My brother passed in 2017. He was just 36. I was first to get the call. It was 6am on my birthday ... of all days. So, my birthday gift on that day was not only the horrible news itself, but to then realize that I was first to find out and now I had the responsibility of calling our mother to tell her. It wasn't my best day. Now every birthday that I have remaining will be ... let's say different. One of the last things that he ever said to me was, " I wish that we could all be closer as a family." Time and distance had made him feel like something was missing. Now his words overwhelm me sometimes. Thank you Ed for writing about stuff like this.

@@enmanuelsan Actually yes, absolutely. Like I said complex emotions from the loss to suicide. When you lose someone to suicide anger and rage are also part of the complex emotions you feel. I've lost several people to suicide, 2 very close people that way. 1 my own mom which I found. I certainly felt that among many other emotions. I absolutely was full of rage, sadness, empathy & felt like I was gonna die from heartbreak. Also people are mistaken about it being about Chris. It's about a father who lost his daughter at the Sandy Hook school shooting, who Eddie became very close to. He just couldn't bare to go on any longer with the grief. I read an interview with Eddie who was asked if it was about Chris. He clarifies it in the interview but also states that he sees why people think that.

The first words out of my mouth was actually “… it’s about time.” After listening to all his music for 30+ years and being married to a musician myself, it’s the waiting for all the pain and heartache and anger to finally leak out. They all can say they’re fine, but it’s the music that tells the truth of how they really feel. It’s the release of it that gives me (and as a wife) the assurance that *now* they’re going to be ok. When they can’t hold it back anymore, now they can finally move forward. Ed, we miss him too. Everyday.

I feel like this amazing song is the second part of the heart-wrenching "Comes then goes" from Gigaton. Both songs show different stages of Eddie's grieving for Chris. In the first song he was trying to make sense of what happened and all the pain he was feeling. Now in this song it seems like he's slowly coming to terms with Chris' death. Eddie is not only a poet, but a genuinely good man who for many many years truly loved Chris for what he was as a person and brother to him. I hope that through his art Ed finds a way to cope with this immense tragedy, like he's done so many times before ❤️.

The lyrics leave you feeling this is perhaps about Cornell. Its what resonates with E V,s music when its raw emotion coming from him, it sounds like a more classic PJ song too. Its about time he had another solo out, Im looking forward to it.

What a touching and sensitive song. At the same time so visceral, as if his heart was screaming every line. And this cry represents all of us, who also feel this loss. Represents anyone who has lost a close relative or a heart brother. Thank you very much Mr. Vedder for expressing with such lucidity and affection our cry of mourning and longing. It will always hurt but this tribute is certainly a way to find comfort and healing. Stay safe 🙏❤️

Eddie vedder is the perfect person to make a song like this, his voice just Carrie’s so much emotion, the first few times I listened to this song I almost cried from the pain in Eddie’s voice, such a strong song, might be my favorite from earthling.

I’m still touched and so sad by Chris’ death, but this song also makes me think of my brother’s death, nearly four years ago. People like to say “it gets easier”, but in my experience these things get harder. I’m sure we have all lost at least one, or maybe many people, and so this song can touch us all in different ways. Thanks Ed for sharing this beautiful song with the world.

Lyrics make perfect sense to me. Had a friend die by his own hand. The love gets irrevocably tangled with guilt and anger that I didn’t realize how badly he needed help and he didn’t reach out to me or anyone else for help and find a better solution. Thank you Mr. Vedder, for continuing to try to work these things out in music and sharing it with the rest of us.
