Van Halen had two diamond certified albums: VH1 and 1984. Bookends to the DLR era.

This album is a timeless classic and is one of the greatest of their amazing discography. The guitar playing is beyond sick for its time. The drums..amazing.

Some interesting statistics on Van Halen....I've collated their hits together across records with DLR and Sammy, mostly using Wikipedia data (take that for what its worth). By combining record/single sales with radio hits (whichever was greater) here is a list of their hit songs with each singer, according to the particular single's success/highest chart position. I did not include any live version of a previous hit song (meaning no live version of VH doing Jump or one of their other hits...VH Doing any cover is fair game). I also did not include Van Halen III (not really fair to Gary, who only did one album). Most successful songs with Roth, 7 Albums: 1 - Jump 1 - Oh, Pretty Woman 2 - I’ll Wait 2 - Panama 3 - Dancing in the Street 12 - Mean Street 13 - Tattoo 13 - Unchained 15 - So This Is Love 15 - Dance The Night Away 17 - Where Have All The Good Times Gone 22 - Secrets 24 - Hot For Teacher 29 - Push Comes To Shove 33 - Little Guitars 36 - You Really Got Me 55 - And The Cradle Will Rock 84 - Runnin’ With The Devil 84 - Beautiful Girls Totals: 19 in the Top 100 10 in the Top 20 5 in the Top 10 Most successful songs with Hagar, 5 Albums, 1 Motion Picture Soundtrack: 1 - Why Can’t This Be Love 1 - Black and Blue 1 - When Its Love 1 - Poundcake 1 - Runaround 1 - Top Of The World 1 - Don’t Tell Me What Love Can Do 1 - Humans Being 1 - Wont Get Fooled Again 2 - Right Now 2 - Can’t Stop Loving You 2 - Finish What Ya Started 4 - Love Walks In 6 - Dreams 6 - Feels So Good 9 - Amsterdam 12 - Best Of Both Worlds 27 - Not Enough 33 - Summer Nights 19 in the Top 100 17 in the Top 20 16 in the Top 10

What genius thought that 1984 and the debut sold less than 5150? Shows you right away that atleast one person taking part in this interview doesn’t know their stuff at all. Like people have mentioned already 1984 and the debut from 78 both went fricken Diamond !! Over 10 million sold just in the United States and around 20 million world wide .. demolishes Van hagars sales

I totally was on board with 1984. Keyboards never scared me or bands stylistic changes either. Jump is one of the few overplayed songs that I don't get burnt out on. I guess while I'm a rocker, I like good pop stuff too.

I remember my mom going to Peaches to buy a couple tapes for my uncle, who was shot 6 times in '82 and was a quadriplegic. We were at MCV hospital with him during one of his stays and she bought me the 1984 tape and I sat looking out the window 12 floors up and rocked out to it with a walkman on.

I don't get all of these people, including Eddie Trunk, talking about their memory of dropping the needle on 1984 and being horrified to hear the keyboards of Jump. Jump had been on the radio in heavy rotation for about two weeks prior to the album's release, so it shouldn't have been a shock by that point at all, particularly for diehard fans who'd undoubtedly should have been glued to their radios awaiting the new Van Halen. My memory of my first time listening to 1984 was hearing the instrumental, 1984, which leads off the album, and saying, "OK, that's kind interesting and cool". Then, Jump came on, and I'd already heard it over 100 times because I'd recorded it off the radio. Then Panama came on, and that was the first real new song that I heard. It didn't blow me away, to be honest, though I thought it was fine. Top Jimmy struck me as interesting, but very different. Then, Drop Dead Legs played, and I absolutely loved it. Then, on side B, Hot For Teacher was badass and funny. I'll Wait was OK. Girl Gone Bad didn't blow me away the way it did a lot of VH fans, but House of Pain was amazing. So, it was really the last songs on each side that were my favorites.

You would expect a music expert/critic? to know that EVH played keyboards on “And The Cradle Will Rock” from “Women And Children First” and again on “Sunday Afternoon In The Park” from “Fair Warning” I mean seriously dude!!! Eddie Van Halen could play a Bavarian cheese flute and make it rock!!! RIP to the King!!!

Yeah I don't think the shift was as big as Eddie was making it seem, they had pop oriented songs on earlier albums too (Jamie's Cryin, Dance the night away, etc). Jump was just the most pop song they did in the DLR era

Yeah I love Panama, catchy hard rock (I've liked the singles since I was 8 in '92). I'm thinking Trunk and a lot of the callers just thought Hot for teacher and Panama got played out, and that Jump was too poppy

I went through a time when I hated Panama due to it being overplayed. I would turn it off when it came up on the radio or my mp3. One day, I just let it play and it hit me what a great song it is. I fell it love with the song again and still love it. As for Jump, I would rather never listen to it again.

If 5150 was anywhere near Diamond we’d never hear the end of it from Hagar. VH1 and 1984 combined demolish the whole Hagar era in sales.

If Trunk likes so much the earlier and deeper VH tracks and is fed Up with the use of keyboards in Jump, why does he like the Van Hagar era? He contradicts himself great here.

A couple of things as a fan. There's a myth Van Halen sold more records with Hagar. That's just not reality. Huge. Yes Selling more than with Roth? No. Also, I was young when 1984 came out but I can't imagine someone being so upset with "Jump" and "I"ll Wait" but there was stuff like "Dance the Night Away" on previous albums that weren't exactly "Unchained" or "Mean Streeet".Then the same people will who hate 1984 because of keyboards will rave about 5150 with even more keyboard! 11:25 "WHAT IS THIS???" It's a great riff to a great song recognised by anyone with a slightly more open mind than Trunk. You've had five albums of guitar brilliance (plus a sixth with 1984) and you can't handle some great keyboard work? Boo hoo. Yes, it's overplayed - enjoy the deeper cuts - it's overplayed because it's great. VH stood apart from their peers because of the SONGS - oh and great musicianship.

Trunk’s opinions about 1984 are disqualifying in general. 1984 is a masterpiece. Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain smoke every other hard rock band of the era, and Drop Dead Legs is absolutely unique in their catalog. No other band could’ve recorded that song. Two songs and a short instrumental do not mean an album is “keyboard dominated.”
