    I wish we had these training accessories when I started bowling in the late 70’s. Our coach had us shadow bowl with a sock or small ball. Practice staying square to the lanes locking your arm once you push the ball out in front and keeping your thumb at 3 o’clock position and the ball resting in your palm. This keeps you from griping or squeezing the ball with your thumb. If your hand position changes too soon and your thumb gets to the 6 o’clock position too soon you will drop the ball or feel the ball slipping off your hand. Most people will compensate by griping the ball. The results are you lose power, roll, drive and you hold the ball too long past the delivery point.

    This gives the best understanding of why we need a thumb hole tighter than I've ever seen explained before. I always wondered why pro's thumbs would get abused after all the games they played.

    Jesus finally, I have been watching video after video and the release is so quick its insanely hard to determine what is really happening. I am a 170 bowler and I do not spin/release the ball properly at all knowing this I have been on the hunt for a video to explain what is really happening. Ive seen get your thumb out first which is correct but great what after that? I was lifting up with my fingers thinking that creates revs, bless this man for making it simple. thank you

    get that release trainer brother, I have it, it an amazing tool. It made me realize that i wasnt rolling the ball, and showed me that i needed to stay behind the ball, using my fingers and let the ball do the work for me. I had it all wrong turning around the ball, my fingers never came through the ball always around it and this helped me change that, it zeros in on what the finger feel should be upon release, Cup, uncup and roll, and youll see ball reaction like youve never seen

    This seems very helpful. I am a high school bowler, and I have been struggling with thumb problems since I started. I think it is because I’m not letting gravity do the work for releasing from my hand in the “flat zone” you showed. I will definitely try this!

    Correct squeezing or griping the ball upon delivery causes the thumb problems your having. Keep practicing this drill ensuring your thumb comes out first. Let gravity take control during swing and the weight of the ball shift to your shoulder via pendulum swing and you will see it’s much easier to stay under or behind the ball depending your style of delivery. Lots of guys I bowled with in high school all wear braces for their wrist, elbow or both because the intense pressure of ripping through the delivery for extra rotation. Balls were not as strong as they are now. Save yourself pain and injury by mastering these tutorials.

    Not a hard release...i just tell people to focus on their thumb and getting it to point to the ground as fast as they can at the point of release..This creates that yo yo effect thats shown here and your fingers will automatically do what they are suppose to do.

    I suck at releasing; always gets stuck on the thumb because I release way too high. I'm going to test this method out at practice tomorrow!

    Get the rev trainer from them it’s a big time help, I got one and it made the light go off on how to attain the right revolutions to a bowling balling because it isolates it so you can see how your ball will be rotating

    i still tense up my arm sometimes and i'm thinking about it in the back swing since i grew up muscling the ball. how do i trust the ball isn't going to slip off my fingers if i don't curl them up a bit at the end.. ihave a reverse grip ..ringfinger is a little less snug due to joint stiffness and arthritis. so i feel like every release is a little different. i will try the swing trainer

    AL BUNDY Never had that problem I can’t get that damm ball off my hand 🖐 but I finally figured it out. Totally unconventional I break my wrist, which puts the ball in the right path. Who would of thought ?

    So, I'm from the old school of lifting with the fingers. Am I understanding this right, we do not turn our wrist at all, but just stay behind it and release like a yo-yo with nothing more done to the hand? I'm just trying to understand, I practiced this for 7 games but seamed like my ball never hooked but was like a top spinning down the lane. What was I possibly doing wrong?

    you have to cup then rapidly uncup and roll the ball of your hand and let your fingers impart the rotation, the fingers only have to turn between an 1 in to 4 inches. The wrist doest turn at all, unless your working the inside of the bowling ball with your wrist cocked and cupped then your wrist will uncock when you uncup and roll the ball. It takes work but its very worth it, I practiced with my release trainer and with my bowling ball rolling into a bunch of pillows on my couch, youll see the rotation your fingers bring staying behind the ball. I came from the same school of thought you did, i was wrist turning around the ball never staying behind it, Now i stay behind the ball and with practice my scores have shot up, bets of luck man

    I am a new subscriber and I do have a question. Shortly after I push the ball away to start my approach what exactly is keepingthe ball from falling. The more I do what they teach is to relax your hand in your arm as much as possible I feel like I may drop the ball immediately after I start. What is the correct timing/thought process and how can I remove this fear. I can start with my wrist in a cup position but isn’t that pressure or isn’t that considered grip pressure

    Thumb has to be at 3 o’clock position. At that point you are under the ball and it’s resting in your hand. Pushing off and creating the swing helps shift the weight of the ball to your shoulders via the pendulum swing. No need to squeeze the ball to hold on, you can relax your hand and deliver a good roll

    Damn I wish I had these lessons at 7yrs old. I always did the complete opposite. Bend wrist back and then "flick it" forwards on the release.

    Just snapping the yo yo straight forward like this is portraying sends the ball forward with next to no rotation to curve.

    this is so hard for me i have been a grip and rip player for years, the balls have changed so much i took 12 years off and am just coming back, im trying to switch over..

    it'll be hard to do because you're brain is telling the hands to do the release, its taught nowadays to let the big muscles do it for you, if you grip it right and you tell the shoulders to do it at a certain point, the shoulder will tell the arm what to do, then the arm tells the hands to "unload", then fingers "lifts" because its there incidentally. Bio-mechanical test showed the flat spot was never parallel to the floor. i'm not a biomechanic expert but just my 2 cents.

    Fantastic video. Personally, I never find the "because a pro does it" argument very compelling. Still a fantastic video, I just think the argument could be stronger for reasons other than, someone better that you is doing it, so it must be correct.

    Hello, I have been watching this instructional video over and over and your are correct on the release!!! I have been trying to get better at it and the video you referenced isn't quite it.     Dozens and dozens of pros making videos on the yo-yo release. But...amazingly...NONE of them showing bowlers WHEN to TURN the hand. Straight up behind the ball gives forward roll but no hook. WHEN is the hand turned? Without turn, there is nothing. SOMEBODY start showing a release and emphasize WHEN/WHERE to TURN the ball.....PL-EASE!!!

    If you're working the inside of the ball, coming up behind it definitely creates hook. The ball naturally turns the hand as you let it go if your hand is in the right position working the inside.

    He says the rotation we see is the reaction. Not the action. And everyone’s reaction is different. It’s something they don’t think about. It’s the action before that got them there. If you focus on trying to copy someone’s reaction. Well… you will over look the special sauce that makes it happen. End up like me. For 12 years I have been meat hooking the ball like a cave man.

    This release is not easy to do at all. What % of bowlers can actually do this release? About 5 % and most or.nearly all are pros.

    Jay Boek it’s not that it’s hard, but that very few know (or realize) this is the proper way to do it. Most of us think that we have to manipulate the ball. Older players, (over 40 like me) grew up on “lifting” the ball with the finger and/or rotating fingers around the ball and that is not how to do it . Not anymore.

    This is the modern day release if you watch all the Jr bowlers today they do it even young 10-12 year old girls are doing it and getting tremendous rev rate. It's just practice and timing for us old school bowlers. But it's not that hard

    I see all these videos that tell you that you need to ‘yo-yo’ release the ball to get revs and power. You need to stay behind the ball. You need to keep your fingers under the ball. What they don’t tell is the immense strength you need in order to do this. You see very few women able to do this. Most ‘normal’ bowlers, women or men, are physically unable to do this. I have bowled my whole life, averaged in the 230’s for a decade, and I cannot do this, no matter how hard I try. You have to weight train for years, or own bowling lanes and do this for hours every week, every month. Or just be a huge guy with incredible wrist strength. Most people don’t do this. Not because they don’t want to, but because they physically cannot. And never will. Not with 3 or 5 pound tools like these. You would have to start with 10 pounds and slowly work your way up, every day, for at least a year. Trust me. Nobody has the time to do this, unless you quit school or work. There’s not enough money in bowling to bother.

    Not true. You can find a spot in time during the downswing to cuff your wrist right before the release. You don’t have to cuff it the whole time. Do a search on the low down method. Lots of skinny small Asian kids can do it. Smaller females can do it too. Daria Pajak has one of the best releases I have ever seen.
