Millenials and Zoomers don't realize in the late 70's that hard rock was almost dead and disco was dominating radio --- bands like Black Sabbath and KISS were becoming stale and people weren't buying the records anymore --- Dave and Eddie literally saved rock music and made it fun again --- setting up the entire "hair metal" scene of the 80's

  • @guitarmeetsscience

Absolutely spot on Fred! And then again in the early '80s a lot of synth-driven pop was threatening to dominate. Again, Van Halen saved the day by fighting fire with fire essentially. Of course that was not Eddie's motive, but they kind of did it just by chance. So then the metal bands started incorporating keyboards and the rest is history. Or really I guess pop and hard Rock and metal all kind of played nicely with each other after that point.

I wonder why so many VH fans feel the need to go full-on tribal and pick sides based on the band's front man. I agree the dynamic changed with the departure of DLR, but that doesn't make Sammy trash. I think Dreams is a terrific VH song, for example, and there's no way on this planet Roth hits those stratospheric highs that SH does. By all means have your favorite, but how 'bout we all enjoy the best of both iterations?

Thank you so much - it's funny because somebody else said that too. I thought I must have had a real brain fart so I had to go back and watch that section. It turns out that I covered the part about I'll wait concluding it talking about how Michael McDonald was brought in, then I just moved on to drop dead legs. I'm thinking The transition just wasn't smooth - because I immediately uttered title of the next song instead of saying "another song on the album.... Drop dead legs...." Or something to that effect. It's a good lesson in making sure topic transitions are done smoother. Thank you for pointing that out!

That's definitely an interesting take. I'm more particular toward the four piece sound with a single guitar, but they did use it to great effect when Sammy joined because Sammy is also a pretty ripping guitarist. They complimented each other - so I guess even if early VH had a guitar player that worked really well with Eddie it might have been a pretty explosive sound live. Very interesting take Thanks for that
