I agree. No bad thoughts or desires towards the other guy. But there is also a strong sense of sadness, depression and low self-esteem: "if I could be that guy instead of me". I'm worse than this guy, I'm not good enough for her. Been there tho.

This is a devastating feeling, knowing your loved one is in love with someone else and still you are happy because she's happy and you don't wish nothing bad for both of then. "If I could be that guy, instead of me" states the feeling of wishing to be like him but not to replace him. I remembered this song because a little time ago I lost my crush to someone else. Some people -like myself- are just made to suffer.

This must be the saddest song I've listened so far. It really translates the feeling of completely giving up on yourself for someone, to the point of wishing to be someone else.

Just discovered that song, so accurate and sweet and painful at the same time. Loved it.

It is because that song of Eels has the same harmonies and riff than a french song of the 70s which was very popular. This song is called "Le coup de soleil" by Richard Cocciante.

I saw them perform this at Brixton Academy last September and I was totally mesmerized. The emotion and deepness of this song just grabbed me and wouldn't let go. Genuinely brought a tear to my eye. How E keeps doing it is truly remarkable.

Some incredible feeling arises inside every time I hear this song. Something between death and incredible joy.

I grew up with Eels, Mr E!'s voice calms me down. The music makes me mellow. I'm so happy to have this kind of music.

The eels have such distinctive music that I can always instantly tell it's the eels whenever they're played in movies or some TV show. As a result, I know that almost everyone has heard the eels but nobody I know has heard of them :|

I will NEVER tire of this song, so simple but so beautiful

We've all been there, (no matter what gender you identify with) that's the beauty of this song. It's been sung a million times over hundreds of years. Never gets old. But this is one of the most sweetest, tender, simple versions of that old tale I've heard. Well done guys.

I discovered this song right after I opened to my crush (probably my biggest). Well she refused me but said "I love your friendship so let's not cut the contact between us." After this words, my love for her just got worse. I loved her more than I've loved her before. Unfortunately, it's like impossible for us to be together. When I listen to this song I always think about her and wonder what could have happened... And it makes me cry. Beril if you see this, (you probably won't) I love you.
