Eight Views of Cats - Update #1

Woodblock printmaker David Bull brings an update on the Eight Views of Cats project being undertaken by his Mokuhankan print workshop in Asakusa, Tokyo.
The project got under way in June 2019, and after three months, a number of interesting designs have been received, and are introduced here.
The project schedule - it was originally intended that submissions would be accepted only through the summer of 2019 - has been extended, and submissions will now be accepted on an open-ended basis until each of the eight themes has been decided. For more details, please see the project website:

I gave up the moment it's revealed that there's already up to 1000+ submissions so far in total. 13 out of 1176 is quite an absurd ratio of probability to have the design I submitted to be accepted.

PS: would love to see the full carving of a block, without comments, just the noise of construction, of one of these prints. Edit. The one with the restaurant owner giving fish to the cat (Vivien?), I would probably grab right away, as I have a few memories with this. Working in a small ryokan on a small island, the cats of the neighborhood were eating leftover sashimi. Not sashimi leftovers, meaning not the cut away stuff, but the actual sashimi. Reason: island with many fishermen, including the owner's father, abundance of fresh raw fish. Unthinkable in other parts of Japan. (disclaimer: its not net fishing) Is this going to be a subscription? Also, you giving money to the artists for the further detailing of the first drafts? I don't think that there are many submission contests, where the organizers actually realize that ppl have to pay bills, and that it takes a lot of work(time), which might be difficult to invest, if one has to work in part-time jobs, etc.
