Advanced Mortar System (AMOS) - Twin Barrel 120mm Mortar

Ғылым және технология

AMOS or Advanced Mortar System is a 120 mm automatic twin barreled, breech loaded mortar turret. AMOS has been fitted to a wide range of armoured vehicles, such as the Sisu Pasi, Patria AMV and Combat Vehicle 90. The Swedish Navy originally planned to fit AMOS to the CB90 assault craft, but found that it was too small to carry it. Instead, a project to develop the larger Combat Boat 2010 was launched specifically to carry AMOS.

    thx for the great review as usual...Great vehicle,It misses a .50 cal machine-gun system(installed,between the two cannons)will come handy if you run out of Mortar Ammo,because besides an open battle field,I can see this machine in "city" close-combat,to fight "sniper"nests,for example.

    I was in a training exercise once with these on the opposing forces side and it was a nightmare. Our side consisted of the Finnish armoured brigade and the other side from variour jaeger brigades and the one single thing I hated more than anything was the AMOS. It was frustrating as all hell to come under mortar fire, try to push forward fast to engage the mortar team only to realise the bastard was an AMOS and simply had fired and then ran away further to rain down judgement again. Truly a wonderful piece on machinery if it's on your side.

    I am trained in 60 and 82 mm mortar. Trained crews from the state of disassembled to targets aimed with under a minute. My crew’s personal record is 52 seconds. If you have a good spotter. The enemy gets a precise steel rain for 3-6 minutes depending on the distance and shooting parameters. After firing, the mortar was disassembled in 15-20 seconds and we were again moving towards the new firing position. It's all because of the artillery radars. Anything slower and you become a target

    What was left unsaid was WHY it is SO GOOD to have the shells land at the same time: When the first one hits, it takes just a few secs for the enemy to take cover. After 10 seconds, the enemy sustains 80% less casualties. This is why its not useful to keep firing after that. Also there is the danger of counterbattery fire. When all the shells hit within 2-3 seconds, the effect is greatest. After that, its time to scoot and not be there when the enemy shells hit your position.

    I like this idea a lot. I think it could really add a lot of firepower for troops being deployed. With the full armor it can provide support far closer than traditional motor systems. The one thing I noticed and would like to see addressed, is the ammo storage. I see no blast door,which makes me highly uncomfortable. I think it you put in a blast door similar to the Abrams and a blow out panel, this vehicle is ideal and far safer.

    I would submit regarding anti-armour capability, following the words of WoT's The Chieftain when he did a vid on the ISU-152, that if you're in an armoured Tank and hit by a 6in HE shell (for the ISU-152 - obs multiple 120mm HE rounds for this) that your crew will have an 'emotional incident'

    Yes, yes, I know. 3 Comments in a row. Had to say that the AMOS is one scary arsed piece of gear. Australia needs it too. It would be a good excuse for us to invest in a IFV variant heavier than the ASLAV, which I feel would be useful. We have Abrams and ASLAV's but nothing really in between that could run with the Abrams at the tip of the spear. A system like this has huge psychological value too. I am a damn civvy and am very unlikely to ever be on the receiving end of a bloody 2'' mortar. Even so, the AMOS scares the shit outta me. Bloody glad it is made by nations friendly to mine! Great vid.

    Jonny If you have ever seen the ADF at work, you would realise that 'aiming' is something that the troops are good at. The suits in Canberra are good at missing the mark. Phase 3 may include a tracked IFV. Maybe. If the Boxer is procured and it works well, there is every possibility that they will go with that and not procure the tracked vehicle. Here's to hoping that they do. It would be a damn good idea.

  • @MonMalthias

    To be honest, the wheeled component of LAND 400 is way, way overspecced for protection to the point that there are now big questions over the deployability of the Patria AMV or the RM Boxer. 30-40 ton vehicles of the height and bulk of these beasts means that Australia will now no longer have the ability to redeploy them strategically by air - the RAAF C-130s won't be able to take them. And I believe there are less than 5 Globemasters as well. So it would basically take up our entire Globemaster fleet to transport just one single platoon of wheeled vehicles (4 for hulls, 1 for ammo, crew, armour panels, spare parts). It also means that should either the AMV or Boxer break down, we might not even have the engineering vehicles to recover them, or cruelly overtax what engineering vehicles we do have. The ADF wants to fight like they're in the European theatre, in the middle of the Fulda Gap where armour and firepower determines battles. Or in Afghanistan where they expect to run their wheels over 100kg IEDs because their vehicles are too heavy to not get bogged down in the muddy fields of opium farmers. The ADF should have gone with what works: the CV90 at 25 tons for the tracked component, and perhaps the French VCBI or the Singaporean Terrex for the wheeled component. If the ADF is called upon to fight in the European theatre then the world is about to end in thermonuclear fire and it won't matter what vehicles are deployed if Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney are converted to glass by ballistic missile submarines. If the ADF is called upon to fight in the MENA then the excessive fuel consumption and high ground pressure will force the vehicles to stick to the roads and take IEDs right up the arsehole. And while it is difficult to assure IED survival without MBT levels of weight in armour, it is infinitely easier for insurgents to simply make a bigger bomb. Reliability and mobility are worth more than the extra tons of armour that the AMV and Boxer are weighed down by. France's rapid advance across Mali in operation Serval showed that decisiveness of action requires the utmost of speed and reliability, even when off road, and in terrible infrastructure. Their buildup and staging was also assisted by the strategic mobility of their wheeled brigades - something that heavier vehicles are always trading off against. As for the Hagglunds AMOS, I am all for it. The rapidity of fire delivery that big bore mortars bring is essential no matter where one fights land battles. A CV90 AMOS with STRIX and perhaps an option for a 120mm GLATGM like the Ukrainian Falarick will deliver 90% of the capability that the ADF's gas-guzzling, overweight Abrams provide. The ADF's obsession with big ticket, expensive, strategically immobile assets will prove to be a liability if we ever fight anyone more competent than insurgents.

    I was serving in the military just when the first AMOS came to our base and I was on loan at the mortar company for the basic training (The mortar company hadn't trained NCO's for training of the new privates, possibly due to AMOS coming in.) so I heard the officers talk about the new systems and they were pretty conflicted about it. Yes they saw its benefits but for some reason they never really liked the system as a whole. No idea really why as I was only a conscript and so didn't question the career officers. Although this happened over 10 years ago, so minds might have changed.

    It can of course because it's a heavy object that's affected by gravity and is able to direct kinetic energy in a very small area, a.k.a the tip of the munition,but it is NOT made as an anti armour munition type, it's just able to pierce some armour, the turret top of a vehicle is always going to be stupidly thin.

    The 2S4 Tyulpan can also do that. It fires a 240mm mortar which weighs around 130kg. In addition to the high explosive bombs, it can fire armour-piercing, chemical and nuclear rounds. It can also fire the "Smel'chak" ("Daredevil"), a laser-guided round. However it can't fire chemical rounds anymore cause Russia destroyed all their chemical weapons. It saw action during the conflicts in Afghanistan and Chechnya. In both conflicts, the Smel'chak round consistently destroyed targets quickly, precisely, and with only a few rounds.

    The potential of computer controlled and precision guided mortars in asymmetric warfare is significant as a cost effective strategy for supporting infantry. Artillery and conventional armor have always struggled in CIW. The mobility demands of most CIW are difficult for conventional tactics to deal with because the intensity of the counter threat is difficult to anticipate before a conflict. AMOS has some unique advantages in CIW as well: Great ambush protection with direct fire mode and fully covered turret. Adaptable to IED resistant platforms versus direct fire armor. Excellent range and ROF. Considerably lighter than a MBT. PGMs will be able to target technicals and anti-aircraft guns.

    The multiple round simultaneous impact (MRSI) seems excellent for asymmetric. The detection of rogue elements can be fleeting. Close air support inbound can be seen by them or their friends warning them to scatter. The tracked vehicle moving around the countryside is more discrete with an indirect arc. The increased beaten area of the MRSI improves the odds of striking the soft targets as they mill about in their position. Heavier artillery could do something similiar but the cost per shot goes up. The 120mm seems hit the "sweet spot" for the dollar cost to engage.

    The idea is decent, and it seems to work really well. Only thing I can't help but think, is that it is that the Mortar is meant to be a cheap, light artillery system for the infantry, putting it in a vehicle makes it more expensive and I wonder if a more conventional artillery system isn't more applicable in the long run... But it looks quit effective, and our battalions in Denmark, could benefit from having this in service.

    The term mortar doesn't refer to "infantry artillery", it's just the type of gun they are. I was drafted as an artillery man (m109a3) in the german bundeswehr 15 years ago. If I recall it correctly the classification if a gun is a cannon, howitzer or mortar relies on the ratio barrel length to caliber. I don't know the exact thresholds, but a cannon has a long barrel for its caliber, the mortar a very short barrel and the howitzer lies in between. Unfortunately I couldn't confirm it via wikipedia(german), where they are talking about the type of directing the gun (cannon - direct fire, mortar indirect, howitzer both).

  • @MrBandholm

    @MrBandholm

    Caruma Insane "The term mortar doesn't refer to "infantry artillery", it's just the type of gun they are."... Didn't claim that it was the classification, just what it is most commonly used for. "if a gun is a cannon, howitzer or mortar relies on the ratio barrel length to caliber"... I have never heard that should be the classification... I am not an artillery man, but I have always been told that the difference was in the angle of attack... The gun shoots in flat trajectory, resulting in direct fire. The Mortar shoots in a high-arcing ballistic trajectories, the howitzer is in between... And of course there is the difference of range and shells/bombs.

  • @jonathanmillner
    @jonathanmillner3 жыл бұрын

    This would really make the mortar much more relevant again. In Afghanistan, I fired 60mm mortar when our base was attacked, but it was to shoot the flare so everyone else could shoot their .50cals and mk-19's and such at whatever target. A modern mortar just doesn't have the fire power that other things often have... With something like this... you could fire a few mortar rounds with flares, and then follow up with an entire battery of anti-infantry mortars... with just one vehicle. That's... that's pretty incredible. Probably pretty upgradeable in the sense that a single barrel but 160mm mortar probably wouldn't be that big of a jump if that were a desired thing to bust bigger bunkers or possibly some level of armored stuff or more range... Tons of different types of ammo that can be used for mortars too...
