges, they wouldn't be able to load them quickly like manual cannoneers or the Archer weapons system can.

It seems to me that the older, un-automated system would be able to keep up a greater and maintained barrage as opposed to everything coming to a halt as the three round magazine is reloaded in the ATHOS. I'd be interested in hearing what an Artilleryman who has crewed both the M198 and M777 has to say.

A lot of people seem to be shitting on this system but it does have potential. Although it cannot fire as fast as a crew, what happens when the crew is doing this all day? They get slower and may make mistakes. Although machines do eventually fail, they will keep running at a more consistent rate for prolonged fire. You can also reduce the crew by a lot. Although It doesn't say the full crew size, a crew of 3 can come close to the volume of fire a 8 man crew can do. Although the system will be more expensive, this will reduce overall cost by reducing crew size. Machines are stronger then men. If we want to go up to something like 170, 205, 225mm or somewhere in that range, a human loader will be very impractical. Although we will still need to bring the ammo to the gun, the gun can handle the rest Another issue brought up is durability. Yeah, it does not look like a super durable system, but people are not very durable either. Anything that would stop this machine from working would stop a human from being able to work or even live. Although it is true that this thing is massive and cannot run or hide like people. Another thing to note is that artillery is not intended to be used on the front lines, so it will not be exposed to anything that you wouldn't expose an M777 or an M109. Last issue I want to address, is complexity and reliability. It is true, it is way more complex than a typical howitzer. And it may fail. But these are issues that will be ironed out in future versions. Many current technologies were clumsy, too expensive, or not beneficial enough when they first came out. The M16 had a lot of problems but troops today swear by it, computers used to be massive and expensive and now most people has on in their pockets, early auto-rifles were heavy, overly complex, fragile, and now are standard even with unconventional forces. Hell, early autoloaders used on T-34s and BMP-1s were overly complex and they are now standard on Russian tanks and used in a number of other tanks such as Leclerc and K2 Black Panther. Give it time, and many of these issues will be ironed out.

That would be a mistake, there is never enough airpower to go around, Canada made the same mistake and artillery almost dissapeared. Then we went to Afghanistan and realized that artillery does have its advantages. Air support is not always on call (especially when it is not based in the same country), airpower is impermanent. We bought howitzers. And we also bought some Leopard tanks, after our armored corps almost dissapeared. Seems tank also have advantages over light mobile forces. The Army also got out of EOD (pre-Afghanistan) because they felt they were mobile and IEDs would not affect them. Yup, you gessed it, they got back into EOD right quick also.

most of you who are saying this has too many moving parts or isnt as fast as Xyz really need to step back a few as this isnt new and its going to be the norm very soon. this sort of equipment is getting better every year in both efficiency and durability, also cheaper be that through less men needed to run it or the parts being less expensive to fabricate because the tooling becomes more common.

All manual systems are faster than automated towed systems. At least trained FDF (conscript!) artillery squads can fire one round in 7 seconds with the Tampella/Patria 155 mm gun-howitzers - which share the same very quick breech mechanism with the Soltam/Elbit and Denel cannons (due to cooperation between Tampella, Soltam and Denel in the past). Also, towed systems can avoid counter-battery fire with dispersed positions. If a battalion of 18 cannons is dispersed wide enough, the battalion/battery firing the counter fire can disable just one piece at a time. That requires only more advanced computing systems to achieve, it's not really that difficult.

Yeah, but to date there's just one way to produce a larger area EMP - nuclear explosion in ionosphere. The smaller flux generator EMP's produce just one millionth (0,001%) of the pulse energy compared to an ionospheric nuclear explosion.

Everyone keeps mentioning the moving parts of the machine. I'm sure they have considered that weakness. There's a lot of factors involved in choosing a weapons system. Unless your the engineer or have had experience with it, I wouldn't criticize it so harshly for its reliability. There's a lot of modern machinery that appear very complex but are still used. Take a look at a modern car engine.

Hell, we got off 3 rounds in 30 seconds on an OLD (and I mean OLD) M114 "hog" during our training transition from the M110 203mm/8" SP to the M198 155mm/6" in the early '90s (Bravo Battery 4-92 FA).
