Before I begin my actual comment, I would like to apologize in advance for my inadequate level of English proficiency. I am not a native speaker of the world's current lingua franca which unfortunately leads to me making numerous embarrassing mistakes being made whenever I attempt to communicate using this language. Whenever I am reminded of how I lack the ability to convey my thoughts in an eloquent manner, I feel as though I have committed a cardinal sin, as though every English teacher in the world is simultaneously shaking their head and sighing due to how utterly disappointed they are at me. Although I know that saying sorry to those of you who are reading my comment will not change the fact that I fail miserably to write and speak perfect English, I am writing this as a way to deter a certain type of people who cannot stand poor English (Also known informally as Grammar Nazis) from mocking me by posting unwanted and unnecessary comments detailing my every blunder. In my humble opinion, making grammatical errors should be perfectly acceptable as native speakers should not expect non-native speakers to be able to communicate in their second or third languages eloquently. If you are able to completely understand what the other person wrote, is there really a problem with what they've written? No, because the entire concept of communication is the exchange of information between other intelligent beings, which means that no matter how the exchange of information is made, as long as the information is accurately shared there is not a fundamental issue with their ability to communicate. To see it in another way, remember that someone who isn't fluent in English is fluent in another language. When you think about it this way, isn't it impressive for someone to speak a second language in any capacity? Having empathy and respect are qualities that are sorely missing for far too many people these days, especially on the internet. That being said, I am aware that not all netizens who correct others are doing it to ridicule and shame. There are some who do so with the intent to help others improve and grow. However, displaying the failures of other people publicly will cause the person who is criticized to feel negative emotions such as shame and sadness due to the fact that their mistake has been made obvious which severely undermines the point they were trying to make in spite of their unfamiliarity with the English language. In most circumstances people are not looking for language help when they post anything online. Most people just want to enjoy themselves and have a good time on the internet which is why I would not encourage correcting other people regardless of your intentions. If you really do want to help others with their spelling or grammar, I would highly recommend you to help via messaging privately because not only will you not embarrass anyone, you can also go more in-depth with your explanation which I'm sure the other person will greatly appreciate if they want help, but I digress. I know that I've written a bit of an essay, but I hope I've made my points clear. Anyways, here is the comment I wanted to make: shid And coom,

Most Tolkien scholars see the gold-loving avarice of the Dwarves as Norse. They are in many ways hyper-Norse. An honor-based, rune-smithing, gold-loving society of bearded warriors and craftsmen. Tolkien simply removes their seafaring nature and makes them miners.

The most Jewish thing about them is really their vague philosophy towards religion and their diasporic nature, and only in certain ways. Even then; theres clearly some Christian influence as well - "... The shadow lies upon his tomb | In Moria, In Kazahd-Dūm | There lies his crown in waters deep | 'Til Durin wakes again from sleep..." Its clearly a creative amalgam to the point where its not even accurate to call it a caricature of anything. They're something new entirely... more than a sum of their parts

Funny thing is, these people use race like it's our world. Ie black, white and Asian, whereas the people in Middle Earth see race as what you are (Dwarf, Elf, Human) so racism there is more like what Gimlis people thought of elves. In the races themselves there really is no racism between them, they don't see colour as different to them. They would hate turncoats (Gondorians and Rohirrim to Southrons, Harad people and the Mountain men)but wouldn't hate them because of skin colour.

I watched this video as a teen and didnt really let it bug me. But coming back to it the whole thing just hinges on stereotypes to justify its explanation. So ironically, Cracked is just being extremely racist in an attempt to caricaturize Tolkien as though he also thought this way. The Elves are such an egregious example because apparently liking nature and having curved weapons means ur a buddist and your weapon is a katana?? And they're so agile, like those "kung-fu fightin' asians". They appeal to stereotypes that didn't even exist in Tolkien's day...

Apparently, the LOTR books were written in stages between 1937 and 1949, with the Hobbit having been published in 1937. It'd be a mighty big stretch to say that Tolkien based the dwarves on the Jews and created an allegory to their extermination when Tolkien probably wrote the Dwarvish language before the horrors of the Holocaust were common knowledge, especially since the Hobbit book was mostly about the dwarves. Hell, plenty of critics say WWI was a big inspiration for Tolkien's work, not WWII

Exactly. Tolkien also probably knew a lot of Jewish history. I think it's fair to say he read the Bible extensively, and was probably familiar with other Jewish texts and the works of historians like Josephus. It's not that much of a stretch for him to make characters in his world that are vaguely similar to Jewish people. To call that an "antisemitic caricature" for that reason alone is preposterous.

i can say for certain the original video was not meant as a parody, because they made the same mistake all the critics with no familiarity with the books make : They don't know the difference between Tolkien and Jackson The complain about the Easterlings looking middle eastern, and therefore 'muslim'.... that's a Jackson thing. The Easterlings in Tolkien were far more russo-slavic, and very multi-cultural. For logistical purposes they simplified them in the films so the costume department could produce enough weapons and armor for them. A lot of their complaints are based on the aesthetics of the movies and have nothing to do with what Tolkien wrote If this was supposed to be a parody, they'd have found someone who knew fuck-all about Tolkien to write it.

My worst puns are better than Cracked. And my worst pun is SO awful that I won't repeat it without literally being paid, because it's so awful that you must suffer a second way for having it inflicted upon the world. It's like watching children trying to repeat adult jokes without understanding the jokes. Also, impersonating Gollum is almost never funny unless it's a playfully sarcastic "My precious!" To be fair, Tolkien did admit that he did base the Dwarfs off of Jewish people. Though it doesn't mean they're antisemitic depictions. Nor did he intend to draw a fully direct depiction. Lord of the Rings is meant to be an escape from the world around you. Sure, some parts of the world are going to seep in, but not in an allegorical sense. Tolkien hated that and never wanted it. So fuck off if your taking this part overly seriously.

The intent is to start a "discussion" but it cakes the arguments in irony to avoid culpability for being wrong. The irony is also to make it clear that the arguments aren't meant to be taken very seriously. It's still a terrible video, and is basically just a collection of critiques of Tolkien that are clearly not understood by the creators of the video who've clearly never even read the book.

Far from fact the norse depiction of dwarves predates those early-modern anti semitic stereotypes. just like the depiction of ogres (on who the orcs are based on) predates stereotypes of black people. on both those points is very hard to think Scandinavians were thinking of jews just like anglo Saxons weren't thinking in Sub-Saharians, or even knew too much of them for that matter.

@@martinguerra5152 I never said their were jewish stereotypes in Nordic sagas, but to say they're "modern" stereotypes is a bit off. Nordic myth aren't necessarily medieval, though they were written down and catalogued in the middle ages. During the middle ages is when a lot of Jewish people migrated to many germanic regions in what is now Europe. Its around this time period that many of what are now classic fairy tales were being created, particularly those catalogued by the brothers Grimm, and in those there are a lot of Jewish stereotyping, including what is now known as blood libel. It is from these stereotypes that were derived the looks of many fantasy characters, such as wizards and witches with pointy hats reflecting Jewish travellers wearing the Pileus Cornutus, and it can be presumed that many half-remembered mythological beings and creatures of legend were artificially linked to those of Jewish people in order to degrade and stereotype them
