Finally an opinion on this show that isn’t just “Season 1 kinda bad, rest of the show near perfect.” There are several points the show raises that gets kind of botched when you think about them.

Fringy (and Mauler) thoroughly voiced many of the incipient concerns I had when watching the show for the first time. The humanoid animal thing came off immediately as a poorly thought-out gimmick, and I am unsurprised to hear the writers did not even understand the implications of what they were working with, ie humanoid animal cannibalism being thought a joke instead of realized as a universe-breaking misstep. Humor undermining drama is the most salient point of all. It takes far more skill than the writers had to achieve what they thought they were going for, a show that manages to be serious and sensitive while somehow glib and mocking at the same time. 🤷

@@TheSatisfiedPig Honestly the only ATLA criticisms Mauler had that I found valid were the ones that the fanbase already have issues with like the lion turtles and the avatar state dues ex machina stuff. Mostly it just felt like he binged the show with the intent to trash it to vindicate rags running his mouth and making a fool of himself and brought on a dude who hadn't seen the show in ages to give the weakest pushback ever.

Own a sword for manor defence, since that's what the Magna Carta intended. Four heathens break into my cottage. "What in the Lord's name?" As I grab my aventail bascinet and windlass arbalest. Punch a bolt through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Throw a pot of naft at the second man and miss entirely since it's a hand thrown grenade in the dark and burns down the neighbour's harvest causing them to starve in the winter. I have to resort to the pot of boiling oil at the top of the hay loft "Deus Lo Vult!" The boiling oil completely drenches two men and cause them to scream in agony and writhe on the ground, racked with incomprehensible pain. The screams of pain frightens horses in nearby stables. Draw sword and charge the last terrified infidel. He bleeds out with no one to assist him since this is Feudal Europe and nobody gives a shit. Just as the Magna Carta intended.

I dunno if I agree or disagree, I've seen a handful episodes of BoJack in the past and I can barely remember anything about them; I also don't remember any funny moments or jokes which would stick in my head like with other comedy shows... I'm not saying it's evidence for it being bad, just that it means something. I can still recall moments from some of the first South Park episodes I've watched about 8 years ago.

@@bcanimacoes6280 no I get it. I mean parental abuse is typically more complicated then just the parent being an unrepentant monster, ya know? I mean from what I can gather Bojack’s whole thing is “why can’t I be happy?” But the answer is painfully obvious “your parents never showed you any affection so you don’t feel like you deserve affection.” It’s not complicated. @@andrewlevin6331That's really not the only message that was being communicated. Bojack's state is a combination of factors and it doesn't boil down to his family. A lot of his misery is due to his own fault and guilt. Which is why he also thinks he doesn't deserve to be happy nor does he try to make the necessary steps to improve.

Ay, I'm in this, and also got a response from the Froggle himself (hello Fringy, if you are stopping by here for whatever reason; hi Rags). I still remember the emotions I was going through this time as I was a very, very frustrated Bojack fan watching a show I kind of loved and held dear just becoming an absolutely god awful mess; I was also a relatively recent EFAP/MauLer fan around that time, too. To those curious, for whatever reason (I'm just assuming like the egotist I am), I no longer like the series and I feel unfathomably depressed as this show really did mean a lot to me when it came to speaking the emotions I felt about myself and trying-and failing-to tackle darker themes in an animated format. Only to fumble, greatly. Diane I would say is the glaring red flag for this show and its flaws, as she is a massive hypocrite and just does not get the amount of punishment Bojack goes through, and is treated like a voice of reason often and a soapbox and voice of the authors. Anyway, praise the Don and Tonald.

I'd say the show still holds some value to me as someone who enjoyed it as a teen (and was oblivious to politics) at the time. But I will say that for a show that criticizes the ideologies of Hollywood, it sure does share a lot of ideologies with Hollywood. That and it's super hard to rewatch as I've come to realize it's a surprisingly static series.

I'm not saying that it's evidence of the show being bad, it just makes me wonder if it could be any good if I literally deleted it from my memory. Iv'e even went back and watched season 1&2 again on your recommendation now that I'm older and didn't laugh once. Whereas Bojack universe people being happy eating chemically lobotomized chicken people is funny and good world building. It might be difficult to understand but for 99.99% of human existence everyone was fine with slavery, it might be abhorrent and, if you lived a sheltered life, "world breaking", so horrid no one would ever do it, but for almost everyone throughout history no one was freaking out and collapsing in the streets screaming at the sky, it was normal; and in the Bojackverse eating chemically lobotomized chicken people is normal and your reaction to it is the joke, you're the butt!

I guess it’s due to popularity but in hindsight, Californication, as rushed as it is with flawed choices and high and low seasons as it has, is the vastly better version of BoJack Horseman. Better characters, better intertwining of the comedy and has. significant story threads going through each season that connect all through out.

I haven't seen the show, but I find the take about the anthropomorphic animals eating other animals to be a little silly. It's obviously not meant to be taken that seriously. And no, you don't need that to be fully explored and developed unless you're an autist of the highest order. I'd guess it's meant to be something the audience realizes but largely goes uncommented on by the inhabitants of the world. Whether or not you find that amusing is a different discussion. Also, Mauler and Fringy love Buffy. Their opinions are kinda questionable.

IIRC they do spend at least 1 episode focused on the whole animals eating animals idea. Mauler and Fringy's point was that its a bizarre choice at best to have wacky high jinks and serious realistic drama at the same time. It'd be one thing if they never addressed it at all, its another to use how bizarre it is as a point of comedy while trying to tell a serious dramatic story.
