    Batman could operate without the Batsignal. But Batwoman apparently can't. She quite literally needs a man to tell her what to do!

    It's very petty of her to not do batwoman stuff without the batsignal. But Batwahman needs the validation the batsignal gives her. It's not there to let her know to get out of the batcave and fight criminals, it's there for special circumstances.

    “Commissioner, are you refusing to turn the Batsymbol on because Batwoman is a Lesbian?” “I...j...w...huh?! No ma’am, we aren’t letting her help because she’s under investigation for being a part of the Wonderland Gang. On several occasions, she has been spotted near where known criminal Alice has escaped and our only conclusion can be that she is letting her escape because they’re working together. We can’t think of a single other logical reason why that would be the case. Furthermore, she has been of little to no help to Gotham jeopardising our investigations and evidently acting out of personal interest to appear good over that of helping the city. We looked the other way for Batman because he helped us, we don’t for this dangerous narcissist. And as for you implication that I won’t let her help because she’s a Lesbian, why would I jeopardise my son’s life like that? Do you really think my pride would outweigh that? If I did hate her, wouldn’t sending her into danger be my first resort, not my last? Jeez, the audacity of you people! I’m a serious and committed Police Officer and unlike everyone else, that doesn’t matter to me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go save my son.”

    Plus, to the best of my knowledge the police haven't been using the batsignal at all since the shutdown ceremony in the first episode. The only time I remember it being lit was when it teleported to another rooftop so Alice could play with it. It's like people saw that the commissioner wasn't treating Batwoman any different now that everyone knows she's a lesbian compared to when nobody knew her orientation, so they assumed he was a bigot.

    @@Serahpin Redheaded characters in general tend to get the shaft. Them being blackwashed is just a small subset of cases; more often than not, they'll just be made dark-haired. For example, of the five male redhead superheroes in comics (Wally West aka Kid Flash, Matt Murdock aka Daredevil, Roy Harper aka Red Arrow, Banshee, and Scott Lang aka Ant-Man), only Banshee was actually kept a redhead, and not only does he get killed off-screen after only one film, I suspect that the only reason he was kept a redhead was because he's Irish. Though, credit where credit is due, they did try to dye Charlie Cox's hair red to match how Matt Murdock looks in the comics, but none of the dyes would work, so they settled on giving him auburn tints.

    @@Mythonaut Funny enough, Triss is only a redhead in the games. In the books, she has chestnut hair, which means she should look more like Trisha Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist than how she looks in the show. I love how the citizens are not angry at Batwoman for choosing not to come out and protect the city because the police force doesn't put up the Batsignal. Batman doesn't depend on the Batsignal, he patrols the streets on his own. Gordon uses the signal to either send a message to Batman or to the criminals that Batman is coming.

  • @calemr

    Every episode has at least 1 moment where I imagine Alfred being just... Deeply, deeply disappointed. "They won't turn on the batsignal!" "Master Bruce often solved cases before the Police were aware they even existed. He didn't care how the people viewed him, he just did the work." And then when she jumps down from the building in front of the crowd, in the earpiece of the batsuit "When you're quite done with the theatrics, if we could get back to stopping Alice? I often worried for Master Bruce's obsession, but your track record has convinced me it was most definitely for the better..."

    @Templar Knight The bat signal was basically just for notifying batman when the police specifically needs help or notice something he didnt. Otherwise yeah he does his own patrols occasionally and either catches news of bad guy stuff from radio or eyewitness. Never really depended on the bat signal. This makes her even worse that she depended on a fucking light to even get permission to fight.

    Also we know that the DCEU is part of the CW multiverse thanks to the Flash cameo on Crisis on Infinite Earths, alongside all other DC properties, so in a multiverse filled with DC heroes in real life the MCU still is successful in depicting super heroes larger than life. Maybe Batman decided to create the Justice League after seeing how successful the Avengers movies were.

Odds are Batwoman and the Police would still be doing separate investigations (since the Batcave has superior-but-secret) tech, so the Police being cooperative is more a publicity/morale thing than a practicality, at least on the Bat end. Forget why they won't turn it on for a second, that literally shouldn't be impacting your capability to find the hostages.

    Killing off a pet is perhaps the laziest writing trick in the book. It doesn’t take any effort to get your audience to care about a small, defenseless animal, because people tend to sympathize with them by default. Not gonna claim always, but 9 times out of 10 when this trick is employed, it’s by hack writers that need to extract *F E E L S* from their audience somehow, but don’t have the talent to actually make them care about their human characters. Very rarely does it add anything to the story.

    I can believe the string is super strong. You can get incredibly strong fishing line. Even a braided fishing line (the one shown is monofilament, which is much thicker than braided, but we'll ignore that for now) would be thicker than what is shown, but I am willing to accept that a string can be strong enough to do what she does with it. What I can't accept is her lasso with the fishing line. You cannot throw fishing line like she does in the show. To throw a string type thing like she does, it needs some weight to it. Throwing fishing line is like throwing a feather. It just stops mid air and floats down. That's why you need a fishing lure to cast a fishing pole. The line itself doesn't weigh enough to go anywhere on its own.

    So it can kill people it if gets around their neck. The show just skipped the logic of the "gets around their neck" part given that scene's circumstances. Also why would they let Alice hold the book while evidently paying little enough attention to see her take the fishing line out of the spine for her to use in the escape? Isn't hiding contraband inside something like a book one of the most generic/memetic ways to smuggle things past Police, i.e. the first thing anyone keeping a prisoner would confiscate or at least check? They didn't find the fishing line to be a concern in the spine considering that's not usually what they bind a book with? Or that Alice who normally is all "I'm quirky and random psycho" was so insistent on having this book in her hands? Or are you telling me Alice carries this book with her everywhere (including to the school where she sent a Bomb threat), got into the scuffle with Kate, and then had time to take the Fishing line out of the book between Kate tying her wrist (the last time we see her on screen after she has any reason to think she'll be arresed) but before she was put in cuffs (and thus being watched by the Crows)? And this is a minor detail, but I'm not clear if the flashbacks are literally what she describes to Sophie, or shown for the audience while she tells a trimmed down/more manipulative version. I bring this up because I'm not clear if she included the part about making the skin faces (which would immediately support Mary's story and prove Jacob's innocence if the paper trail didn't already) or repairing the Alice-in-Wonderland book with fishing line (i.e. that she could have the line at hand to attempt violence if she has that same book). Neither of these are plot holes if it's the latter scenario and thus Sophie wouldn't know, but if this info DID come up then it does become questionable.

    When the last episode ended with an alternate Beth appearing in the new Earth, I wasn’t sure where they were going to take this surprising turn of events…but I was pretty sure it would be stupid. I was right. Welcome to STORYTELLING 101 #8: Introducing a dimensional/Crisis-event refugee. THE SETUP: For ‘fucked if I know’ reasons, AltBeth (who for simplicity I’ll just call Beth since the other is just Alice now) appeared on the new Earth. In the last episode, she just kinda…appeared, I guess, without knowing that this was a newly formed Earth made of a bunch of -CW- -shows- separate ones, and the problems start before she even appeared onscreen. However, this premise has a chance to make a halfway-decent episode with lots of good character interaction and a chance for Beth’s actress to really show her acting chops. In the hands of a hypothetical HACK or even a LAZY HACK, that might have happened. Thank goodness the BATWOMAN WRITER saved us from a potentially interesting episode. But regardless, this is basically Beth’s first time being ‘Beth’ on this show instead of Alice, so please join me in eulogizing what potential this episode had. THE HACK: This will epitomize the nature of ‘The Hack,’ because I will be doing all that I can to rip off something great in the service of something aggressively mediocre. But, as this is the HACK and not the LAZY HACK, I will put in the work to capitalize on the creativity of others. In the ‘Astro City’ comic line (which, to generalize, is fairly similar to the DC/Marvel Earths), there is a series about a normal civilian man who founded a support group for people affected by the collateral of superhero/supervillain fights after having lost his wife to one…but here’s the twist: he didn’t lose his wife to one……except he _did_ . Long story short, his wife ‘died’ during a fight between the Astro City equivalent of the Justice League and a time-traveling supervillain. Defeating him meant that there were ripples as time ‘corrected’ itself, and suddenly this man found that he had never married, yet constantly and persistently dreamed of a woman who no longer existed. He essentially remembers both timelines while living in only one of them, and he chose to create a support group named after the wife who was, for all intents and purposes, retconned out of existence. It’s a phenomenally heartbreaking _and_ heartwarming_ story…and that’s why THE HACK is going to _rip_ _it_ _the_ _hell_ _off_ , albeit with some tweaks to make it work here. We’re starting with Beth in the Wayne building looking for Kate, and there’s a bunch of problems I’ll try to go over later, but until then…let’s start things off in the night that Mary (ha! I remembered stepsister’s name!) saw her going into Gotham University. Maybe she wanders in, finds that her ‘apartment’ is a dormitory now, and there’s some kind of reality-flicker as she sees her own Earth as well as this one. From there, as she realizes that -SWAT- the Crows are storming the building, she could flee the dorm using the later-established survival skills, but ultimately end up in an alley or something, where the adrenaline fades and she falls asleep. The next morning, she wakes up, trying to shake the last night’s events off as some kind of misunderstanding, and asks one of the nearby homeless about some stuff related to the state of Gotham. She could learn here about Alice, Jacob’s incarceration, etc. Oh! And also, we should make a point that Beth styles herself differently than Alice. Maybe she keeps her hair a bit shorter, pulls it back in a ponytail, and applies makeup less. Point is, make it something other than ‘Alice, except her hair is a different color.’ I might be a Hack, but I don’t want to treat my audience as if they’re _complete_ idiots. We would keep to a lot from Beth’s perspective. Maybe throw in some reality-flickers that show us the images of ‘reality’ that she knows that only get described in the episode. Some stuff like ‘Jacob still being Commander Kane’ and ‘growing up with Kate’ and ‘Kate being actually likable.’ It’d help drive home how Beth’s native Earth is a paradise compared to this one, and that if it is truly gone than this is nothing short of hell for her. Maybe also show the glimpses of her Earth when she’s asleep/unconscious, too, to keep them drip-fed to the audience. This way, Beth’s decision to default to the playground she and Kate remembered might have some significance. We could see her put together the details of the dystopian hell that is this Earth, trace it back to her ‘death’ on the bridge, and then…hell, wouldn’t it be more effective if she went to the playground half-expecting that Kate would find and kill her? As far as Beth knows, the local equivalent of her is a sadistic serial killer, and the local equivalent of Kate publicly has _every_ _reason_ to have run out of mercy. That would be a phenomenal place to end the episode, too. Kate would find Beth at the playground, only to see that not only does Beth half-expect this version of her sister to kill her, but on some level she _wants_ that. After an episode of piecing together what a nightmare this version of Earth is, maybe Beth thinks that the best thing to do is ‘wake up’ from it all. And maybe make Kate’s realization of Beth’s origin the source of a dilemma. As much as she would probably want Beth to represent a chance at having her sister back, wouldn’t it stand to reason that it would require another Earth to _lose_ her? If nothing else, this would be the focus of…

  • @electricbayonet2

    @electricbayonet2

    4 жыл бұрын

    THE LAZY HACK: Fittingly, this is a lazier version of the scenario described above. Beth would still have her breakdown regarding the dystopian nightmare that is this Earth, except we wouldn’t bother with stuff like flashbacks/flickers to her native Earth, and ultimately we’d be focusing a lot more on Kate. But, as I said, the focus of this would be the dilemma of Beth from Kate’s perspective. After Crisis on Infinite Tisms, Kate knows _a_ _bunch_ of people with experience in cross-dimensional travel. So…why not have her contact them? Or at least have a throwaway line where she tells Luke to contact them? It would be a chance to A) show Kate actually using the resources of the new -Justice- -League- -Super- -Friends- Equity Fellows and B) give us a reason why Kate doesn’t, y’know, try and get Beth home, because in this scenario (and the HACK’s scenario) we’d be told that…I dunno, the Flash stuck his dick in the -Cosmic- -Treadmill- Techno Stairmaster, and it told him that Beth’s world was destroyed and she only arrived now because of Quantum McQuantumface. But for the love of all that’s good, either of these would be better than what we got with… THE BATWOMAN WRITER: This episode is just _filled_ with ‘Fuck you, don’t think about it’ moments. Beth arrived on this Earth when the sun was down, found that she no longer had a place to live, and then showed up at Wayne Enterprises to nonchalantly wish Kate a happy birthday? Fuck you, don’t think about it. Beth apparently just got back from “a semester abroad,” but as established has no place to live, so I guess the contents of her purse (re: a driver’s license, a 300-page paper, and a can of mace) are all she had since getting off the plane? Fuck you, don’t think about it. Beth is from an Earth where things are _objectively_ _better_ , but she’s just kinda sad offscreen and then just vaguely nostalgic for the home she may never see ever again? Fuck you, don’t think about it. Kate has Supergirl, Flash, and the Legends on her speed dial, and spends exactly ‘zero’ time trying to see if they had a means of getting Beth home, or even just establishing whether she had a home to go back to? Fuck you, don’t think about it. Really, that last point is the big thing for me on this episode. It’d be one thing if we could go back to Episodes 1 through 8 where we only got references to the fact that actual superheroes exist as a resolution to any number of our problems, but…for fuck’s sake, the last episode _did_ have Kate contact Supergirl, except she did it to put out a press release to make sure the public didn’t think Batwoman was a filthy hetero. Let me repeat that: the first and thus far _only_ time that Kate has called a fellow Justice League member was to scream ‘Lookit me Imma lesbonio!’ at the general public…but she won’t do the same to potentially get her dimensionally-displaced sister home. And as if the writers said ‘You thought the physics of the train last episode were stupid? Hold my tism, watch this!’ we get Kate getting fucking _obliterated_ on her bike, and just being…fine. Oh, right, and the police commissioner hates lesbians, apparently. That’s why he didn’t use the Batsignal that was deliberately shut down in the first episode (and then not used at all by the GCPD since then, either). He hates lesbians so much he’d rather let his son (and the mayor’s son) get murdered by a serial killer than risk letting some filthy homo rescue him. That was important enough that we needed a _specific_ _scene_ and multiple additional lines to establish. They even have the mayor’s son highlight how little sense it makes to assume that the commissioner isn’t using the Batsignal because of how much he hates gays. But the really bizarre thing about that entire subplot? I think the writers thought it was patching a perceived plothole. I think someone said ‘Hey, if Kate gets captured, too, then how do we justify to the public why Batwoman didn’t show up to save them?’ and that this non-issue needed to be addressed. So to do it…they made the police commissioner _cartoonishly_ homophobic, and everyone assumed _that_ was the reason Batwoman didn’t show up to help. And not only that, but they treat this as having been completely reasonable on Batwoman’s part! When the GCPD finally caves and turns the Batsignal on (after the hostage crisis is over), the throngs of Batwoman fans scream and cheer as the lady herself swoops down to bask in their adoration. Oh, right. And that scene I just described? It happened directly after Sophie and Kate were at Crows HQ, watching the protests. So I guess Kate ‘How did Bruce manage to keep this a secret’ Kane excused herself, ran across town to Wayne Enterprises, put on the batsuit, and then ran to the protest to make a very public and _televised_ appearance. But hey, the episode (and series) isn’t _all_ bad. After all, I got to mention and recommend ‘Astro City’ to anyone who reads this. That’s it. See y’all next time for STORYTELLING 101 #9, which will probably be about the recurring ‘You have Supergirl/Flash/the Benevolence Pals on speed dial. Why do you never ask for help?’ question, because _wow_ does it get bad.

    Alice has invisibility. Batwoman can defy physics and the limitations of human anatomy. Also, when doing a high risk prisoner transfer you have two guards escort the prisoner who will be in ankle shackles and wrist restrictions at her waist side, there will be a lead guard armed with a shotgun and a follow officer also armed with a shotgun. The vehicle will have a driver and a second guard riding shotgun. This will be done during the day time, never at night. The writing for this show should be used in universities to illustrate what not to do, but then considering the modern university politics this writing is probably considered high art. Also, Batwoman has several times committed the crime of accomplice after the fact. Batwoman can and should be charged with murder in the first degreee, because she knows Alice has murdered and will likely do so again she is in a state of "malice aforethought". She knows Alice will likely kill but lets her go anyways because reasons.

    6:46 -- _"Theoretical Extragalactic Astrophysics and Cosmology"_ My sister has degrees in Physics and Astrophysics. So I know that THAT'S NOT A THING. - If you're studying astrophysics, that's more of a conceptual subject that's not limited by location -- so you wouldn't just limit yourself to either intragalactic or extragalactic observations. If you're studying the behavior of pulsars or something, it's not like you'd find a pulsar and then go, _"nope, this one's too close, it's still inside the galactic rim, we can't look at it."_ That's retarded. If you're just interested in the (astro)physics of certain phenomena, you'd study them wherever they are. It's not like mass or gravity or light works differently outside of our galaxy than it does in it. - Since so much of our understanding of cosmology (the study of the origin of the universe) is theoretical anyway, with a lot of it being basically untestable -- why would a textbook bother to specify that it covers "theoretical" astrophysics and cosmology? We know, it's theoretical. We weren't _at_ the Big Bang. - Why would a textbook even combine "Astrophysics and Cosmology" in its title? If it was trying to explain the physics of cosmology, the book's subject would just be referred to as "Cosmology." Like how a business textbook wouldn't say it covers "Money and Economics." Money's part of economics, like astrophysics are part of cosmology.

    14:55 KK's left leg would be absolutely crushed by the impact with that car. Then her right leg would be skinned to the bone from the friction with the road surface as the bike gets dragged. The shock of impact would do serious damage to her neck and spine and she would almost certainly strike her head (through the helmet) to the road. If she lived, she would probably lose her left leg and possibly have major reconstructive surgery of the right, if they could save it. KK would likely become a double amputee. I've been riding motobikes for years and there's no way you'd survive a crash like that without serious injuries. Some of my friends and family have had serious accidents and to see these show runniers portraying this as they do is justing f'ing insulting. This scene is such BS.

  • @papershadow

    @papershadow

    To be "fair" (question mark) about the right leg, the shot seems to be going for the idea that Kate got flung off her bike immediately rather than dragged. So she just goes into a tumble with the barely-intact left leg (or it was torn off by the force flinging her) on top of rolling several miles an hour on every other bone in her body. I genuinely don't know which result is more likely and more insulting, whether for an actual crash of that magnitude or just for what the show is suggesting.

Batwoman on the other hand is a classic villain archetype.. she's out for her own glory and fame.. she wants recognition for all that she does... she doesn't care about the greater good.. but only good in relation to herself..... she isn't particularly intelligent or self determined... she doesn't have a strong code or set of morals... she's the ideal person to be pushed... by circumstances to become the villain.

But then again, when they wrote this episode they clearly had no idea how the multiverse worked. You can tell by the "put all the universes in a blender" line, which is absolutely not what happened. What happened was everything was destroyed and you built it all up from scratch by thinking *real* hard and using the power of friendship.

I must say I am beginning to find it a personal insult to my intelligence that this show, and others potentially, are attempting to frame homophobes as so irrational they would let their children die before allowing a gay person to help them. Homophobes exist, racists exist, people you dislike exist. By painting these people as cartoonishly retarded they are not presenting these worldviews in good faith. Very soon people are going to wonder why these people are being presented so unfairly. And because the left have not presented the argument fairly people might start to think the racists and homophobes might have a point. The left wing are making me sympathize with people who I do not agree with and I'm getting pissed off about it.

It’s up to you to decide if this is propaganda or not. If media is ‘redpilling’ you or causing you to sympathise with racists then I honestly don’t know what to do for you. If you think gays are like this show then you need to stop watching it and idk figure out how gay people act irl. If my only exposure to black people were Twitter than I’d fucking hate black people (Again I’m black but not American so maybe that plays a factor). You can hate the show and hate how overly gay it is but don’t conflate this with the lgbt community. Not all of us are valid overzealous Americans who vocalise all their minute problems on Twitter. If this is representation then I don’t fucking want it.

    On Supergirl they literally didn't finish the CGI at all in one episode so in in few frames she is cartoony. This CGI is amazing compared to Supergirl.
