"On the streets, you don't wish for things. You just wait for them to happen. Because you cannot control really anything", EJ responded trying to think of a second and third wish.
EJ is homeless in Hollywood. He is 18, and when he told me he has been homeless for 11 years, I could not even comprehend to do the math. (I'm a drummer and drummers can't count past 4 anyway)
I cannot even imagine being on the streets at such a young age. I once interviewed a kid in Wichita homeless at 5 years old bit.ly/H2uOWq. I know how horrible my first day homeless was as an adult, so my heart breaks thinking about what these kids must have done through. But to them, the streets were better than the abuse they were going through.
We will never end homelessness until we can fix families!

I have, in the many years since this video, become an apartment manager and I am also a fulltime student in college. I was on the streets for 3 1/2 years after this video was posted. I am currently in contact with the creators to do a follow up video. If you guys have any questions, I don't mind answering them. But can we stop saying I overdosed on Fentanyl, please? Because, wow. @@l.arandom1631 I count on my fingers for things like that quite often because I didn't have a proper education. I try to force myself to find other ways to do it but it's easy to revert back to simple ways when you weren't taught things at a certain age or missed out on consolidating those concepts for whatever reason. Basic addition, subtraction etc - these things are all taught. People sometimes can't comprehend what it's like to skip that and then try to navigate day to day math as an adult. It happens to many people, not just people who didn't do middle or high school (like me).

Just because someone may be in a worse position than you, it doesn't mean that all your problems are insignificant. What I mean is, you may not have the worst luck in the world but your own problems are still there and you don't have to guilt trip yourself and force yourself to be happy. Where's this kid's white privilege?
@SabakaJunglay
4 жыл бұрын
@@thatsright4194 White privilege doesn't mean a minimum standard of living for white folks, it means if a white and dark person are put in equal situations, the white person will be more likely (but not guaranteed) to get a better outcome due to conscious and unconscious bias. So they are more likely to be hired even if dark people are equally qualified, they get better options for housing from landlords and sometimes slightly cheaper rent, people are more likely to assume they're good and law-abiding people, etc. So for example, if a white homeless youth and a black, native or brown homeless youth are both asking for money on the street, the white youth might make $10 in an hour and the other youth make $5 or $6 because passersby got a less favourable impression of them.

He sees "money" and "enlisting in the army" as his only options , but what about how he wants to feel, his passions and dreams, he said he's not even thinking of those sorts of things, because he's in survival mode, he's not able to go deeper within himself... Wishing only the best for this kid who is in his 20's now, hoping he has seen past the illusion of "life happens to me", and realizes he is 100% responsible for his life 🙏
@franciscomsosa

HonestInquiry dude he’s not responsible for his parents dying. That idea of being 100% responsible comes from stoicism, and it is in reference to things that are within your control. Your parents dying is not within your control. If not being strong and forward thinking, evaluating the idea of enlisting in the army, and taking action towards that is not being responsible I don’t know what world you live in. Most people just beg for money. Homelessness is a complicated problem with no one answer, and certainly survival and stability should precede passions. Maslow’s Hierarchy even mentions survival before self actualization. That idealism is toxic man, gotta be grounded too - it’s not an illusion.

@davidjohnston710

Can being homeless cause mental illness - if it is prolonged maybe? Hunger and malnutrition? I once heard a reforming prisoner, in half-way house, say that the difference between being a criminal and a normal person is “the ability to make long range life plans, and carry through on the steps”. This requires some education about life goals, career planning, finances - things that good schools and families should teach children. I think there must be competing attention between immediate needs vs. making long range plans for a homeless person. What is sad is when they give up on any long range plans. That’s when they need a helping agency to put them in touch with education, job and housing opportunities. I applaud this young man for at least having a plan to lift him up - Army. Why he didn’t accept the earlier help provided (foster care) is a question - but, I suppose something might have gone very wrong there. Every case is different and requires good foster parents and counseling. Maybe this young man never had the opportunity to deal with the tragedy of his parents’ death in counseling.
