Eco India: Meet the farmers who are preserving India's heirloom rice varieties one seed at a time

Every week, Eco India brings you stories that inspire to build a cleaner, greener and better tomorrow. We travelled to Kerala to look at how the need to conserve traditional varieties of paddy became a people’s movement to revive rice culture and create sustainable rice ecosystems.

This is such an important thing. Preserving seed varieties is crucial for our food systems. The big agricultural industries want to make only their seed varieties, resistant to fertilizers and pesticides which are also manufactured by them, to be used everywhere. Local seed varieties are not only adaptive but also more sustainable.

A goldmine of traditional agricultural information!! I hope ALL of it has been PROPERLY recorded and other farmers have been encouraged and trained. It's very sad that our farmers receive little to no recognition and most remain poor, exploited and discriminated against. They are the TRUE "sons/daughters of the soil". 🙏🕉🙏

Since the value of money/rupee has not reflected the value we should have given to our planet (including extracting crude oil from earth), my favorite part of this video is the farmer saying seeds should be traded, not sold for money.

There are few State Government institutes & employees who are spontaneously doing the preservation of local varieties of paddy seed. In this aspect Agriculture Training Center (ATC), Fulia under Govt. of West Bengal & Anupam Paul, Asst. Director of Agriculture at that training center is doing tremendous work with the help of local farmers.

Why do you want the government to do everything. This reliance on government for every single issue is what empowers corrupt leaders to get into positions of power. Private enterprise trying to figure out a new business model out of things a lot of people are not really aware about is a sign of development.

our books teach us what a great step green revolution was towards achieving food security.....but you will not find many people talk about its long term consequences. In my opinion green revolution is the single largest reason for farm distress in India today. it has almost destroyed our traditional farming methods which were renewable and sustainable. In my view if India wants to effectively tackle air, water and land pollution , we should turn and look towards our farmers.

I worked as doctor in Wayanad for almost 3-4 years.... earlier there were no cancer patients.but if you look at the statistics , every house is now grieving with that deadly disease. Why ? Because the main income is through agriculture. Earlier it was a dense forest with rain every half an hour through out the year. Now the rains are occurring twice or thrice in a year.the ground water levels are depleting and whatever the water is present , it's filled with those pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, weedicides. Pepper , ginger , banana are major ones. I had an asthmatic patient , and his son is a ginger farmer. He said that they never consume the ginger they cultivated . Because it's filled with heavy pesticides etc chemicals.i was really shocked at their ignorance. He said they are exporting it to neighbouring states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and andhra.
