    I really really like this method of soap making it brings back childhood memories. My grandma used to make hot process soap but not in a slow cooker. When she made soap it was a family event. She used a large black pot placed over a fire. She made old school lye soap and large batches for the family and her friends.

As long as I've been soaping, 3+ years(this time round), I've been *trying* cp, failing tremendously, then going back and rescuing the ingredients by rebatching with hot processing! I've not been properly identifying the stages! I'd been taking the stage of "light trace" as "medium"! But it took *you* demonstrating🤪🤫, for me to finally clue in! Thankyou!🥳💞 and yet I've watched *SO MANY VIDEOS!!!!*, I still cant believe I've been making such an amateur mistake for so MANY times, over so many batches!!!🤪🥳🤔

    Hi Anne, what I'd suggest is that you make a pure tallow soap recipe instead. You can make most any soap recipe using the hot process method. Just ensure that the water amount used is 3x the lye amount by weight. Here's a recent tallow soap recipe I shared: lovelygreens.com/simple-tallow-soap-recipe/

    I can tell you are more of a cold process soaper!! You know you don't need to cool the lye solution with hot process soap? you only do that with cold process. I just dissolve lye and chuck it in the melted oils, absolutely not necessary. You also don't need to go in at an angle with the stick blender as you are cooking soap that is another CP tip, but not for HP as you are stirring it whilst it cooks a few times. You also don't need to cool it down before adding yoghurt and EO that is a bit of a myth in the HP soapmaking world. Great video btw and the soap looks fab! (it also 'should' be cured the same length of time you would CP soap which is 4-6 weeks and of course it will improve with age) I did CP for about 2 years but much prefer HP and have been doing that for about 5 years, so much easier and I you don't have to worry about soda ash or soap batter seizing etc.

  • @sarahdavis1198

    @sarahdavis1198

    @@dr.bijaykumarparida7321 no quality difference it is more of a personal preference. HP soap still needs the same amount of cure time as CP. Yes you can make 100% olive oil soap HP, in fact I did it about 8 weeks ago at very high temps with a very steep water discount and I am testing it monthly to see if it improves as other soapmakers more experienced than me say that it doesn't need the long 6-12 month cure time of normal Castile. It does have a different feel to it and can be a bit 'slimy' again that is open to debate. I much prefer animal fats in my soap now as they are resemble our skin oils better than nut or vegetable oils and are very creamy.

    Crockpot no, but anything plastic yes. Lye isn't the issue though -- it's essential oils. There's no lye left on any plastic, metal, or glass after use but essential oils have a tendency to seep into porous materials.

    Hot process soap can get crusty on the top because of heat and moisture loss. Keeping a tight lid on, and stirring, helps to stop that from happening. It's not the end of the world though, and is still good soap.

    Do you ever infuse your own oils? I infused oil with frankincense but the fragrance didn’t come through the finished product using the CP method. I’m wondering if using the HP method and adding the fragrance at the end like you did might help

    Infused oils will never give you the kind of scent you're after in soap. They're used to create color and potentially skin benefit. Essential oils are used for scent and are much different. They're highly concentrated volatile plant oil take far more plant material to make.

    I'm not sure if you still check comments on older videos but I'm going to try and make some Aleppo type soap hot process like it's done in mid-east. Have you tried to make it. The laurel berry oil is expensive and I hope I don't mess it up as I've never made hot process. I am hoping you have a video on it.

    I don't but it's a good idea! Typically, you use about 20% laurel berry oil and the rest olive oil. You might want to save about 5% of the laurel berry oil to stir in after trace 💚

    You can but would need to run the recipe through the soap calculator again to get a new lye amount. It will change slightly if you change any of the oils or their quantities.

    Hiya, cold-process, and hot-process are just two different ways to make a soap recipe. Yes, you can use the recipe, but make it using the cold-process method 👍 For cold process, use less water, though - 2x the amount of lye by weight. You can omit the yoghurt or stir it with a little water (1 TBSP) and add at trace.

    You can use any cold-process soap recipe to make hot-process soap, including smaller 1-lb batches. The risk there is that if the oils/lye-solution are too shallow in the slow cooker, it could splatter up caustic soap batter. Not good. I'd recommend making a full loaf of soap at a time with this method and you can use less expensive oils if you wish. That means you can use my 100% olive oil soap recipe (scale it up to an 800g batch) and use oil from the supermarket (if it's well within the best-by date). lovelygreens.com/simple-castile-soap-recipe-make-olive-oil-soap/

  • @Lovelygreens

    Yes, those ingredients, water, or herbal infusions can do at that point. They may not add creaminess to the soap, but a vegan alternative will make the soap batter more fluid and easier to work with in a similar way to yogurt.

    How long does the grapefruit essential oil scent last in the bars?

    It depends on the grapefruit essential oil. Ordinary versions (the most common) can fade within days/weeks but folded grapefruit essential oil can last months and maybe years.
