The kubotan is a 5.5 inch self-defense keychain weapon developed in the late 60’s. It is usually made of high-impact plastic or aluminum. The best way to use the kubaton if being attacked is holding it like an ice-pick and striking in a hammer-like motion. There are many different ways to use the kubaton in a self-defense situation. In this video Kevin explains how to use it in a couple different scenarios.
Kevin Kinnon has been a fire Captain & Paramedic for over 33 years, retiring in 2011. During his fire fighting career he went through the ranks as a Fire Fighter, Fire Fighter/Paramedic, and lastly Fire Captain of the Culver City Fire Department in California. He is also a EMT-1 Program Director, State level fire instructor on Weapons of Mass Destruction, FEMA life time instructor, and Hazardous Materials Coordinator. Kevin has devoted a large part of his life to martial arts and has earned a black belt in Yoshukai karate. He now teaches self-defense classes, primarily for women, and is the owner of “City Survival Self Defense” which has been operating for over 25 years.

A friend was being sort of a jerk when I talked a little bit about the kubaton to a small group of five on a hike. The kubaton was caught underneath my pack (I was with FRIENDS!) and he decided to grab my forearm and twist while I struggled with the keychain trapped under the belt. Then he mocked me while I struggled to get in position to use it, and grabbed at my hand to take it from me. I was able to twist it away from him , wrap it behind his ulna at the wrist and he dropped my arm instantly. Then I stepped forward in a mock stab to his shoulder and he backed away about three feet. I then turned to his buddy who thought mocking women's self defense all very funny, but wiped the grin off his face and jumped back when I took just a half step in his direction. The point of the story is you can use the kubaton BADLY and still get the job done.
