    Small recipes are FAR less stressful - happy to help :) As far as Castor oil is concerned, I would not recommend leaving it out. I use it in almost all of my soap recipes because it's the only oil that contains ricinoleic acid. It's a powerful lathering component that ensures strong bubbles!

    Hi! Loved your recipe and really enjoyed the process of making my first batch of soap! One question I have is that after taking the soap bars of our my mold, they had a strong shea butter smell. I did notice that my shea butter had a very strong smell as i was putting it in my mix and also the bottom half of my shea butter container was slightly darker than the top, so maybe the strong smell is from the shea butter going bad? (i just bought it, so its unfortunate if its already gone bad!)

  • @Lovelygreens

    It sounds like you have a container of unrefined shea butter. It has that characteristic scent and to avoid it, use refined shea. It loses all scent once it's been cleaned in the refining process.

  • @Lovelygreens

    The amount depends on the essential oil, but you can add many of the common ones at 3% by weight of an entire soap recipe. That's usually about 3 teaspoons of essential oil, that you stir in after the soap comes to trace (thickens). More on using essential oil in soap is here: lovelygreens.com/make-soap-with-essential-oils/

    I’m just going to try soap making. I’ve such issues with soaps due to eczema & psoriasis. I can’t use commercial soaps at all but some handcrafted soaps have been fine What I’m finding in almost all soap recipes is the use of both shea & coconut oil. I absolutely can’t use either of those on my skin. Do you know an alternative ? Do I have to use any solid fat at all ? The oils that my skin can handle are almond, sunflower, safflower, grape seed & at times olive oil. Could I just use any of these in combination ? I’m excited to try soap making but would like to end up with a product I can use 🥰

  • @Lovelygreens

    @Lovelygreens

    Hi Roxie, the oils you use in soap recipes are chemically changed into soap. That means that they're not the same as they once were. So if you're talking about having issues with a particular oil on your skin, you'll likely have no issues with soap made with that oil.

    Just one question, if i wanted to add essential oil, would it be 2% of total oils weight?

  • @Lovelygreens

    @Lovelygreens

    3 жыл бұрын

    It depends on the essential oil. Some you can only add in lower quantities since they contain natural compounds that in concentrated amounts can be skin irritants. Others you can add more of, but again, need to adhere to guidelines per specific type of essential oil. You also should not use more than the highest usage rate for an essential oil total when working with blends. For example, clary sage essential oil can be used in soap at 2% of the total recipe. Lavender essential oil can be used at up to 3%. If you wanted to create a blend, the total amount of essential oil you can use in the recipe would be 3% by weight. You could use up to 2% of clary sage and the rest (the remaining 1%) could be lavender. I base my usage rates on what I am legally permitted to put into soap commercially in the UK/European Union and further information on other essential oils and their rates of usage are over here: lovelygreens.com/make-soap-with-essential-oils/

    you say to wait for 2 days ( you can wait for 7 hrs than you can take it out of mold ( dont need to put it in fridge ( fridge I feel is a damp place and messes up your soap ( it gets wet and icky

    After two days saponification is 99% complete and the soap is much safer to handle. Absolutely put in the fridge if you want to avoid partial gel discolouration. Cooling in fridge does not mess up soap at all.

    Hi Tanya... I'm a newbie. I made few soaps but somehow they dissolve very fast ( they does last for longer period, eg. 200 gms soap is used by 1 person, it lasts only for 3-4 day). Whay can be the reason for same. What can be added to soap for long lasting?

    hi - i hope you can give me a clue for this wee problem - i made your rose geranium and lavender soap recipe - it is amazing to work with - but - i find it overheats - i end up with rather big winkles on the surface - thats what another soaper told me was the problem - so what do i do??? - i love your soap recipes - thanks - PS - i am not giving up - did it overheat because i covered it and it was a stinking hot day/night it stayed around 87 degs F all day and most of the night - do you wrap them every time - thats about all i can think for the reason of the soap overheating - one of them - i did a couple - i added a slice of soap dough lemon i had made - well it slightly wrinkled but cracked around the edge of the lemon slice - i have tried to figure this out but thats all i can think of as to why it overheated - any ideas on what i did wrong will gratefully be received - thanks again

    Floral essential oils trace more quickly so you have to work fast after adding them and maybe just hand stir them in rather than blending x

    Hello, and sorry to hear of your wrinkly soap -- I suspect that what you have is called 'Alien Brains'. I don't know who created that term but it's certainly descriptive! Okay, when we insulate our soap, it's under the assumption that the soaping area is room temperature. Insulating in a wooden box liner, or in the oven, is needed to ensure that the outer edges of the soap gel along with the middle. However, if it's sweltering (87F!) then you do not need to insulate your soap. Make the recipe, as usual, pour it into a mold, but do not cover it. The residual heat of the soap will be enough to force all of the soap to gel. If it's warmer than room temperature but not quite as hot, you can put the mold in a cold oven and leave it there overnight.

    This may be a silly question but this recipe makes 454g of soap. If I wanted to make a batch double that would I simply just double everything? including the amount of lye?

    Not silly at all :) Yes, that's all you need to do. Double the amounts of everything and use a larger mold(s)

    All real natural soap, including every one you've ever used, is made with lye. There's zero lye left in the soap afterwards though thanks to chemistry. This is one of the most eco-friendly natural soap recipes you'll find 👌🧼

    when do you use emulsifiers? is it a cold press vs hot press thing, or just personal taste? I saw you used it for one recipe, maybe the carrot soap...? thanks in advance.

    The ingredients emulsify (verb) when blended with the immersion blender. An emulsifier (ingredient) is not added. Those are mainly used for creams and moisturizers.

    @@Lovelygreens Thank you. I glanced through your videos that I have currently watched and realize that it must have been when you made chamomile lotion that you used the emulsifier wax. I was confused for a bit. Thanks again. Great channel. I just recently got into using hand crafted soaps. I stopped using the mainstream brands all together. I'm planning on trying to make the carrot soap recipe soon. I made soap once in a chemistry class in college, but that was a log time ago, and we weren't allowed to take it home. Is it possible to put the carrots in a juicer, and just use the juice, instead of sivving the pulp? Also, what about using real liquidy vegetables, like cucumbers. I always love the smell of cilantro and cucumber. I imagine it would be similar to using aloe vera? Thanks again!
