Nice to see Edifier getting postive reviews outside of Europe. It's also great that these have a Sub Out. My R2730DB also have one and it really does make a difference when you add a subwoofer. I wish all Edifier models (especially the higher-end ones) had a Sub Out too. I'd love to hear your opinion on other Edifier products in the future.

The sub out is a must. Here's why: "....I reviewed a sub for another publication recently and was surprised by how much it seemed to improve the sound quality in the mid and treble, how on earth could a low frequency driver that was limited to frequencies below 60Hz make the system more revealing higher up the range. I put this question to Hideto Watanabe, senior manager at Eclipse Home Audio who played bassoon and conducted in an orchestra in his youth, a factor that clearly informed his answer. Apparently it comes down to the ‘pyramid’ of dynamics that an orchestra needs to achieve for it to produce what Hideto describes as a ‘rainbow of harmonics’. The pyramid is a tonal one with bass at the bottom as a foundation, midrange notes in the middle and treble at the top; the wider the area of the pyramid that each tonal range occupies the greater the dynamics (power) required from that range. In essence bass notes need to be supporting the mid and treble to achieve a good harmonic result from the entire orchestra.... That being the case you can see how a subwoofer that’s limited to low bass frequencies can assist the main speakers in producing greater harmonic detail in a stereo system."....www.the-ear.net/review-hardware/eclipse-td725swmk2-subwoofer

hey there! i don't know much about audio or what is the best thing to buy and not buy. i know about a lot of different genres of music and recently fell into the market place/offer up buy sale and trade groups. i started it off with a Sony STR k9900p and i was using two front channel and a front/rear center channel set up with a 10" subwoofer they were garage sat 80% of their life. to the end of this story im left with the 10 inch subwoofer and i'm getting a set of these tomorrow from a guy. i work on electronics and computers so i was comfortable changing out the RCA going into the active sony 10" and now i can use that sub on a receiver with A&B selection. i can't adjust the cross over though or is there a way i can? i also use a shanling ms1 to play my playlist from tidal music usually with a 3.5mm to rca. i have been shadow watching this channel for months and never comment i just like some of the videos i get time to watch. does cheap audio man have any recommendations? this is all without a budget so if you have recommendations on what to spend 200 is about my limit. i was thinking keep the sub the two edifiers and incorporate a center channel with some depth. i use my audio primarily for gaming, movies and mostly every era of music in a bedroom/office space

Far as I can tell, the actual speakers (tweeter and woofer) are exactly the same between the two. The frequency response, according to the Amazon listings, are also identical (60hz - 20khz). The r18 has some more inputs and possibly more outputs, so I think you're just paying more for the technology inside the case, not for the sound. Also a nicer remote, maybe? If you're looking to set it up with a record player, either should be pretty much identical. I have the r1700dbs, and they sound good with a turntable. Just be sure to get a turntable with the pre-amp built in or a separate pre-amp, no matter which pair you settle on. I have used and love the Audio Technica LP60x. It's a budget turntable, but it's a very reputable manufacturer, and almost all budget (100 - 150 dollar) turntables use an Audio Technica head anyway, so I figure just get it right from the source. Enjoy!

Problem with both these speakers are they only have 4 inch woofer driver. I seriously considered these for my kitchen... ended up getting the Sony SSCS-5 w/ A Fosi chip amp while they went on sale. No sub out but with the Sony's sitting on their sides on top of the kitchen cabinets about 8 inches from the wall I don't need or want a sub. Streaming Amazon HD from the Eco Dot or from my LG G7 phone (which has a pretty freaking great DAC) 3.5 mm out to RCA or from the Fosi's BT. I think it was a much better solution for a few dollars less.

Planning to use them with my pc, gigabyte aorus ultra z390 motherboard. Does it make sense to buy R1280DBs just for the sake of spdif? what do you think, which ones are worth taking for the best experience?

Hello, my Russian friend. I think you're getting a bit of a better setup with the R1700bts than the 1280's. You can always buy a super cheap usb to optical converter until you've got the money for a decent stand alone DAC. I'd do the R1700bts with a cheap converter and then add a nicer dac later.

I believe you can still add a subwoofer to the r1700BT in either of the following ways: Option 1: A '3.5mm Male to 2 RCA Male' cable connected to the source and an 'RCA Female to 2 RCA Male' cable connected to each of the RCA Males. Option 2: A '3.5mm Male to 2 RCA Female' cable connected to the source and an 'RCA Male to 2 RCA Male' cable connected to each of the RCA Females. Option 3: A '3.5mm Male to 2 3.5mm Female' cable connected to the source and a '3.5mm Male to 2 RCA Male' cable connected to each of the 3.5mm Females. I think this should work, although I have not tried it myself.

@@brandongrech8111 that would work if the source has a variable voltage to the speakers like a DAC with volume controls. At that point the DAC would in essence become a preamp. I’ve done this before and it does work. Without variable voltage though the sub and speakers will not have a linear volume gain and the sub wouldn’t have any volume gain at all.

I only know about what I wrote because I read that it works earlier today and intended to buy the cables to do it myself. Could you tell me if this solution would work if the source is a PS5 (connected to monitor via hdmi and the speaker/sub cables would be connected to the monitor via 3.5mm), as well as in the case of the source being a desktop PC?

Hi man! I Don't think you can stay competitive in fps\tps games with speakers, at least not without a huge effort. Tough I imagine if you set your whole room up for this very purpose with sound absorbing foam, and with the speakers in the height and literally facing your ears in 180⁰ you'd get much better outcome even with a ~100€ Edifier than going with any 500£+ speaker simply put on your desk. But headphones are just way too good for directional sound. I have the R1280db's on my desk, they're great really but there's no way I can determine the direction other players are approaching me from as close as even a 10 dollar headphone would. And let's say you have 2 monitors, the moment you look at the side monitor your room setup might won't work because your ears are looking at a slightly different angle to where the speakers are so you slightly missplace what you think about the enemy's position.
