I wish ford would make a v8 ecoboost with more displacement and start putting them in the super duty line of trucks. The 3.5s seem to tow pretty good so a v8 ought to be a beast.

It sounds like a strangled sports car motor. Which it effectively is - the engine also used in the Ford GT, but detuned for torque. How reliable is the Ecoboost - assuming proper maintenance? An owner I met had one in his work truck, he was on his second Ecoboost truck, and he said that they lasted quite a bit better than his former truck, a Chevy with an LS. It just seems counter-intuitive that pushing the hell out of a small engine lasts better than letting a big engine loaf.

I think if you beat the hell out of it at all times, Weight wise, the v8 is better, but the v8 is harder on itself over time just cruising vs any turbo

LS/new LT GM V8s and the Chrysler 5.7/6.4 Hemis last longer if you beat on them or get cylinder deactivation turned off.

It’s a small engine that breathes well, and it has a forged bottom end and great oiling.

I have an 2011 SHO with the 3.5 ecoboost in it and it has been a very reliable engine. It has been re-tuned for the last 40k miles - and has seen probably 150 drag strip passes, 12-14 autocross events, and goes on at least two "cruises" a year where I beat on it pretty hard. The only issues to date that I have had (it currently has ~85k miles on it) have been a faulty oil pressure sender (10 minute job, 15 dollar part) and I did injectors on it (the '10-12 model years have a known issue with the stock injectors.) other than that it has never went wrong and I have been quite happy with the car. I figure over ten years of regular abuse that is a more than acceptable reliability. I did the injectors myself (wasn't too hard) and that cost me an afternoon and about ~600 in parts. As far as how it sounds - I have the stock exhaust on it - and removed the rear two mufflers and the car sounds pretty good. Sounds way better than the truck in this video - but lets be real - 90% of anything straight piped sounds like garbage.

@@theangrymarmot8336 Sounds good - although, granted, you're using it as a performance car engine in a performance car, not as a truck engine in a truck. You're hauling about half-a-ton less weight than a truck to start with, not typically pulling a trailer with a small bulldozer or a big ATV that adds another ton or two, and you don't ask any more of it than that it deliver when you put your foot in it. In other words, you're playing to exactly the strength of a smallish turbo engine - short bursts at full-throttle, and allowed to rev - rather than long periods at 3/4 of full-power, and maybe expected to lug like a diesel.
