Education Spotlight: Rod Morgenstein on Rock Drums

Музыка

Legendary Dixie Dregs and Winger drummer Rod Morgenstein has worn a lot of hats over the course of his extensive career. One of Rod's newest initiatives is the work he's done with Berkleemusic, the online continuing education division of Berklee College of Music, in creating his 12-week online course Rock Drums.
This extensive hands-on, performance-based online course covers a variety of key topics, such as different kinds of beats and fills, how to change the sound and feel of a groove, the influence of Latin rhythms on rock drumming, ghost-stroking techniques, syncopated grooves, odd time, double bass drumming, the rudiments as they apply to rock drumming, and much more.
Rod will be releasing a free video lesson from his course weekly for the next four weeks. For more free lesson videos, and information on Rod's course, visit www.berkleemusic.com/landing/...

You gotta love this guy. What a great drummer and teacher of drum techniques. There shouldn't even be a thumbs down option on this priceless footage.

Saw him with the Dixie dregs last year in New Orleans. He was just great. That infectious smile and positive spirit in addition to his killer playing. He just killed it.

I'm not a lefty but decided buy his Putting It All Together video back in the 90's. That video helped inspire & shape the future of my playing and drum vocabulary. Rod has always been and will always be one of my favorite drummers to listen and learn from. I'm greatly indebted to him and am very appreciative of the tools he made available to self taught drummers before the internet was an option to learn from. Thank You Rod!!

Rod, thanks alot for this. It opened me up tonight when I was at the studio. I needed some fills that the producer hadnt heard before and I remembered what you said about it. I tried a one hand snare and kick combo that was unusual for me and it went off great. Thanks for your help and insight !

Thank You So Much for doing these lessons to help all drummers to learn new ways or different ways of playing and enhancing and expanding playing licks not used before. I hope this is ok to ask but are you Indian or part Indian? If so from which Indian Decent? I’m part Cherokee is why I’m asking. My Dad’s Mother was full blood Cherokee. I’ve been keeping up with all of the Drum and Drum Hardware that your selling off. Man do I wish I could afford one of your Premiere Kits. I owned an incredible Premiere Kit that I gave to my son many years ago after he started playing. I never pushed him or our 2 girls to play any instrument or any sport they didn’t want to. But I was elated when he started playing many years ago and the avenue he was able to achieve with playing drums. Far further than I ever did. Being able to record one album and tour. Then after meeting his wife he was already a intern at a large Church in Austin Tx. So he quit the band to be a full time employee, a drummer each Sunday and the head over the video photography department. At that time the 2 other members of the band changed the name and type of music they were playing. And a RCA Record Exec heard them in a bar in Austin, Tx and signed them to a record deal. They begged my son to stay in the band and he would of become a lot wealthier but he choose or was led to work at Austin Stone Church and be at home and to provide and raise their son and soon to be a second baby girl. I know every musician would jump at such a opportunity but he knew in his heart what he needed to do and what he needed to do for himself and his family. I’m disabled and wish so badly I could afford one of the kits that is for sale or some of your cymbals. The black Sabian’s look amazing and I’m sure they sound even better. Hopefully one item may be in the sale that I can afford and own a piece of your history and the drum items you’ve used over your career. Again thank you for this and any future tutorials would be great to watch and learn techniques not used before but implemented to expand licks and techniques is always a great thing to learn to do and play. Stay Safe & Take Care More Today Than Ever Before. God Bless

Dom Famularo said the EXACT same thing in a clinic - "Sometimes, it's more to play less". And he did it wonderfully like Mr. M is dong here. Very insightful.
