Eko DUO Update | understanding how the DUO works - ECG/EKG

Ғылым және технология

Today I will share my learning curve with the Eko DUO.
This video is intended for medical professionals with hearing loss (or students) learning to connect to a variety of devices to hear the best at work or school.
Topics on this channel may include:
-challenging situations
-education for family, friends as well as coworkers
-strategies and tips to improve communication
-assistive hearing devices to boost hearing
-hearing loss community
I am not a hearing or ear specialist (Audiologist or ENT), however, I do consider myself an expert on my own hearing loss. I hold a Peer Mentoring Certification from Gallaudet University.
I am not being sponsored, I have paid for all devices myself and I only share my experience and research with you. On this channel I cover hearing loss related topics from my own experiences.

Thank you for your thoughtful review. I didn't know any doctors still made house calls! That is fantastic. I would like to use this to teach auscultation to students (as a cardiac anesthesiologist I teach residents and never leave a widowless OR!). Would you recommend this for the phonocardiograms on an iPhone for teaching? Does it also graphically record lung sounds?

Hi Pyotr Pumpkinhead, seeing that I am out in the field a lot, I would go insane in a windowless OR!!! Bless you! I have tried to teach with the DUO using the phonocardiogram but I have found that the iPhone audio is pretty low for even a small classroom (even with the volume all the way up) but may be fine one-on-one. I have not tried to connect to a wireless/or direct speaker to my phone (you have me thinking). What I did find is that the Eko web based dashboard is MUCH better with the audio on a computer with the built in speakers which I recently started using. As far as the lung sounds, I can hear them pretty well with the DUO but the graphic are not ideal and for that reason I haven't experimented much with lung sounds graphically...as of yet anyway. I would say that the phonocardiogram is great if you could get the volume louder. As far as lung sounds graphically, I can't recommend since I have limited experience with it. Hope that helps. Thank you for your comment!! DD

Hi Georgi Stepanyan, Thanks for the question. The DUO obtains single lead tracing, all you would be able to see is if there is ST changes at a glance. Since the tracing is digital, it would be hard to measure the ST elevation/depression (that I have found anyway). I wouldn't use the DUO as a diagnostic tool for MI (STEMI, NSTEMI, Angina), best to obtain a 12 lead to look a multiple leads in a clinical setting. Perhaps a cardiologist would think differently...and of course if a patient has symptoms such as CP, SOB, N/V, diaphoresis, etc. they would need an ambulance and ER visit. I would however use the DUO for arrthymias and murmurs and investigate further or refer as necessary. Hope that helps.

Hello! I am again!! I love your videos. I have a question, for hearing Loss which stethoscope is better? Littmann CORE or EKO DUO?

Hi Adel...thank you for watching the videos and I certainly hope you are finding value in them. I am going to be very transparent with my answer...I use the CORE more than I use the DUO at the moment. For me, I just find that the CORE is more practical for me in my work settings. But I am still using the DUO when I can. It's a learning curve for sure. Choosing the right stethoscope for you is going to be so personalized . Let us know what you decide. Take care

@@healthyhearingloss9953 Thank you for answer me and your opinion about them. For better auscultation and sounds for hearing Loss, do you think that CORE is better?

  • @healthyhearingloss9953

Hi Adel, I wish I could provide a direct answer but because everyone's hearing loss varies, I am not able to do that. I will say that for amplification the DUO has 32x and the CORE has 40x the amplification. So with that being said, I would think the CORE would provide slightly more volume for most people, it does for me. As far as how each sounds individually, they sound similar to me in regards to actually hearing bodily sounds. However, if you are looking for louder and deeper sounds, the Thinklabs is also a great option and it has 100x amplifications. Here is a comparison chart from AMPHL: www.amphl.org/comparison-table. Hope that helps.

Halo doc, so for daily practice which one do you recommend, it is duo or core? Which one have the better sound?

Hi Laurent yuwono, I work as an NP and I am often called doc by my patients regardless of how much I educate on the difference. With that being said, I’m not offended if I’m called doc but I do feel it’s important to note. I have severe to profound hearing loss and I have found that the CORE has been my go too for many reasons…one is that I do feel I hear better with it but I have to admit it’s probably because I use it the most. I’ve had more time to train my ears to adapt with the CORE. Some people may have different opinions based on the hearing loss level and time spent using different devices. I am hoping others will share their experiences to give people options that may best fit their need. Thanks for your question and watching. Also please share what you decide.

Hi Rowena Hibler, If you can connect your ear pods to your phone that has the eko app, you are good to go. The key is to have bluetooth ear pods that connects to the bluetooth on your phone...I hope that makes sense. Once you are able to connect to the phone through the Eko app, the DUO is ready to go.

I would think you would need bluetooth ear buds/pods to stream through the DUO app via phone. I have never tried it with ear buds, only directly to my hearing aids which would could be considered as ear buds.
