Fury is better. I used to love Fury and believe everything he said but as Eddie said he is a genius at pretending he doesn't care about the money yet he takes it all. If they fight I hope AJ wins because he doesn't claim to not care about the money like Fury does

In all fairness when Fury was 30 stone and talking about taking on Wilder and making a comeback, A LOT of people had A LOT of doubts. With good reason too. There's not many that could've predicted what a top level human being Tyson is. It takes something super special to come from those mental and physical lows and turn it around in the way he did.

It's not just what the event could generate, it's the fact that it would cost millions to put it on in the first place. There'd be a 6 figure electricity bill, let alone the million other separate bills for everything from promotion to staffing, lighting, security, traffic management and policing... Fury demanded the fight should be free because he knew it would be an impossible condition to fulfill. If he was really benevolent, he'd make sure the event generated as much money as humanly possible and then donate his share to charity, but then we know his form when it comes to promising that sort of thing don't we... 😉

Neither Fury or Wilder have any intention of fighting Joshua or Usyk. I agree it would be good to see Wilder fight some top people so we can access Fury's achievements in beating him (3 times really). My guess is Wilder isn't really that good and would lose to Joyce, Hrgovic etc. but I just don't know and obviously he is dangerous against anyone with his power. Fury needs to defend and unify belts for us to know how good he is - and there should be more pressure for him to do so without this assumption that Fury is the king and this delusion that he has cleared out the division

We all need to see all of these guys fight each other. It's not good enough, especially in heavyweight boxing, for us to have to guess who would beat who. Fury has looked very, very beatable many times throughout his career. Usyk is like nobody he's ever been within 500 feet of, and Fury has struggled with far inferior southpaws and been dropped by smaller men. Joshua is limited, but has a lot of power and a much more varied arsenal than Wilder, who is essentially defenceless once he's crowded and/or going backwards. Fury would be the betting favourite, but that doesn't mean it's cut and dried and we don't need to see the fights. This is the whole problem with boxing. There are half a dozen fighters who quite conceivably could beat Fury on a good night, but he probably won't fight any of them.

  • @DrRepper

Exactly this. I have loved to hate/hated to love boxing for most of my life. It is unique in sports in that these days we almost never know who the best really is because nobody HAS to fight anybody, especially as there are 4 world championship belts to choose from, so the top 4 or 5 inevitably never square off. In football everyone plays everyone else twice a season and whoever has been the most successful by the end of that season is the winner: it's there in black and white. Undeniable. In boxing, a sport in which one punch can turn a fight totally on its head (just ask AJ), you've normally got at least 3 or 4 guys in each division claiming to be indisputably the best on the basis of whatever alphabet strap/s they have and the number of cab drivers and binmen they've knocked over to defend them but no intention of fighting eachother to prove it once and for all. They're each inevitably enabled by a horde of casual manfans on social media claiming they can cite X, Y or Z piece of evidence to prove that their pet would beat someone else's without the need for them to actually get in the ring together. This is why these guys only fight once a year, and fighters like Fury can get away with claiming to be the best for a generation on the basis of two decent wins ("I just beat a guy who unified several belts and defended them for a decade, therefore his entire resume magically becomes mine without me having to do the legwork"). Not to single out Fury; they're all guilty to varying degrees, he just happens to be one of the more egregious examples, along with Wilder who's arguably even worse. Guys like Usyk, who actually clean out entire divisions (rather than waiting for someone else to do it then swooping in hoping for one big win) are vanishingly rare, largely because the money men who dictate their careers don't allow their cash cows to take that level of risk. It's infuriating. Even the sanctioning body rankings are bullshit and based almost purely on the exchange of cash stuffed envelopes rather than any objective points system. It fucking sucks. Boxing is crying out for a codified ranking structure/league system, with a WBSS-style tournament to settle the championship in each division, perhaps on a biannual or 4-yearly basis. Won't happen though.

Secondly, there's an undisputed fight on the line, it's madness to put a blocker on it by putting another fight in the way, and potentially another rematch clause. We'll never get the undisputed fight at that rate. I'm not an AJ fanboy, being Ukrainian I'm more an Usyk fan, but that's beside the point. Why do Fury fans seem intent on him not having to fight anyone? All I see from Fury fans is "Fury would beat all these other fighters so there's no point him actually fighting them". Fact is Fury will struggle against Usyk and all his fans that have a braincell in their heads (not many) know it. That's why they want as many obstacles in place as they can.

Hearn and AJ should've bitten his hand off at that point as AJ isn't relevant after losing to a cruiserweight twice and an out of shape Ruiz Junior. The only reason he won the rematch was Ruiz Junior was even more out of shape at that point as he admitted he just partied for ages. Truth is, AJ knows Fury is better than him now, he's scared to lose against him and wants a few easy wins first as one more loss would probably mean retirement
