시놉시스: “건축은 스토리텔링이고 여행이며 대화다. 또한 당신이 진정 누구인지를 탐험하는 일이기도 하다.” 건축계의 노벨상인 프리츠커상을 받은 인도의 건축가 발크리시나 도시의 철학이다. 이 말을 증명하듯, 그가 직접 카메라 앞에 서서 자신이 설계한 건축물로 우리를 안내한다. 1951년 도시는 현대 건축의 거장 르 코르뷔지에의 프로젝트에 참여해 ‘삶의 진화를 일으키는 행위로서의 건축’이라는 코르뷔지에의 철학에 크게 감화된다. 이후 그는 독자적인 건축물을 선보이며 아마다바드의 인도학 연구소, 극장, CEPT 대학교를 비롯해 저소득층을 위한 대규모 주택 단지 건설에 힘을 쏟는다. 그의 건축은 그곳에서 살아갈 사람들, 그들의 역사적, 문화적 맥락의 반영이라고 평가된다. 건축과 사람을 잇고, 그 사이를 가로지르는 도시야말로 진정한 탐험가임이 분명하다.
“Architecture is storytelling, a journey, and a conversation. It is also an exploration of who you really are.” This is the philosophy of Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi, winner of the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize. As if to prove his point, he steps in front of the camera and takes us on a journey through the buildings he has designed. In 1951, Doshi participated in a project by Le Corbusier, the master of modern architecture, and was deeply influenced by his philosophy of ‘architecture as an act of evolving life.’ Doshi went on to create his own architecture, building the Indian Institute of Humane Studies in Ahmedabad, a theater, and the CEPT University alongside large-scale housing complexes for low-income families.
It is said that his architecture is a reflection of the people who live there, as well as their historical and cultural context. Doshi is undoubtedly a true explorer, connecting architecture and people and traversing the space between them.
