    Would be interesting to see you play with jetting to see how it responds to lean vs rich mixture, and whether you could actually increase performance or mileage respectively. And show in action how this could be helpful in dialing in the carburetor from start, as well as using it as a gauge on when the jet should be changed due to seasonal differences in weather, etc. Also, it would be nice to see an alert (red LED, beeping sound) when it hits danger-zone-.. if the Koso supports this.

    @@49ccscoot It's been a while. I found this video again because I'm now seriously considering purchasing an EGT sensor. But I was hoping that you'd do a follow up video on how useful the device actually was in dialing in the carburetor jetting etc., and whether you gained any new insights as opposed to going by feel (were you able to safely run a bit leaner, for example?). Have I missed something (have you already done this this as a part of another video) or do you have plans to revisit the topic? I think it people would be highly interested in seeing how this could help improve performance and fuel economy (especially these days) while lowering the risk of cylinder seizure.

    @@insoninenine8749 I've mentioned it in other videos, but haven't done anything specifically about it. I can sum it up very quickly. EGT has been an incredibly useful tuning tool. I watched CHT for years and now I don't pay much attention to it. EGT gives a much better idea of what's happening at the moment. The combination of EGT and CHT can prove useful, but if I chose one it would be EGT. I don't really tune for fuel economy, but you can see when it's getting hot enough to worry about the piston much better. It makes identifying lean or rich spots in the throttle so much easier. Highly recommend for 2T tuners.

    I enjoy the channel. Thanks for sharing: the tips are practical and insightful. No point trying to get absolute EGT temperature down to the last degree - it will depend on the engine, sensor itself, placement and other things. Comparing temperature with other setups to replicate the jetting based on temperature might not work. What will work is to plot the EGT against RPM to see if you can lean it out more or already over the hill: if temperature goes up as rpm increases - you are on the rich (safe) side. If the temperature starts dropping - you should check your jetting for that throttle position. Nothing is of course black and white with 2 strokes unfortunately. But if your sensor is calibrated - it will help to get an idea of what’s going on. No need for EGT to be able to measure - at 1200C - your melted piston would tell you that well before the sensor could pick it up :-) Next one to try is the lambda sensor. I have never used it on anything less than 125cc and it would be great to see if someone gave it a go.

    @@49ccscoot Yeah it's not exactly easy : I had to cut small 10mm chunks of solder, place them on the edge of the bung and heat them to get them to melt and flow to the right places, trying to use whole sticks usually got them stuck. But if you do it on a surface that was well cleaned (I used an angle grinder to get to the clean metal and make some asperities for the solder to have good grip) and use the correct flux, it gives a nice weld that just needs a bit of filing to get rid of the small irregularities. Since I didn't have access to nor know anyone with a TiG/MiG welder I bought the oxypropane brazer for an easier job. Using a normal propane torch works too, but it takes much more time to melt the solder, After that, a bit of high-temp paint over the weld and you're all done. :) And since silver solder only melts at around 650°C, for a weld that's square in the airflow you won't ever really risk melting it, even when the bike is stationary.

    I have the KOSO sensor and display as well, but haven't mounted it yet. I will be installing it on a Minarelli Vertical exhaust system for a Pre-Bug. The location is going to be tight!! I'm wondering if angling the sensor would affect readings, instead of going in to a bung at 90 degrees, what if the bung was designed at an angle, then welded on and the sensor inserted in to the exhaust stream. please let me know your thoughts. This way of installing would be for tight clearance around the pipe and chassis.

    Usually there's 0.01mm difference from one letter to the next. So a B should be 0.01mm larger than an A. The only way to really know what's what is to do precise measurements of the piston and the bore and come up with piston to cylinder clearance figures. That said, usually when I bother to try to get the correct piston, the clearances change so rapidly that the 0.01mm doesn't matter in no time. Some just hand hone their cylinders. It's all I did with the TPR and new pistons. I used Scotchbrite maroon pads. 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/11175/simple-cylinder-cleaning-honing-techniques

    First thought is to make sure it's not an instrument/test issue. See if it produces a spark on a spark tester or plug. You could also try checking pickup output to make sure it's not losing signal. If it is, it may be the reluctor/pickup gap if you're lucky.

    Awesome video! I saw you breeze through your EGT instal on the RC-One and decided to check this video out -- I was not disappointed! I'm wondering if you have any thoughts on silver-soldering/brazing a bung in place instead of welding. melting temp for the silver solder I have seems to be around 1200F but my guess is the pipe doesn't get to the same temperature as the gasses at their peak heat... right? Maybe brazing is a dumb idea. I don't own any type of welder, so I'm trying to think of a work around because this seems like a cool sensor to have. Any help would be appreciated!

  • @49ccscoot

    I don't know much about brazing. I've done it to repair an exhaust, because the 2T pipe was too thin for the flux core that I had at the time. I didn't use silver solder. Can't honestly recall exactly what I used. I see other vids showing silver solder used, but you'd be better off to consult someone more knowledgeable than me on that part. Just get yourself one of the compression fitting styles if in doubt. Then you need a hole the correct size and you basically clamp it on. Super simple. If you decide to do a bung later, it can go in that hole.

    Pretty cool to see these finally being used to help tune 2 strokes! I've been going by EGT for years now and it's never let me down. There's certain times and places that you just can't really tell if your engine is leaning out or just a hair too fat. This method is failsafe way to learn what your engine is in need of and yes helps you prevent catastrophic engine failure from detonation if you can't hear it or it's running right on the edge of meltdown. One would think that any higher end equipment that utilized a 2 stroke now a days would come with a EGT kinda like a lot of Diesels do. Exhaust gases in any engine no matter how many cycles they have are no different than trying to read a air fuel ratio guage in theory they're doing the same thing, in a lean condition it's going to run hot as apposed to a rich condition running much cooler. But these also help you with your ignition timing as well for the same reasons. Great video and glad to see that this technique is being used for your scooters. I run anything from 2 stroke rc drag cars to big ones like in my golf cart, not stock BTW lol. But it's a great tool and it will save you time and money let alone a possible engine in the future when you have one and know what your looking at.

    Mine runs no thermostat, full flow at all times, and has 2 large radiators so I normally see 100-150F coolant temps. Below 100F will be really cold weather. 150F is gonna be the extreme high on a hot day doing wide open passes. CHT depends some on how effective the cylinder head design is. For example, a 1 piece head shows higher CHT for me than modular heads with more flow around the combustion chamber area. Most of the time I'd say between about 180-250F CHT, but it could go higher. On air cooled stuff it can get much hotter. Depending on the gauge and sender setup, some see over 400F CHT. Most of mine have never ran much above 300F. Again, water cooled aren't getting that high for me though. Water temp and CHT are pretty separate things. They can both reflect engine stress, but coolant temp is a poor indicator there. It should be used primarily to make sure the liquid is cool enough and to look for potential warning signs like unusual high temps that may be telling you there's a head gasket issue.

    Another little bit of info for you; top notch 2T folks like Jan Thiel and Frits Overmars have talked about problems with high strung 2Ts and part throttle even with all of their experience. Some of it is the nature of two-strokes and some of it in my case is the carb. I can swap my other carb on that's normal with jets and needles and it works fine. Also remember that if you haven't burned a piston in a 2T, you haven't tried hard enough. No offense meant, but I can't think of anyone I know that has a fast 2T that has never wrecked a piston.

Not sure if it's that global supply issue or something else, but they are not around like they used to be right now. I see Gixal gears cheap on AliExpress when searching "GY6 50 gear set" on google. ScootersToGo also has a set on their eBay store. You may have to do some checking to be sure they're what you want, but Scooters To Go is knowledgeable and can probably help if you go that route.

    How to install an AFR gauge on a carbureted 2 stroke?

  • @49ccscoot

    @49ccscoot

    2 жыл бұрын

    Pretty similar to an EGT install placement, just with a larger bung. You should use an adapter on a two-stroke to help prevent fouling though. Koso has them. The oil and conditions in a 2T exhaust may foul sensors quickly, so most recommend either an adapter or using them only as long as necessary to tune or both. If you want a way to monitor the tune all of the time, EGT probes are much more resilient. The main tradeoff is that you don't see such a direct indication of mixture.

  • @49ccscoot

    @49ccscoot

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@harrysingh3268 AFR gauges work fine for carbs. The only wideband that I use is on one of my carbureted four-strokes. It's the same gauge that I was using on my fuel injected Mustang before it was repurposed. Installing it is just like the install of this EGT. It has a harness that goes from the sensor to the gauge and power connections for the gauge and that's it. The hardest part is installing the bung, again just like the bung for the EGT but larger. I would position and clock it just like the EGT probe, though I have heard some say that position is not as critical. I think getting it in a hotter point of the exhaust may help to keep it cleaner, but I've never used a wideband on a two-stroke to tell you for sure. I would suggest doing tuning passes and seeing what works before trusting the gauge. Mine displays the air/fuel ratio that I'd expect when it's jetted properly, but never take that for granted.

    Problem.. there is no guarantee those are the temps the piston top is seeing. Even advancing the ignition will cause EGT temps to drop but the combustion is still the same temp. Retarding ignition will cause them to go higher. I only trust these things when I have a KNOWN solid jetting setup then use the egt readings as a baseline to compare against changes I make. The reported numbers are meaningless. When it reads 1100f is it really? Could be 1000 or could be 1200.

    No not overcomplicating. This is really advanced shit. In europe you can put a moped/ motorcycle on the dyno to get it jetted/ tuned to perfection. They use a exhaust tool like this. Besides most motorcylces are 4 strokes and dont really care as much as twostrokes. Also in the netherlands we have races that are called the freetech 50. You can only use a 50cc displacement but people push more than 22 hp out of a 50cc, you think they did that by just jetting a bit?
