Efren Reyes History And Reyes Best shots, 5 Reasons Why Efren Reyes is Better than Earl Strickland
When we talk about legendary pro pool players, the 2 names that will surely come out are Efren “Bata” Reyes from Philippines and Earl “the Pearl” Strickland from the United States. It’s because both of them are considered as two of the greatest pro pool players of all time in the world. Also, their origins that are from 2 different continents make them have different fan bases. They also have met in matches against each other numerous times and Reyes has defeated Strickland in some of those matches but Strickland has defeated Reyes in the other matches as well. So, in order to compare who is better between them, then we can just see at their achievements. Based on that, here are the 5 reasons why Efren Reyes is better than Earl Strickland.
Number 3.
World Cup of Pool. Unlike other pool tournaments that are participated by pro pool players privately, the World Cup of Pool is participated by countries represented by pro pool players of those countries. In this case, Efren “Bata” Reyes has represented Philippines with Francisco “Django” Bustamante several times and they have won the annual event twice in 2006 and 2009. On the other hand, Earl “the Pearl” Strickland has represented the United Stated in the World Cup of Pool only once with Rodney Morris. Ironically, in his only participation of the World Cup of Pool in 2006, team USA that was represented by Strickland and Morris was defeated by team Philippines that was represented by Reyes and Bustamante. So, it was a direct win for Reyes against Strickland in the World Cup of Pool. That surely makes Reyes better than Strickland in the World Cup of Pool, not to mention that Reyes won another World Cup of Pool in 2009 that makes him even much better than Strickland.
Number 2.
BCA Hall of Fame Induction. As you might have known, both Efren “Bata” Reyes and Earl “the Pearl” Strickland have been inducted in the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame. Reyes was inducted in the BCA Hall of Fame in 2003 while Strickland was inducted in 2006. From that, it can be seen that Reyes was inducted to the BCA Hall of Fame earlier than Strickland. It’s quite surprising because Strickland won both of the most prestigious pool tournaments, the US Open 9-Ball Championship and the WPA World 9-Ball Championship, much earlier than Reyes. If Reyes won the US Open 9-Ball Championship in 1994, then Strickland had his first win in the US Open 9-Ball Championship in 1984 or 10 years earlier. Also, if Reyes won the World Professional Pool Championship, an alternative to the WPA World 9-Ball Championship, in 1999, then Strickland had his first win in the WPA World 9-Ball Championship in 1990, meaning that he is the first champion of the WPA World 9-Ball Championship. So, it means that although Strickland has those wins much earlier than Reyes, there were other factors that Reyes was much better at than Strickland at that time that made Reyes being inducted to the BCA Hall of Fame earlier than Strickland. So, in this part, Reyes is still better than Strickland
Number 1.
2001 Tokyo Open Championship. Along his career as a pro pool player, Efren “Bata” Reyes has won numerous pool tournaments. One of the greatest pool tournaments that he has ever won is the 2001 Tokyo Open Championship. The 2001 Tokyo Open Championship was a very great tour because it was participated by more than 700 participants and it offered a total amount of prize money worth 100 million Yen or about 850,000 US Dollars with a winner’s share of 20 million Yen or about 170,000 US Dollars. Fortunately, Reyes was able to win the great tournament by defeating a Dutch pro pool player Niels Feijen in the grand final round with 15 against 7 racks won. For winning the tournament, Reyes was granted a champion title as well as a reward worth around 170,000 US Dollars, making it the largest winner prize money in pool tournament at that time. On the other hand, Strickland didn’t even participate in the tournament and so he has nothing to do with it. However, Reyes’ great achievement in the 2001 Tokyo Open Championship still makes him much better than Strickland.
Well, those are the 5 reasons why Efren Reyes is better than Earl Strickland. If you have something to add, please feel free to write it down in the comment section. Also, don’t forget to subscribe to our channel for more videos like this. Thanks for watching and see you on the next video.

Efren is the GOAT though. What a cool guy. Never gets upset, humble, generous, and gifted with ability. Enjoys the challenge and celebrates quietly.

You forget the 14x derby classic champion a pro player can win once twice or may thrice but on efren reyes it was on different level i dont think any pro player can achieve or even can go near on that achievement

I agree with the premise here, and these are good reasons, but I see it a different way. Consider that after the "The Color of Money" match Reyes went on to win over 30 championships beating all the champions that played in ALL the major events. The name of the event is not the deciding factor because he's FACING AND BEATING THE SAME CHAMPS IN DIFFERENT VENUES. Furthermore, he seriously dominated the Derby City Classics all over the place, in games where some of the other greats failed miserably. He also went on to win most of the major money events against the best of the best, and he did it when it counted, just when everyone said (more than once) that the event would prove who is the greatest. I could go on. He was not the best at 9-Ball, but he was better at 8-Ball and One-Pocket and other games than the 9-ball elite. So, overall, Efren definitely is THE GOAT, as per over 90% of the world, including the majority of the champions.

Efren is better because he dominated lots of different pool games: 8 ball, 9 ball, 10 ball, one pocket, carom... while Strickland was mainly a 9 ball player only.

Thank you for telling me about that. I'm not a player, just a fan and I love to watch videos of Efren playing. In one of them that I watched, the commentator said that Earl was in the audience and that he always came to watch Efren play when he could.

I don't know, Earl is kind of childish and petty at times, claiming a photo flash from the audience made him miss a shot, and or breaking pool ques on the table after a bad shot, that and jumping on the table after a win. Adrenaline I guess.

To be fair, these are the reasons Strickland is better than Reyes. 1. 5 U.S Opens for Earl, 1 U.S Open for Efren. 2. 3- 9 Ball World Championships for Earl, 1 for Efren. 3. In their primes, Earl shot at a higher percentage then Efren. At one time, Earl carried an incredible .975 average. 5. Earl won more tournaments than Efren. 6. Although Efren held a slight edge over Earl in head to head matches, Earl won way more games in those head to head matches. This means than when Efren beat Strickland, the match was really close, when Earl won the match, he beat Efren by a wide margin. Which leads to 7. Earl was a much better breaker. Now to be fair to Reyes, the reasons Reyes is better than Strickland. 1. Reyes did not come to U.S till 1985 when he was 31!!! Just think if he had come to U.S ten years earlier. 2. Efren was a better money player than a tournament player and yet still won as a tournament player. While Earl was a great money player, he quit playing the action scene years ago. Efren never quit. 3. Earl only won 9 Ball tournaments, Reyes won in rotation, one pocket, 8 ball, balk line, straight pool... although he never won a snooker tournament, it is rumored that one night, he more than held his own against White, Hendry and O Sullivan in straight up $$$ snooker matches.

I love earl, his matches were always as exciting to watch as efren. Yes, he won more tournaments than efren... because, he is from US... Earl has more opportunities to join big tournaments than efren who is from the Philippines, and efren only started to join international tournament when he is past 30... obviously, we haven't seen a big part of his prime years...

@Cosme Fulanito Agreed. Here are the similarities. 1. Both heavily relied on a stroke that put tons of spin on the q. 2. Both of their pattern plays were vastly different, more creative than the rest of the players. 3. Both of their respective careers lasted well, until recently. Earl, at over 60 yrs old was selected to last year's Mosconi Cup and didn't play bad. Efren, nearing 70!!!, in this year's DCC came in 3rd in the 1 Pocket division. 4. They both changed the game tons. Earl's power break and run game was so strong, to be fair to the others, they changed the rules of the break. Efren, pretty much invented jump cues even though he never used one let alone jumped the ball. Even though they changed the rules to put both of 'em at a disadvantage, the two of 'em STILL kicked rear ends.

Efren actually won a snooker event. It was on South East Asian Games. PHI won the gold. He never plays snooker because its not a thing in ph back in the day but our gov made him learn snooker and play it on SEA Games. Though maybe he played against not so good players but still, that's a great achievement considering he's not a legit snooker player.

The reasons you presented are not enough to justify, why, Efren is better than Earl. Actually, there are more factors than what mentioned. Efren had been champion in 8 balls, one pocket, one cushion straight pool, American rotation and etcetera. Other great players has only one or two expertise in their arsenal. Efren is an all-around billiard player. These are the reasons, Efren is the GOAT....
