Like.....what was the point of that? What was the point of ruining BATMAN? Why couldn't they just have Kevin Conroy's Batsie BE the Paragon of Courage? What was the point of destroying his character to shill Batwoman, other than to piss on the hopes and dreams of Bat-fans everywhere?

The thing I find so fascinating about Batwoman is how much work seems to go into making the show _worse_ than what you’d expect if they simply didn’t care about good writing. So in this episode of STORYTELLING 101, we’re going to look at the sad, sad fate of Batman. THE SETUP: Batwoman and Co have gone to an alternate Earth to collect Batman because he’s one of the handful of individuals absolutely necessary for saving the multiverse. However, it’s a bait-and-switch: it turns out that the wording of their prophecy-thing meant that _Kate_ is the Bat-person they needed, not Bruce. THE GOAL: Kate’s importance is enforced by _multiversal_ _space_ _prophecy_ to make up for how awful the writing has been for actually making her important. In classic Mary Sue-fashion, a famous character we’re familiar with will be used to flatter the Mary Sue and impress upon her that she’s totes as important as the writers are convinced she is. With me so far? Alright, let’s split the ways this could be done into three categories. I’ll call them ‘Hack,’ ‘Lazy Hack,’ and ‘Batwoman Writer.’ THE HACK APPROACH: They meet a basically-normal Batman, and he agrees to help them. Suddenly, Wayne Manor is attacked, and he teams up with Batwoman and Co to fight off the dementors/parademons/whatever. He does well in the fight, though we get at least one or two instances where Batwoman saves or at least covers him, and he compliments her fighting ability (and, if she returns the compliment, it’ll be something backhanded like ‘You’re not so bad yourself, old man’). Unfortunately, either at the end of the fight or in a subsequent fight, Batman is mortally injured. Bonus points if he is mortally wounded while defending Batwoman. Batwoman is by his side as he lies dying, and she says something about how they need him to save the multiverse…only for him to say that _she_ can totes fill in for him, because she's just as good/even better at Batpersoning than him. THE LAZY HACK APPROACH: They meet an older Batman who has quit crimefighting, and he does not want to help them. We find out that he quit being Batman after the Batwoman of his universe died, because apparently she’s _so_ _important_ that her death would make Batman hang up his cowl even if he had nothing to do with her death personally (meanwhile, all the dead Robins from over the years are spinning in their graves). Kate tries to convince him to come out of retirement, but suddenly a dementor/parademon/whatever jumps out of the shadows and mortally wounds him. There’s a quick fight, Batwoman shows off, and Bruce spends the whole time bleeding to death. Then, as he lies dying, he says that _she_ can take his place, she’s the hero that Gotham deserves, etc. Then he dies, and we’re supposed to think Batwoman is super important because the writers made Batman say that she is. There’s less fighting to choreograph and film, and Batman is given significantly less dignity for the sake of playing up Batwoman’s importance. THE BATWOMAN APPROACH: Holy _shit_ Batman is a crippled serial killer in a robot suit?! He murdered his Earth’s Superman?!? And all of this happened because Kate got herself killed as Batwoman? And then Kate affirms her multiversal significance as Batman dies humiliated, despised, and morally bankrupt? Imagine dignity as a commodity, and let’s be generous by saying that Batman and Batwoman start this episode with 50 Dignities each. The events of this crossover event represent an extra 100 Dignities, and as writer you can hand them out to Batman and Batwoman however you see fit. The ‘Hack’ approach is like giving Batwoman 80 of those Dignities and Batman 20. You would be showing blatant favoritism towards Batwoman, but at least you paid _some_ respect for Batman before declaring that Batwoman was more important than him on a _multiversal_ _scale_ . The ‘Lazy Hack’ approach is like giving all 100 Dignities to Batwoman and nothing to Batman. After all, you just want to make Batwoman look good. Why waste any of the limelight on Batman? Isn’t it enough that he was there at all? But the ‘Batwoman’ approach? Give all 100 of those Dignities to Batwoman, and then have her drain the 50 that Batman had by default like the parasite she is. In the end, you have actively worked to ensure that Batman leaves the show with no Dignity whatsoever, and Batwoman leaves bloated by what you unfairly rationed her _and_ what you stole from Batman. This is the Mary Sue at its worst. The universe is already being written to bend around them, and the writers rely on character-assassination to ensure that nobody can ever get a single ray of their precious Sue’s limelight. Or should I say… (puts on sunglasses) …I single _Rey_ of the limelight. YYYEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH

10:10 Well, there's yet another iconic part of DC history being hideously exploited for this awful, awful series. For those of you that aren't as familiar with the comics, that shot of Superman dead in rubble, Lois crying over him, and the torn cape hanging nearby is -taken- stolen from 'The Death of Superman' from the 90s. It was the end of a long battle involving virtually the entire Justice League trying (and failing) to stop the newly-arrived Doomsday. Superman was their last, best chance of stopping him, and even then everyone was shocked to see just how much damage Doomsday was inflicting on him in the process. And, in the end, Superman stopped him...but died in the process, shocking the world. What followed was a very interesting look into how the world reacted to Superman's death, which characters were affected the most personally by his loss, and who tried to fill the void that he left behind. It was a story that involved superpowers and regular humans in nearly equal measures, and it's got a number of animated films based on it (all of which are galactically superior to this heap of trash). But to use that image here, for this? What? How? Are we supposed to believe that Jake Luthor put Superman and the surrounding area in the same shape that they were in after Superman hit Doomsday with a high-orbit PILEDRIVER? In the next scene, he just pulls out a box with a finger-sized piece of kryptonite. What the hell happened differently here?
