Eighty Years' War (1568 - 1648) Every Month

The 80 years war or Dutch war of Independence was a war that would bring the Netherlands into a golden age posing as a rival to England and France. In return this was one of the Key events which brought the Downfall of a Spanish Superpower. This will show this Conflict Every Month

Independence wars usually only involve one place, the nation that's rebelling for independence. But, the Dutch took it everywhere. Brazil, India, Malaysia, Mars, Saturn, Pluto. They were everywhere.

in those days, many soldiers were mercs, and when you don't pay them, they might turn on you. ;p the Dutch hired lots of mercs in those days too, and being a rich trade nation with an increasing merchant fleet, the coffers didn't empty easily for them.

The financial state of Phillip II crown was weak in the 1570 decade, so the troops had a hard time not being paid for months, and some mutinied until some pay arrived. When in the 80s new traddes of american silver were established, it was possible to provide more money to pay the flanders troops.

@@AwoudeX Except the fact that Spanish tercios weren't mercenaries and stayed months even years without being paid and still kept fighting for their empire. There were some insurrections but they were not mercenaries by far. The dutch on the other side... The first and second rebellions were fought by mercs against spanish troops and the majority of the netherlands population weren't independentists. They rejected the protestant invasions. But with the time and everyone being against Spain and the Habsburgs of Viena, plus Spain doing what we do best (fighting and getting broke xd) the war ended in a peace favorable to the protestants plus France and the secession of Netherlands (Belgium was still Spanish until begginings of 18th century).

Need to mention MAJOR historical inaccuracies, so big that I gave this video a dislike: * Valenciennes was a lot lower on the map * According to this video, the Dutch revolters gained some territory in the County of Holland in August 1568. This was the year in which William of Orange invaded the Netherlands with three different units from the eastern border with an army of mercenaries. None of this units ever made it to Holland and in contrast to what Orange had hoped for, there didn't start a revolt amongst the people. * The mouth of the Ems played a certain role in this invasion, which probably would've went differently if East Frisia was in Spanish hands at the time. In reality, East Frisia has never been in Spanish hands. * And then the video states: "May 1569 - March 1572: Ceasefire Occurs between the Dutch and Spanish Forces." In reality, the entire Netherlands were under control of the Spaniards again before the year 1569 started. 1 April 1572 was the date on which this would change again. * Orange's invasion began in April 1568, not in January 1568. * The Spanish victory at Harlem took place in July 1573, not in February 1574. * The Pacification of Ghent took place in 1576, not in 1577. * I see fictitious warfare in the period when the Union of Brussels existed (1577-1579). * And the list goes on and on. I advise non-Dutch speakers who want to see more accurate maps of this period in Dutch history to go to the Dutch Wikipedia articles about the years in which this took place. 1572, 1573, 1574, 1575, etc.

Ther is a mistake on the minimap for the south cone of South America. The spanish had by then only colonised the Plata River estuary and basin and you left it blank while coloring indian land.... but its ok as its the least important of the maps here, even Angola saw more Portuguese-Dutch fighting. The most important part of the video, their european war, seems really well made!

First they didn't think of becoming a republic. They wanted a new king who would be nicer. First they tried, I believe the brother of the French king, and after that some Duke from England. But they both ended up being a bit of a cunt and the Dutch didn't like them. As far as I can remember. Search Wikipedia for the details I'd say.

Because the Dutch government appointed both an English and French governor to get more foreign support. The English governor was sacked after some military disasters and easy capitulations by English troops. While the French governor tried to launch a coup against the Dutch states to gain more power and escaped the country after his troops were massacred in the streets.

They were not really the Spanish Empire though. The low countries was a collection of relatively independent states with each their constitutions. It was part of the Habsburg (Holy Roman) Empire. Emperor Charles V had the title of "Lord" of the Netherlands. He was also born there. When he left the throne, he split up the Habsburg Empire and his son Phillip II of Spain now became Lord of the Netherlands. After this it all went south quickly and within just 15 years the war started. Mainly because he ignored the oaths his father had taken. He replaced local governers with spanish nationals, which led to a brutal regime of religious prosecution and extreme taxation. At one point nearly 50% of the Spanish Empire's tax income came from the Netherlands.

The problems Spain encountered are nothing new, it happened to former "global" powers, and later to others. At the end you run out of resources having to confront different theater's at the same time, and specially when your foe is playing on his land and with local support. You simply have insufficient troops to control the territory. It happened to the Spaniards in the Nertherlands, as it happened to the British in the United States (the US Continental Army at its peak outnumbered the British 1:10), Napoleonic France in Spain and Russia, the URSS in Afghanistan, US in Vietnam, Irak and Afghanistan. The US would have already be bankrupt with all the money being printed it they did not impose their currency after WWII as the World's Reserve.

Hi! I'm Spanish and I have to say that I feel what we did, but I must say that this war was lost but won by both contenders, for example in the case of Spain if it had not been because we waged many wars in many places, Spain would have, feeling it a lot, crushed that rebellion. Spain más fighting at that time, practically, alone against: dutchs, englands, frenchs, german protestants, turks... and if you see the treaty of Utrecht, Spain conquered the Dutchs: Brussels, Dunkirk, Antwerp, Ghent, Leuven, Brugues... We lost on one side this war because of typical fail of make war in two fronts and more..., but we one it because we avoided the Dutchs and frenchs to conquer Flandes, luxemburg... if not Belgium would be today also Holland. 😀😎
