Indians and Chinese have more motivation to succeed because they don't live comfortable lives and have to find a nice job to change that. Americans are spoiled with a comfortable life with lots of options for career paths that they don't take academics as seriously.

Well... I do agree that Jay did not see many creative indians compared to americans is because the opportunities for indians in india are very less. But that does not mean that education in india is poor compared to US. There are hundreds of thousands of talented students coming out of indian colleges every year. If everybody is given the same opportunity like american students, then India will become the top country in no matter of time. It is very sad to see that all these talents are utilized for the sake US development today. Indians can only blame the corrupted politicians and rulers...

you are totally right. though I live in America, I am foreign born student who recently moved from my country and I see students who has no worries about their future. my American friends have easy life, their parents pay their college fees or they take loans, but I work 35 hours a week take 16 credits, and still have higher GPA compared to them.

I did my undergrad from India and I went to grad school in US, I can say I would still graduate from grad school right after high school without even going to undergrad program that's how easy education here is, but at the same time research and practical experience is way better here than in India(I think that's what makes higher education better in US)

I accept one of Jay's points. Many Indians are creative. But the social system in India doesn't encourage creative people. In many cases, Indians are forced to do some jobs they don't like, to support their family. If an Indian shows a brilliant business or project idea and asks for loan, most of the time banks reject him.

Business is all about input and output! The US spends 5.6 % of GDP on education where as India spends about 3.6% of GDP. India's total GDP is 2,051,228 million US dollars where as the US GDP is 17,348,075 million US dollars which is roughly 7 times higher than Indian. on the contrary India has 212 million students versus 53 million students (the number is four times). The US kids get 28 times more money spent on their education (infrastructure wise) than Indian kids. Is the output propositional to input? That is what Bob Compton is asking Jay. The only difference between Jay and Bob is, Bob talks with content and Jay has mastered the art of talking for hours without any content like Indian politicians.

The problem with the Indian education system in a nutshell: too much emphasis on rote-learning, too many coaching classes that teach students how to pass tests rather than think and process what they've learned. There are way too many automatons graduating in India. A fraction of bright and motivated students use the system to their advantage, but for the most part, a degree doesn't mean as much as it should.

Yes, you are absolutely right. Indians are one of the most scientifically illiterate people on the planet. They learn science in schools, and they believe religious BS, over facts. In US this is not happening, china is also much better. Students are learning for the exams, not for understanding reality. This is why India never produces Nobel price Winners, in science. All they produce is engineers (use science, but no clue on how..), not scientists. I met Indian "scientists" who thinks their gods can travel faster than light and stuff.

Paul V Barbar I'd agree to the point where you're talking about students and institutions teaching science, but the USA doesn't fare a whole lot better if you're talking about scientific literacy. 42% of the USA believes in young Earth creationism, for instance.You have similar statistics for climate change denial. I mean, look at USA's current President Elect. I think scientific literacy (or lack thereof) is a global problem. In the end, belief, anecdotes, stories, myths and legend generally trump scientific method in peoples' psyches. Ken Ham's creationist museum in Kentucky is run by a microbiology graduate... so believing in BS can clearly happen anywhere. I'd also have to disagree about this being why India produces few Nobel laureates: India's best minds usually leave the country because there's a fantastic dearth of funding for science in India. For that matter, there's not a whole lot of scope for a life dedicated to academia either. There's even a term for it: "brain drain". China is probably faring better, yes.

I am an Indian, was born and raised in India. well I think, we Indians are not good innovators,we lack innovation skills. we are more concerned about the conventional ways of education like getting a degree, and then getting a job. we are afraid to take risks, and this may be becuz we have limited resources or opportunities or and are burdened by responsibilities, so we prefer to take a safe route.Innovations require a kind of risk taking.you have to leave the safe path, and start your journey on a path that may not have been taken before. Most of the great innovators of modern day technology such as Steve jobs,Bill gates and others are Americans,they took risks, they put everything at stake and came up with things that no one had imagined.we have an education system which is good enough, but still needs to be improved. Yes we have billionaires like Ambanis, Tatas, Birlas..but they are not innovators, they are businessmen. On a global scale, Indians have proved themselves in almost every field, and its been just 67 years since we got our freedom, so we are doing good and can do better in the coming few decades. Now, the people are coming up with good Ideas,instead of being some one who is looking for a job, they are creating jobs for others.

I didn't mean that creativity itself is a bad thing I was referring to the more "Creative" subjects such as visual arts, music, acting, etc. Those things are of course GREAT and important but I think science (medicine, technology, etc.) is more crucial....

Well I am an Indian, I have done my Undergrads from India and doing my post from the UK. What I have seen in the two system is that, in India if you are studying a subject, it is done in more depth than in the UK(and I am studying in a Uni tht is ranked 73rd in the world). Plus back in India during my undergrad, since I was doing IT, we could be asked a question from anywhere relating to that subject(at least in my Uni), but in the UK it is limited to wat is done in the lectures.

They are mixing up two very different things... Education in India isn't any better than education in the US (I am Indian and have seen both sides), its the sheer number of students that DEPEND on getting a job. The US has a social security system, and a social payout system that allows unskilled labor to live comfortably. INDIA does not have that. For most of us, if we don't make the grade, we don't get the job. For every job in India, we have over 100,000 job seekers competing. This makes us study harder - we study to survive. It is also true that creativity and entrepreneurship were largely discouraged since they involve a fairly large amount of risk. The standard of living in India does not allow easy breaking into a new venture. Having said that, the situation has changed substantially in the last 6 years and we see people right out of college becoming job creators as opposed to job seekers. The nations in question have remarkable CULTURAL, POLITICAL and SOCIAL differences and comparison of young children and their levels of education is unfair.

People like Jay exist in every country and these are the sort of people who stops the growth of a country by simply being stubborn in denying the facts. They live with the dream of 'I am the perfect' , 'I am the greatest' , 'I don't need to learn anymore'

Indian education system is good for US companies as it supplies them highly skilled people for high tech and management jobs. But it is not aligned with India's political system, although things are improving now at a good pace.

See this argument is funny because they are both right, but there is a huge misunderstanding between them. The first guy is saying that the most educated people come from india and china which is right. The second guy agrees with him but is saying that the political systems in those countries does not allow creativity as much as the US. The first guy misunderstood that as the education system does not allow creativity.

America is so good just bcoz Best of the World go to America. Eg Elon Musk.

I`m an Indian and i tell u all my experience. I`m in class 12 and students who choose humanities and commerce are considered inferior than those who take science.And also"NO PLACE FOR EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES"-No sports,no dance/music. Those who do these stuff are considered out of their"TRACKS".(Parents:Are u mad dude! Go study don`t do silly stuffs). If somebody dares to choose these careers(specially girls) then u will get these remarks: Parents:No, Take science. No sports no games from now on wards.Become a doctor or engineer otherwise people will tease us for you. Even i have faced these situations thats why im writing.

Second thing is that we Indians are forced by our family to be on the safe side and either become a doctor or work under some big company. I am Indian. Very few American firms (Facebook, Google, Goldman) recruits raw talent from Top Universities (India or America). They want people who provide plug and play skills in a particular sector / technology, but trained by other companies. That is fundamentally non-meritocratic. Which is why they prefer Infosys 2 years experienced professional over IIT or MIT grad.

The fact is that all good students of India and China want to go to the American Universities.

Pointless argument, they both kinda right. Not everyone is creative(this goes for both the countries). Im studying in an Indian college. Some of my classmates cant even write a single leave letter(even by googling), and some of them are real talented in their own way. We have top colleges in some cities and some crap colleges somewhere else(in terms of innovative teaching, using the right tech, etc). We have a national culture where people are attracted towards grade and raking system instead of real knowledge and researches, but hey, its not for all of them. This answers why some Indians are creative (they see the value of knowing and interested in learning more) Since some creative people end up working in the US doesnt mean Indian engineers are top notch. The only difference I feel about the education system of two countries is that US students can be upfront and question everything they want to know, but in India, students are supposed to follow their teachers not asking why or asking too much questions(arguing with a teacher ends up in disobedience, not respecting, etc.) Thanks to the internet, it helps the introverts ! Education in India is far more cheaper than in the US. You get what you pay. Coming back to the question, 'Which is the best education system ?' You answer it.

I am an American who has studied higher education in the US and India (earned a master's degree in an Indian college). There are merits and demerits to both educational system. No system is perfect. There are arguments that even the US system stifles creativity. Schools and colleges train people to be workers and OBEY a boss. The type of creative they talk about is entrepreneurship. There is merit in saying that true entrepreneurs get their creativity sucked out of them in college. Why did Bill Gates drop out of Harvard? There are different types of creativity. They did not have enough time to go into specifics.

(My personal view) More like they aren't dumb.. they are not allowed to exhibit what they can do as all you do is do the goddamned coachings for all the life. All for getting into IITs and then it's just amazing that when you expect the least work, there it storms the most. Americans are no way that "creative" they can just do whatever they desire, so long as they have the resources and the will to, while all we do is sit around waiting for when this college gets finished, go to the university, and when we attain university we grow senile and all the "Creativity" goes to hell. The MIT allows undergraduates and it never judges people by their age, (that's most important) but their experience. IIT segregates and forms up those bunch of people who are born doing coachings, they couldn't care less about what you have "creativity" or other bunch of crap, as they consider creativity and undergraduates as not "smart enough" they end up loosing their edge over the top universities of the world. While that's just how things go here, but not to point fingers on anyone, I don't mean any disrespect on american society. Sorry if I disrespect you guys in anyways. But we've got it all too tough unlike you guys. Furthermore, we appreciate you all allowing us to work with your companies, and in the future to, we hope to do so. Hope that explains how we're different, simply put we hold Maths from the day we are born while you hold Computers, that can and may be the best possible reason. And as to this whole idea of comparison, some sort of retarded minds must have thought about it, as we shouldn't compare the two as the conditions are way different.

After 10 yrs....things have changed...80% of us indian engineers are jobless or have no choice but to work unemployed....

This is the main problem! Ppl like that who make bold claims without even being in the country once! There are smart ppl in India, China & all over the world! The only limiting factor is political biases and corrupt agendas! With so many ppl in India and China, it just gets noticed more often and thus ignored!

India is the only country where we first become engineer and then we become what we want.

I am an Indian, doing my grad studies in the US, and working for a software company. So I have seen both the education systems. India is in NO WAY inferior in education system to the US. Applying what you study is very different from studying. The quality of an engineer is in application, and the quality comes with experience rather than reading journals and books. Indian education system is far ahead of the league as far as the quality of math and cognitive skills development is concerned.

Well I had my bachelors in india and masters in usa.The difference which I observed most was that the edu system in usa is very scientific and gives you lot of freedom.In india , you have to wriggle out of all the barriers.So in effect these things made indian students more sincere and when they come in USA they become more creative than they were in India.....So in a sense we had it in a hard way than our american friends, but nevertheless they were gracious enough to accept us :) ....

I'm an Indian, and J is right. Our education system sucks, and it sometimes even makes me feel bad about being born in India. No expert can understand it, only the ones living in the country do.

Indian Education System in my view point is the world's best education system. The only flaw i see is the kind of pressure the system puts on the students in the higher secondary level when it comes to entrance examinations for their professional studies. To some extent our education system also doesn't give importance to the student's ability to think and the students are not trained to develop their tastes and skills of interest. I hope these would soon be rectified too. On the other hand lifestyle also plays a very important role. Indian parents give very much importance for their children's education, while i dont think parents outside doesn't take this as important as Indians do. The Indian parents take strain in sitting with the children to teach them which the other parents dont do because of the kind of system that prevails there or so. A student who has studied in India would find it really very easy to adapt to the education system of other countries as they are trained here in that way and would find it rather easy. But some one who studied outside India would find it difficult to follow the system here, because they are not trained to adapt to the different education systems. In ancient times, India had the Gurukula system of education in which anyone who wished to study went to a teacher's (Guru) house and requested to be taught. If accepted as a student by the guru, he would then stay at the guru's place and help in all activities at home. This not only created a strong tie between the teacher and the student, but also taught the student everything about running a house. The guru taught everything the child wanted to learn, from Sanskrit to the holy scriptures and from Mathematics to Metaphysics. The student stayed as long as he/she wished or until the guru felt that he had taught everything he could teach. All learning was closely linked to nature and to life, and not confined to memorizing some information. The modern school system was brought to India, including the English language, originally by Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay in the 1830s. The curriculum was confined to “modern” subjects such as science and mathematics. The school system in India has four levels: lower primary (age 6 to 10), upper primary (11 and 12), high (13 to 15) and higher secondary (17 and 18). There are mainly three streams in school education in India. Two of these are coordinated at the national level, of which one is under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The second central scheme is the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE). It seems that this was started as a replacement for the Cambridge School Certificate. Both the CBSE and the ICSE council conduct their own examinations in schools across the country that are affiliated to them at the end of 10 years of schooling (after high school) and again at the end of 12 years (after higher secondary). Each state in the country has its own Department of Education that runs its own school system with its own textbooks and evaluation system. The state of Kerala has the highest literacy rate among all states, and was declared the first fully literate state about a decade back. Kerala was also the first state in the country to introduce Information Technology as a subject of study at the High School level. It was started in class 8 with the textbook introducing Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office. The state is now moving towards IT Enabled Education. Eventually, IT will not be taught as a separate subject. Instead, all subjects will be taught with the help of IT so that the children will, on the one hand, learn IT skills and, on the other, make use of educational applications and resources in the Internet (such as textual material from sites like Wikipedia, images, animations and videos) to study their subjects and to do exercises. Teachers and students have already started using applications such as Dr. Geo, GeoGebra, and KtechLab for studying geometry and electronics. Applications like Sunclock, Kalzium and Ghemical are also popular among teachers and students.

I think American families should practice discipline. that will help the kids there to not drift away from focussing on what they are good at. currently India is facing the problem of kids underperforming due to increasing over-liberal thinking. i think technology and luxury are main enemies but we cant shake them off... oh well. Practice self control. induce good habits right from the start. I think discipline is what is needed to conquer these problems nothing else.

I have been a teacher in India and after coming here,I have seen my son's curriculum in America.....what I realised is Indian system of education is more "learning by heart"...or as we say 'by hearting everything" ,as the tension and competition of exams takes away the fun or curiosity of learning......American system involves,critical thinking....I wish there was a system that involved combination of both.....I see that change started in few schools in India...

I think even though Jay does not have much of a point here, but still the American education has been superior right from 1st grade. Being an Indian I go with Jay though, the Indian education does not encourage creativity as compared to American. Why it has become so difficult to find skilled labour, it's certainly the advance of technology that has made them lazy not not to strive hard enough than before(the transistor revolution , Internet )and also many americans are striving towards entertainment stream for their career. Indians do jobs not out of interest or curosity but for money which I hate myself. Any moron can build creative skills if it strives on the job via persiverance. If won't find any Indian doing expiriments or going out on a venture totally on its own curosity which is pretty much necessary to start a company.

whether crap or not indians are smart people...even someone isnt that smart the person tends to pick up things quickly when into practical scenarios! Talent is random ! can be anywhere although IIT is prestigious that doesnt mean talent cant be found out anywhere else!...IIT is just good as getting jobs..it cant things inside by brain to invent thing!..just opportunity thats it! I think americans are good at inventing things (basically because they get proper envionment and funding and offcourse they r more towards inventing) while indians are good at following and making practical things out of that...

It all comes down to the human factor , if the student has decent aspirations he can excel even if he is from a third rate university or school in a third rate country . But one thing is for sure General Education in India is far better than that in America . And now many schools in India are catching up with the "American Model" of education of having project work and specializations etc . Which in my time was not there . General Education is the foundation to a better world view . And it is not so bad a person can adapt quite easily to specialized study environments . Primary has always to be general education . All said and done it is the individual that matters and his attitude to studies , nothing else .Centres of excellence exist in every country , they are the exceptions and not the rule . Harvard, MIT, Stanford etc are among the best , but not everyone gets in , and not every successful person who has schooling has necessarily gone to a centre of excellence. In later life it is acumen and application of what one has learnt that matters .

American creativity :- Scientist 1 :' We have no option but to use rocket engine to propel mars explorer all the way to mars. Scientist 2 :- Can we pull it off? Scientist 1 :- Yes, we can!! We are Nasa, We are Murica. Scientist 2 :- You sure? Because you said the same last 5 times. Scientist 1 :- Dont worry, we will be successful this time. We have spent billions of taxpayers dollars. After launch attempt :- Scientist 2 :- Damn, we did it again. We have wasted taxpayers money for the sixth consecutive attempt. Indian Creativity :- Scientist 1 :- We dont have launch vehicle big enough to launch mars explorer aka chandrayan along with its rocket engine. Scientist 2 :- We should use earth to slingshot mars explorer all the way to mars. Scientist 1 :- Sounds like a nice plan, but it will require precision calculation to pull off this trick. The reason many Americans are not going for higher education is I feel,is due to the high fee involved....Either super brilliant ones can get through the scholarship or the super rich ones...Well how about the average ones....on the other hand in India fees in the government colleges are quite afforable....other than the few privately owned technical or medical colleges.....Getting college degree is quite affordable

Jay have no idea about how much students in India have getting better education everyday. As an Indian., i can 100% assure that Indians getting very better education system.

Come and visit us in INDIA, our educational system is 10 time tougher than you and I can guarantee you that... ;) At least mine is...

But it is the Student effort that make the difference In higher education IIT ,IIM ,JNU and IISc are top level but only tiny tiny chunk of population get degree from these institutes and then they go to WEST....And then these gentlemen see them and think that they represent whole INDIA.

India has more than 50% of its population below the age of 25 and more than 65% below the age of 35 so if you have so much competition to survive you try to get good education to earn bread and butter there is no comparison in us and Indian education how much of your population is under 25 so even our education sucks we know how to get job

I can't speak on behalf of the U.S as I never studied there & not in India either. The fact India produces more engineers - duh! it's because of their massive population? And most parents usually want their kid to be either an 'engineer' or a 'doctor'. That's really frustrating! But it's interesting that the U.S still produces top level talent, innovation and entrepreneurs, mostly I think it's because the way culture and education both encourage creative thinking.

Well said,most of the parents in India want their kid to become doctor or engineer, so most of them are forced to become an Engineer and screw up their life.Though IITs are a class apart from rest of the Indian universities,I dont think it has the class of Harvard or the MIT.Most of the graduates want to pursue their post graduation in US ,UK or Germany. So, its just a hype created by the western media about the Indian education.

NAVEEN ANU dude if indian education is not up to the mark then how come indians are becoming successful there in America? according to a recent statistical report, 33% of the IT professionals in America a re indians of which 25% were completly educated in India Also 30% of scientists in America are Indians of which 20% were educated in India and rest 10 % in places like UK ,germany etc. so if indian education system is bad, why are indians successful there countries. Take Satya Nadella for example, he was born and educated in India (Hyderabad). so dont underestimate the indian education system.

well i am an Indian and i am doing my syjc , i have seen the american curriculum for physics , I am learning about things like nuclear fission and fusion , dual nature of matter , semiconductor electronics , atoms and communication systems , with all the electricity and magnetism that american curriculum is teaching . 5 more chapter and some of them are so radically different from each other , it helps us get insights into what will come in the future and what we have interest in so that we can choose the appropriate field
