yes. it's just a small piece of wood or metal. you can get a 4 pack on amazon for 10 bucks. search for "Glowiny Kubaton Keychain"

Definitely, kubotan works. I would make the application simple. It works it's because of simple techniques. If it takes more than two moves, you're in a fight rather than SD. Most practitioners mix their teaching of SD with fighting techniques. Unfortunately, they are far from similar.
