    Thank you. Venlafaxine took away chronic emotional agony. I got off it once before, against medical advice. I just got back on it almost a year ago, and it's been a huge relief. I'm also running again, which I love. I think exercise is crucial to mental health, whether we take medication or not. I think we metabolize Effexor and anything else if we're consistent with cardiovascular exercise, the more the better. I need hours per day to feel ok; I'm fortunate to have an active job and the ability to bike-commute.

    My ENT prescribed Venlafaxine (ER 37.5mg) for my Vestibular Neuritis. He said it would take 2 weeks and my vertigo would be gone. I took one pill and my vertigo was 80% gone in 2 hours. Hey great... At 4am I woke up with a blinding headache. Then I remembered reading watch your blood pressure if you take this. So I take my blood pressure....197/121. Off to the ER I go. The ER Dr. gave me 0.1mg of Clonidine and in one hour my blood pressure was 117/74. If I have to chose between Vertigo and a Stroke I think I'll go with the Vertigo.

    I have been on it for more than 30 years and the withdrawals are more than tough. I have tried numerous times to taper off but the the dizziness, swooshing , when I turn my eyes and head lasted for weeks and I just gave up and went back on a maintenance dose. I am trying again right now. Wish me luck, had I known it was going to be like this I wouldn’t have started it

    I was on Side-Effexor. I found I was getting brain zaps without changing the dose. . (It was recently suggested to me that may have been caused by a change in the time of day I took it.) Fortunately I understood the tapering down idea. I couldn't get into the doctor for a week or two, so I started removing a few spanules a day from the capsule. This seemed to work well.

    Yes! Brain zaps happen if you miss a dose or are trying to taper. I have tried to come off a 75 mg dose, slowly tapering, many times. I finally gave up.

    Thank you for sharing about your experience. I hope at this time the withdraws have subsided. I made an SSRI mini series on my channel and withdraw is discussed in one of the series videos. There are a couple of options you could ask your own provider about if you still are experiencing withdraw symptoms. I hope this helps and please share the withdraw video with anyone you think might benefit from it.

    Did that feeling last all day throughout those 3 weeks? I have seizures occasionally and was recently prescribed this. I felt like I was about to have a seizure, and then not going into it, on a different medication in the past; so I'm hoping that this one won't be so bad and/ or won't induce my usual seizures more frequently. I hope all of the side effects have worn off for you.

    I've been on Effexor XR (Venlafaxine) - 75 mg. - for about 7 or 8 years now and I'm always made aware when I'm due another dose because my brain starts "zitzing" (as I call it). (I'm now suffering from severe shaking of my upper body, arms and hands and I'm wondering whether to have my doctor up the dose to 150 mg. or to wean myself off the medication). I don't know if the shaking is being caused by the Venlafaxine or not but it's driving me crazy!! By coincidence, my brain is "zitzing" right now!

    I am on year 4 of terrible depressive agitation after tapering from this drug. Was fine before taking the drug, just going through a breakup, tapered after 6 years. Then it started. Very strange and unnatural feeling. "Like akathisia, the discomfort is extreme and impairing. In fact, the SSRI toxicity related symptoms appear much more uncomfortable than even serious anxiety or depression unrelated to SSRIs. Some describe it as anxiety and some as depression, but typically it has a fairly abrupt onset and is worse than anything previously experienced. The patients seem to be unable to describe it except to say that it is extremely uncomfortable - crawling out of my skin. My suspicion is that patients are reluctant to talk about how they feel because they are having suicidal thoughts and fear the possibility of involuntary hospitalization. Akathisia is probably the best term currently in use to describe the syndrome of late onset and persistent withdrawal symptoms, but these symptoms need to be better categorized, studied, and described. Particularly after long-term use, the resulting akathisia can be severe and disabling. It is excruciating, and patients are so visibly anguished. Sometimes reinstatement or trying other medications helps a lot, and sometimes any medication seems to make things incrementally worse." Dr Stuart Shipko - www.madinamerica.com/2020/08/ssri-withdrawal-elephant/

    Thank you, I appreciate people talking about the horrors of this medication. I’m so sorry you are still experiencing these terrible withdrawal symptoms. If I knew what was going to happen I wouldn’t have started taking it, I was a child. I’ve been on it for close to 9 years now and need to start tapering off because I can’t take it anymore. My first taper by my doctor was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. It was the first time I felt like I was truly losing my mind. Going down so much slower this time but, that means it going to take 2+ years to fully be off…. This drug is a straight up drug, my body NEEDS it and will make my life a living hell for it. Im so scared that the brain zaps will come back… I feel like a heroine addict sometimes, that it’s the only thing that cures the awful withdrawals. I hope you are doing well, this drug is not okay.

    You have akathisia. Agitated depression is practically code for akathisia and medication harm. I’m so sorry. Find Dr. Josef Witt-Doerring Psychiatry or Find Nicole Lamberson Pa. Both have done videos with Shipko. Find the Akathisia Alliance for Better Education. I’m there. Jill Nickens and Russel Baker head it. There’s MISSD as well. Again, I’m so sorry. I’ve suffered for several decades. Akathisia is like tinnitus. The more it comes back, the harder it is to make it go away. The problem as you saw is cumulative usage makes tardive akathisia rather common. When it happens tardive, it’s hard to make it go away.

    I was just recently prescribed this medication and after hearing about the potential side effects I became very discouraged with this medication and my current psychiatrist. Why would I want to take something that has rough withdrawal and has the potential to create electrical zaps in your brain? That sounds almost just as bad as depression……. Smh I am losing confidence in being able to treat my depression and that is very frustrating. Thank you for making this video. My psychiatrist didn’t mention any of these potential side effects and only said that I might become nauseas. It’s fair to say he just lost a patient.

    The comments here are enough for me to decide I'm not putting myself through that madness. Is this medication really worth it?? 🤷‍♂️ I tried sertraline the other week just 1 tablet and my anxiety was worse and felt like i was getting a cold. My friend who was on it for a week tells me he wanted to sleep all the time and made his anxiety worse and didnt want to leave the house! So my doctors put me on this venlafaxine and on the fence about it. Crazy! For now im relying on exercise, breathing exercises, meditation, healthy eating. It works but my problem is coming off alcohol and has left me feeling negative, thoughts racing you name it. Will this medication really help or make me worse. 🤷‍♂️.

    I find it interesting that the regular side effects almost exactly mimic the withdrawal symptoms. 😐 I’ve been on 75mg for about a year and all of a sudden, the last three days have felt like all the side effects hit me at once. But I’m also having withdrawal symptoms while I’m still taking it. I had an on call drop my dose from 75mg to 37.5. I’m tapering off and it’s literally some the worst feelings I’ve ever felt. This is NOT Ok.

    I haven't started on this yet, how long can you take it before it causes withdrawal symptoms? I'm taking Trazodone for anxiety now, an SARI. It works, more or less. I take 50 mgs every 4 hours, along with a Valerian root capsule or two. Lately I have also been supplementing with Kratom as well which really helps. Because this is what I have to look forward to for the rest of my short life (I'm 72 yoa), I have become more and more depressed. All of my friends are dead and gone, and I just don't relate to the world around me anymore. Doesn't engage my interest at all. I can't stand the idea of taking this for a month or two, to no good effect, and then having to go through a hideous withdrawal. I would rather die and move on to the next thing.

  • @Batya-Grace

    @Batya-Grace

    Absolutely not! I say that lovingly, yet firmly. You will experience severe withdrawal symptoms, yes, even at that low-dose. Trust me, you try quitting cold turkey to test it if you are curious, and you will see what I mean. Your brain will feel like it’s being electrocuted. A lot of people will open the capsule and wean themselves by removing a few beads per week, some do it differently. For some, the side effect is so bad that they can only remove one bead per weak, but truthfully, it really is that serious. I am actually going to be trying Effexor again after having not tried it in a long time. I know the adverse side effects of weaning off, but my anxiety is pretty high right now, so I want to go back on it. At least I know how to wean myself off. As a sidenote, if it’s doing its job, do you think you really should remove it? If you don’t have other ways to deal with your anxiety, or have a strong faith /support system of sorts, then I would not remove it yet.

    Hey Ian, For a lot of people, side effects go away completely after a week or two of being on the medication. Also, whenever my patients feel tired from a medication, I always make sure they are taking it at bedtime. Oftentimes, this can help with the daytime fatigue component if it is medication related. Make sure to talk to your doctor about potential strategies if symptoms persist! Dr. Aly P.S. Hey! Thanks for taking the time to check out this video and for the great question! So Effexor XR and Strattera are in two different medication classes. I have been slowly weaning off of this medication since 10/21. I was on 150mg for 23 years. Gave me hypertension and high cholesterol. I’m done with it. Doctors can’t help you. A 50% wean is too much and will cause terrible side effects. I break open the capsules. Count the beads. Figure out how many beads per mg. Was doing 10mg decrease every two week and I started to have protracted withdrawal symptoms badly. Now weaning 5mg/month. No side effects. Now on 50mg and so grateful. Women are over medicated in this country. It’s a crime. And No informed consent. I needed help with my five children and to get out of an abusive marriage at the time. Not to be drugged. Very good documentary on PBS called “Medicating Normal”. Highly informative, shocking to see the evolution of psychiatric drugs. I’m in school to become a nurse practitioner. I need to know this.

A different option to try would be a hyperbolic dose reduction, which is highlighted in this video.... kzread.info/dash/bejne/hqBk19Nxe5SciKg.html It's really disheartening (and somewhat reckless) to see someone tell another person that "doctors can't help you".... especially when it is someone who is in the health care field and is trying to become a nurse practitioner. It doesn't JUST increase serotonin in certain parts of the brain. It increase serotonin everywhere. Serotonin regulates your gut, sexual performance and much more. Thats how you get all the side effects. Yes maybe a little extra serotonin in you brain is a good thing but extra serotonin everywhere else leads to issues. And no, you don't have a chemical imbalance, that has been disproven, but you will have one after taking any SSRI/SNRI. It could be a good thing for you or it could be a bad thing.
