Ironically, money and discontent is pretty much the only way a true base-line quality of life "socialist" utopia could work, if yes you get guaranteed food and shelter, but the food has to taste bad, and the housing has to be annoying in some way. @@AiluridaeAureus exactly. There has to be some kind of drive for growth that doesn’t mean some have to starve so you can stay rich. Both are bad and id do a lot More to stop one form existing than the other. You can pay for taste, which is fine because I barely taste anything and it literally has no effect on whether I’ll be able to buy the room my bed is in next month, for the 16th time. Unhoused and unfed people are in more objective suffering than anyone who only Lacks good tasting food and architectural design within their own personal taste. I’d never be convinced that one society isn’t worse for that reason. So if I had no other option I’d choose socialism. Instead I’d rather just provide those who come after me to exist how they choose. I don’t make them work for anything and if they want to do work for anything then they will. Unless scarcity is literally the only possible reason people would want to take the time to do long term shit, I just don’t think there’s a way you can stop progress in any direction no matter what it’s towards. We have a drive to survive, forcing us to stay unified in every way we don’t have to be is unrealistic and gets harder as time goes on. So eventually everything will change, so just be sensible, provide for those who come into existence with your power generation or give them the ability to generate their own, and let societies surrounded by different purposes exist by virtue of being the first one to get there. @@patrickaycock3655 Yes. A friend of mine is bodily severly limited, but it always pays to be patient and listen to what he thinks and says. I respect his opinion. world view and humor very much. That being said, if you are have the chance to improve the way you speak (and I'm not talking about cute or funny or whatever little speech impediments) you should absolutely do so as well as possible. Maybe you want to make new friends or anticipate the people who invest and take their time to listen even though it can be tiring - it's nothing but a positive to make it easier for them. And for yourself as well, as it may speed and lighten up conversations, and also strenghten your self confidence. @Home Tennis Practice: I am not an expert on stuttering at all and do not know anyone who does. I just know it can be caused by a lot of things, there are even many types of it, and usually stress and nervousness is somehow involved. You seem to be quite young, so don't rush and stress yourself. I don't know your parents, but I can imagine they don't want "to fix you" but one aspect of your behaviour that they know can become or already is a difficulty in life. Whatever therapeutical measures they come up with may be helpful, may make things worse, may just be a pain in the ass, - like speaking in front of an audience is definitely something most of us find awkward and tough. I do like that you think into the direction of "fixing yourself" as opposed to feel pressured into it. I would recommend to feel inside and see in which direction you want to develop and work on that, and also convey how you feel about that. Getting a grip on stuttering is definitely something positive. Reaching out to people is definitly something positive, too, especially if you wish for conversation and interchange with others - so, nice to see your comment here! :)

Comrade Dan while certainly lacking when judged by later moral standards, the Romans considered him one of the “Five Good Emperors” and gave him the title optimus princeps (best prince/best ruler) for his somewhat mythologized virtue. It is that picture of Trajan as symbol of when the Empire was at its territorial peak and the Emperors ruled “fairly” (according to Roman ideas of jurisprudence), and built great public works for all the people of Rome to enjoy that the phrase is calling back to, not the more nuanced reality. So the sentiment is still good, even though Trajan wasn’t so much.

I think my favorite fictional currency in a sci fi setting was Bottlecaps in the Fallout Games. :) credits in mass effect just wasn't original. mind you, I think the volus who administer mass effect's galactic economy are awesome little buggers for a species so tubby. but the currency name isn't even all that original. also one more way in which star trek actually does have money, albeit a small case study, is that the crew of voyager gets a certain allotment of replicator rations and holodeck hours a week. And they often trade the former or invite friends to join them in the latter. If the holodeck time was taken out of the hosting crew member's allotment, it could be a lot like treating someone to dinner. As far as replicator rations went, they were as much for stuff as food. And if you used them all up making something off to the mess hall with you; where Neelix's home cooking and exotic ingredient choices save wear and tear on the replicators /and/ act as a sufficient deterrent against waste.

Will smarter people really lead to a higher Dunbar's number? It could just as easily stay exactly the same. While smarter people means more mental effort to dedicate to tracking interpersonal relationships, it also means more complex interpersonal relationships. This can often be seen in societies of nobilities in secure periods in history (Heian-period Japan, British Landed Gentry) where the rules of etiquette and relaitonships become extremely complex when people have little else to devote their time to. Improving the memory of the average person also raises the standard for what the average person is expected to recall about their close friends and relatives.

Energy (or heat energy) Credits seems like an eventual end point.of currency, if we assume super automation and AI, as the amount of work that can be done, even if automated, will be limited by that energy (dissipation) capacity. And so each person gets an amount of energy credits they can spend. And just think of a virtual world where you can literally jockey for the position of king of the world, while shooting lasers and fireballs at other people, without fear of actually killing them. So much more interesting than the relative mundanity of real life. But those worlds would require processing power, which produces heat. So obviously, a virtual world would have to charge their users energy credits. Which would then imply that it is going to be more of a last ditch effort to make true AI within the game, if they could allow the players (who are also payers) to effectively generate that content for them, without them running even more on their energy budgets. However, Energy Credits would be pretty weird. Just because you spent your energy credits (or gave them to someone else) doesn't actually remove them from the "economy," unless your energy usage was ultimately recorded and collected by a more or less central authority. (Less in that using electricity might actually sap directly from your "bank" account, rather than passing through anyone's hands. Just gone - not traded - not taxed. Poof.) This is a problem because even though someone paid you energy credits, if they aren't collected and destroyed when spent on energy, then you will have something like inflation where the actual value of an energy credit goes down But let's assume that such collection and removal of the credits would be infeasible. Well then, we could see something like a "temporary" currency. (This isn't really a currency, as it doesn't really hold value, but we are talking about a society where heat dissipation is the cap on their activity. Value probably isn't all too necessary to hold) But thing is, if your bill is going to expire on April second, who would ever accept it on April first? So an issuer of temporary currency like this would have to preempt this eventual valuelessness of the currency, and instead of setting a hard timer on when it's invalid, the "worth" of the issued currency is a function of time since issuance and the face value of the bill. Say, every unit of time that passes, it's worth half as much as in the previous unit (month, years, whatever).Eventually the cost of simply transferring the old credits is greater than just tossing it aside. Of course, if collecting the credits is somehow impossible with a purely digital economy, it's as simple as having bank accounts reduced by half every [time period].

The notion of energy “credits” isn’t new and is still riddled with holes. The fundamental failure of energy credits based on actual energy is that the energy itself has an inherent value but when used is consumed, and can be increased by increasing production beyond increased demand. Thus the use of energy reduces the money supply, including the creation of new units of the money supply. Thus it would inevitably shift to a fiat currency not connected to energy anymore. There are deeper and more issues with the notion but that is a good start.

I feel like "post-scarcity" is always relative. Here's what I mean by this. The way we typically imagine four dimensions is to first think about what our three-dimensional world would be like for a two-dimensional being; we then assume that a four-dimensional world would look similar to us who live in three dimensions. In the same way, a good way to think about the future is to imagine what the present looks like to people in the past. For the vast majority of human history, poverty was a universal condition. To someone living two hundred years ago, ours would look like a post-scarcity society. Supermarkets would be a glimpse of heaven for those who had to grow their own food or pay over the odds with unreliable traders for a limited set of options. Modern healthcare would be a miracle to people from a time when life expectancy was about thirty. Even notions like democracy would be revelatory to those used to living under tyrannical kings. Truly, they would think, we are living in the best of all possible worlds. But we are not, of course. Even in the west, homelessness and food poverty still exist. But, even aside from the issues around inequality, modernity promises more and therefore we *expect* more. Capitalism has raised the living standards of everyone, but (in addition to issues of inequality) it has concomittantly raised standards in the other sense of the word - ie what people are satisfied with. Would a future "post-scarcity" be similar? If we could travel forward to it, then, after the initial culture shock, we'd be amazed, and likewise think we were living in paradise. Might not be the same for the natives, though.

@@michaelstodovski2219 Except what is profitable is actually a pretty good measure of what is beneficial. Profitability is, essentially, how willing people are to pay for something. Nobody made a profit doing stuff everyone else considered useless. You give a government money to invest in a specific goal, such as a covid-19 vaccine, and in that case I will concede they will probably outperform the private sector just because they've got access to more money and don't have to worry about competition (although, of course, they would still involve the private sector in their supply chain). But normally the imperatives are not so clear. You tell them to invest in "technology" and they will have no idea what to do. The private sector has the capacity to invest in hundreds of ideas, most of which fail, and discard the useless ones. It also uses price signal mechanisms to determine much quicker than a government (or at least a government opposed to capitalism) could which ideas are and are not worth continuing. State spending has led to some amazing breakthroughs. It put a man on the moon. No private company would have done that. But equally, the reason the space race wasn't profitable was because it did sod all to raise living standards on either side of the Iron Curtain and was done basically as Cold War propaganda, for each side to flex their muscles and show that their system was better than the other one. (Governments have also undertaken more "useful" grand projects, by the way. A good example might be the Human Genome Project, which started a still-ongoing medical revolution. But here, because it was more immediately useful to real people, the private sector was far more willing to get involved. In fact the HGP was initially a race between a publicly-funded company and a private one called Genentech, until they realised they were better off working together and the government bought Genentech out.) Basically, if I wanted to achieve one specific breakthrough, I'd probably ask a government or supragovernmental body. If I wanted to raise living standards but had no idea how that should be done, I'd rely on a free market. (I'd still want the government to redistribute, of course. Inequality is bad in its own right of course, but it's also a drag on growth if most people can't afford to buy better goods, because then the profit motive for making them disappears.) Okay, that turned into a very long post - because it is more complicated than "private good, public bad." But on the whole it is most certainly the case that free markets have had the larger influence on the growth in living standards, and even where governments have achieved progress they have done so in partnership with the private sector or with taxes raised from private-sector money.

This is obviously untrue as we see them eating in restaurants and buying things. To suggest that a restaurant doesn't want money, just personal satisfaction, must extend that to their employees and suppliers. It's absurd to say the people who make their dishes, supply their food (and all their employees and suppliers) and haul off their garbage are also in it for the fun of it. I've even seen fans suggest that the scene in Star Trek IV where Kirk has no money for pizza, and agrees with his 20th century companion that they don't use money in the future proves something. It is obviously a joke on a par with "I left my wallet in my other pants". Unless the Federation is shown as completely cut off from the outside world there us some kind of economy and payment system.

Surf TrekTonics there are episodes in STNG and DS9 which indicate that the alleged post-scarcity from the replicator is not universal within the Federation. We have times where within the Federation there are scarcity issues resolved by trade. When you dig deeper it isn’t the Federation, but just Earth, that has the alleged utopia.

Evolved past? Economies are a relatively new invention, created to solve the problems of complexity and unequal conditions. The "economy going" is people trading things of value, be that goods, services, or raw value (money), for things they value more. It isn't some merry-go-round we spin for the hell of it; it's the means by which finite resources are distributed.

First of all: congratulations on getting married! A point of criticism for this video: it does not adress the concept of ownership and positions itself rather firmly in a capitalistic framework- something which really cannot be taken for granted, and really undercuts the realism of the predictions in this video. You, in my opinion correctly, presuppose the usefulness of currency in a future economy. Now whether there is an actual need for it is debatable, but lets assume that even if it isn't needed it at least smoothes things over. The existence of currency directly puts power in those that have a lot of it, and this has consequences if it is allowed to accumilate, and if you do not adress ownership, it is and that causes major issues for a lot of these predictions. In your examples: if people still rent their homes, regardless of any UBI, that means someone *owns* that home and wealth is allowed to accumilate in the hands of the landlord, probably to obscene degrees if today's world is anything to go by. If such a person of means decides to scrape together enough currency to buy up or construct part of the local dyson swarm, does that then technically allow that person of means to turn *off* that power under their agency and create artificial scarcity? Or leverage it against a populace for influence? How do you keep money out of politics when only a select few (those who own the means of production, be they land to build homes on, O'neil cylinders to live in or physical robots and/or their AI) can accumilate money while the vast majority of people is essentially disenfranchised out of similar power by virtue of their being next to no jobs? This would allow very few people, whose interests are alligned directly against the majority of the population, to excert an obscene amount of pressure and influence on society. So when you ask 'what would people even spend their money on?' well, they'd probably save it up to purchase those means of production so that they are no longer dependant on vulnerable centralized programs like a UBI or the overlordship of their neighbourhood Dyson swarm mogul. But when we're talking scales like the ones described in this video, that gap is nigh unclosable. To bring this to a point: in a world where this accumilation of wealth and the creation of false scarcity is essentially a given, it is in our current time, things like a UBI would be very unlikely because it would go against the interests of the moneyed class to have the populace by remotely independent of them- and it would certainly not be in their interests to allow for easy satisfaction of the heirarchy of needs. A classic real world example is how in the US healthcare is often tied to your employment rather than something you control as an individual: it makes you extremely dependent on your employer. Not even the most basic security of your health, pretty low on the Maslow hierarchy, is safe unless it is explicitely protected. This pattern will only increase in the future unless it is made impossible. TL;DR In an economy such where private ownership of the means of production is still possible to any significant degree, it *will* lead to massive inequality and will undercut the cushy, nigh-post-scarcity economy you describe, make it impossible even. I felt that was missing from the video. I know this channel doesn't usually delve into politics, but you really can't seperate it from economics. Have a nice honeymoon!

Good points. I really do believe the future will be bright but these issues must be thought about. Especially with life extension, or effective immortality, our lives become one long unending game of Monopoly. No restarts of the game. What are the leveling mechanisms, if any? Should there be? Should limits be placed on an entity's accumulation of power? How are new players to the system treated/empowered?

thanks .. i might watch it tomorrow again and add some thoughts (it's a pain since my english is mediocre).. i'm a long time fan of this channel, but this episode has a lot of logical flaws and just.. naivety i mean it's all very speculative in any case.. for my part i'm very sure that there will be no meaningful private economy or ownership .. i think it can still be a good living for everyone just because material wellbeing for a couple of billion (useless) people will just be no big deal.. i guess i would speculate that there is a small class of people that owns the machines and everyone else who lives of there good will about currency: if i'm wrong and there will be a meaningful degree of capitalism, than money is the way how the state collects its share via taxes. that would be the main reason for having currency in the future.. i mean real money-currency .. on the lover level of the common folk they can trade in bitcoins or whatever they like to exchange there meaningless little posessions... yea.. i need sleep

We could grant everyone a certain amount of capital as a birthright in a hypothetical post-scarcity society. If everyone is self-sufficient by default, then all transactions truly are voluntary. I don't think we're going to get there via UBI, though, because of the flaws you mentioned.

Honestly it’s frustrating listening to non Marxist economics. It just seems like blind speculation about how things work currently now. You don’t seem to know what a commodity is and that a universal medium is not necessarily a form of money. And money as it exists is a universal equivalent among commodities, it’s value right now is determined on fiat, which is relative to the value of commodities in the market which is determined by socially necessary labor time. I’d be happy to come and have a chat to talk about the Marxist perspective and the prospects of future economic models.

Growing up with Star Trek, I've always thought that mankind would evolve to a society where people wouldn't work for money anymore, but rather towards improving themselves and society as a whole all while travelling the galaxy in search of "strange new worlds, and seeking out new life and new civilizations" in starships. :) But if we are to maintain a monetary system, I feel it would eventually move to a one world currency system of some sort; but such a thing probably won't happen until 100 years or so into the future. As for your marriage(if it's still gonna take place. I know you narrated for this video months ago before the COVID-19 pandemic hit), CONGRATULATIONS; and all the best to you and your wife. :)
