Eco India: Meet the artisans who are reviving the traditional, eco-friendly art of Batik printing

Every week, Eco India brings you stories of innovations from across India and Europe, and the people who make them possible. Our top story this week looks at how the handloom makers in Gujarat are shunning the use of cheaper, synthetic alternatives and choosing to make their production process organic.

I'm still slightly worried about it sustaining itself amidst desertification. Because printing, of any kind, is still a water intensive process....till we think of one which isn't..the water crisis concerns don't go away with the simple switch to vegetables dyes even if it is better.

I'm aware that this is a eco friendly option, and that the water can go back to the groundwater table without hiccups. Their supply should be transparent and accountable, in the sense that they know where the raw material is coming from, what it is made and who the supplier is. As for production, the brand should be aware of who is making what and whether they are being paid a fair wage. Also, eco-friendly brands always acknowledge and encourage handmade crafts and artisans work. They also opt for upcycling their textiles for garment. In short, genuine eco-friendly brands are always transparent about their design and making process.

@@rohandekate54 There may be indicators that says the brand uses organic material such as 100% organic cotton but it doesn't mean that brand is wholely eco-friendly. Like I mentioned above, if there is transparency and accountability at all steps of supply and production of the brand, it can be considered as eco-friendly. Although, there are certain initiatives being started where the name of the maker is being attached to the clothes they made. Like in handloom sarees such as the brand Ethicus does. As for the names of brands whose design philosophy is based on sustainable/eco fashion, there are brands like Everlane, Good on you, and Indian brands like Indigene, 11:11, Ethicus, Upasana, Doodlage, No nasties, Brown Boy, to name a few.
