Interstellar Trade & Cyclers

Ғылым және технология

Establishing Interstellar Trade and Commerce in the future will require an entirely new approach to moving cargo, as years if not centuries might pass for shipments to arrive by even the fastest spaceships, but may be aided by the use of vast interstellar Cycler Castles traveling on century long trade routes.

"Then there was the time that cycler came through the system and missed their turn. 300,000 souls flung off into deep space, never to return. No way for us to rescue them all. Even with maximum effort by the fleet, at best we'd be able to give them some extra supplies and bring back a small number. We figure they'll last a few centuries before their energy runs out, and that'll be it for them. I imagine in the meantime they may actually build a whole religion around their predicament."

Imagining the insufferable wine snobs of the future brings me a surprising amount of joy. In a couple thousand years, someone on a station around Alpha Centauri is going to grow some grapes, and make some wine, and it might even be pretty good wine. And they're going to decide to send it back to Earth, because a bunch of people want to send something back, and sending a ship at low speed just for sentimental value, a time capsule of a sort, isn't that expensive when we're sending much bigger ships onward and outward for more exploration and more new settlements. So they might as well. And it takes its time, and it arrives, and is all the more valuable for it because it is one of the first things to be sent back. And someone is going to enjoy that bottle of wine, probably someone with more money than they've earned, or someone who got lucky and won the lottery after a bunch of people agreed to just randomly choose who got it. But then there are the more day to day wine sharings that are enabled by technology. Some O'Niell cylinder at Alpha Centauri has an equipment malfunction that changes the soil just slightly and unexpectedly makes a great vintage, and they send the data from the routine soil samples along with a log of the light conditions, irrigation protocol, gravity magnitude, etc., and send it in the regular broadcast to other star systems. Sure it takes years to arrive, even decades for far flung settlements, but then they can configure a greenhouse to match the conditions, and grow their own grapes, and make their own version of the wine, making it cheaply enough for everyone to enjoy. It would become routine, every day you get the 5 year old news, discoveries, and fashions from AC, and at the same time, AC gets the 5 year old news, discoveries, and fashions from Earth. That is something that is going to be very interesting.

The Cycler castle is a fascinating concept. I'm thinking of writing a space-based city-state/micro-nation that's a massive trade centre (basically mobile space Singapore) who goes around the solar system for trade reasons, (is that how a cycler works?) Thanks, Isaac for giving sci-fi nerds like me more ideas to play with.

Almost! A cycler is on a fixed Hohman orbit. The first candidate routes would be likely to link Venus, Earth and Mars in a big lazy orbit. Two such vessels on opposing legs could move a lot of people and materials. I could imagine an orbital ring developing around Venus supporting gas harvesting and export to Mars, another around Earth supporting and feeding billions and acting as the gateway to interstellar travel, and a third at Mars that would be home to most of the Red Planet’s population, with heavy industries planetside. Your idea sounds good, I hope you develop it!

The Economist Paul Krugman once wrote a paper on the effect of time dilation on calculating interest rates for goods being shipped at a high enough fraction of light speed. While he originally did it for his own amusement, he did a through enough job that he eventually went ahead and had it published and peer reviewed.

Hearing that analogy about these cycler castles being akin to early colonial-era sailboats riding the trade winds, and transporting cargo throughout the trade route, got me thinking about something similar more down-to-earth: What if there were floating trade ports/citadels in Earth's oceans that travel slowly but steadily on the trade winds, delivering their bulk goods slowly, but cheaply?

While a galaxy filled with rivers of light and Cycler Castles is beyond amazing, I'm curious about the possibility of a galactic-scale orbital ring structure. To get a feel for how much mass such a thing would require, if it were simply a continuous tube of material with a mass density of 10,000 kg/m^3 and it spanned 60,000 lightyears in diameter, then a tube with a 10 kilometer cross-sectional radius would require "only" around half a million Sun's worth of mass, while a half kilometer cross-sectional radius would require only 5 Sun's worth of mass!

DOWN WITH CAPITALISM . Some upset and angry workers voted for Trump in 2016. They wondered whether a Trump/GOP government would deliver on its promises to “make America great again” by reversing the long decline of its working class majority. By now it should be clear that Trump’s promises may be more, louder and extreme, but they too have been broken. Inequality has gotten worse, government failure to prepare for or contain Covid-19 is catastrophic, and managing capitalism’s 2020 crash is another gross exercise in unjust economics. The last 40 years show that expecting protection or support for labor’s economic well-being from Republicans or Democrats is a tragic mistake. Labor leaders writing protest op-eds in newspapers will not work. Making some protest remarks while endorsing yet another Democratic Party ticket just repeats past mistakes. US capitalism’s decline continues as competing economies rise (China, the European Union, the BRICS countries, and so on). The rich in the US use their wealth to grab and hold everything they can amidst decline. Without a changed strategy, working class conditions will be taken down with and by the system’s decline. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ What the working class can do is move into the streets to stop “business as usual” until steps are taken to reverse the last 40 years’ redistribution of wealth. Workers must also stop endorsing and voting for candidates who do not serve their interests. Nothing would better show workers’ seriousness about reversing the last 40 years than building a new labor-based political party to change US politics. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

That the same distance/time problem that created them could undo them?

Repeatedly picking up materials, and as it travels, processing them, and then creating consumer products to unload along the way. Not sure what it would carry for the return trip, aside from products needed by material sources. Perhaps keep a small surplus of products and have a "retail store" of sorts on the ship, for anyone in range to dock and shop at. Cyclerco Wholesale Corporation (tm). 😁

One way to somewhat minimize that would be to have human checks for operations exceeding a certain amount of matter/resources in a certain amount of time, or to have parts of the system automated but the connection be done by a human (i.e. harvesting the raw resources automatically, then a human has to allow them to enter the foil making. That way, they would need periodical supervision. Which, while costly, would be a much lower cost than people might think. Especially since there will likely already be groups in charge of checking for signs of hijacking or hacking.

Cyro sleep. We can do it, if capitalism does not kill us all first.

I have been thinking about a thing which perhaps you somehow can answer(if so please do) Halting problem: Given Turing Machine M, you can not (generally) predict whether it will halt or not. Full-on determinism: Given state of the universe S, you can predict all future states. These two can't both be true, since if you can predict all future states, you can predict whether a machine M(assuming it can exist in/as part of the universe) will halt, since halting/not halting is one of the future states you can derive. Possible criticism I immediately came up with is: Turing machines can't be part of the universe, since they require an infinite tape to work with. Possible counter-criticism I immediately came up with is: Dark energy is an infinite source of (albeit useless) energy, thus could potentially be turned into an infinite source of matter, thus an infinite tape.

A break in the network due to societal problems at just one system could have disastrous consequences. The mind boggles at imagining an attempt to react and compensate for a some breakdown along the circuit while travelling 20%c. But, ah, never mind. Size 10 billion miles radius, around the sun far beyond pluto, thus you have a way of catching a castle incoming at roaring speed. It can then be released later in any direction, including right back again at no energy loss. It is an energy bank, so it would be a project to get it up to speed with solar energy, but we do have a star for that. There would be ways to transfer locally in light shuttles off that carousel to smaller slower rings. Something for the 22nd century I suppose, but no well dressed star should be without one.

Combining data from multiple colony's telescopes creates a telescope with light-year scale aperture. BTW: That means a culture that operates with century-scale planning. - Interstellar trade of materials or manufactured objects makes no sense. There is nothing that cannot be duplicated with local materials. So the thing of value would be the specifications enabling the duplication. That information can be via a photon beam.
