We’re getting a NEW 2D ZELDA, with a bit of a twist to keep it fresh, and people are complaining? Insane. This looks amazing, can’t wait

Meh, I'm a little disappointed. Visually this game is barely distinct from a Mario game, and sure it looks like classic Zelda in some ways, but I'm bored of it. I miss when Zelda always had a new and unique artstyle that set it apart from anything else. Legitimately interesting creature and world designs. Now it's just much of the same. I don't even really like BOTW's artstyle, or the music for that matter. I'll consider picking this up but I don't really like new Zelda at all. They lost the plot IMO

Nobody is. Well, some people are, but not for the reasons cited. Inventory not being in a wheel has been part of it.

I wonder what this game is going to hide before release? Example: we didn’t know about the depths in TOTK until leakers let the cat out of the bag a few days before release.

I knew about the depths before the release of TOTK, they showed a few shots of it in the trailers and it was obvious that Link was in some underworld/ underground... in this game... there are rifts that are scattered all over the world map and I believe we will be able to enter them and solve puzzles within them, similar to a shrine, and once we clear the puzzles/challenges within these rifts they will close up on the map and restore that area of Hyrule... Zelda is even seen within one in the trailer so it seems a lot of inspiration from the 3D games are being implemented in EoW...

Honestly I want more weird spin offs and collaborations with other game devs. Hyrule Warriors and Cadence of Hyrule were really fun!

This could open up a Link/Zelda co-op game.

I remember everyone speculating about Zelda being a playable character in TOTK. Very excited for this new title! And we have played as Zelda before in Spirit Tracks, kinda 😅😅

If you go back to the beginning of tears of the kingdom, and and you get the recall ability. Rauru tells you that “what you saw was a mystery, and that perhaps it was a sort of an echo -one that reflects her sheer will”. This makes sense as to why it’s called echos of wisdom.

I must say that this game got me more excited to play than Tears of the Kingdom! Due to the gameplay possibilities especially within the 2D world!

That’s a bold statement. No choice of original type combat will turn a good amount of people off. I just hope they give her the bow of light or something along those lines as well as the ability to make echos. Super excited for it though.

Zelda and link are part of a trinity with Ganon, hoping we get a Ganon staring game someday, we know that there are Timelines where Ganon wins.

If we got a Ganondorf game I would want a linear story about his back story. That has the potential to be super interesting, if done well.

Whether you like the new direction or not, everyone should hope it succeeds. If not, it could be another 10 years before you see another 2d game.

I wish this was a traditional 2d Zelda game with unique items and weapons to suit Zelda and the wand mechanic for puzzles only.

I’m super excited! I’ve always preferred 3D Zelda but this looks adorable and so much fun! It feels like such a breath of fresh air and energy for the franchise and gives me exactly the same vibe and energy the series had post-Ocarina’s immense success: new mechanics, new styles, new stories, the series going in every direction at once… I love it! I saw some people say it doesn’t feel like Zelda, but to me this is exactly what the series is about; every game is so different. There is something for everyone! Remember, we got Wind Waker after Majora’s Mask (I was a teenager then and remember the backlash to the art style, but now it’s considered a classic!) The we got games like Twilight Princess, but also games like Spirit Tracks - in what ways Link travelling Hyrule by train feels like a Zelda game but not this? Anyway this old school fan who also loves the new games is super excited about this!

I am really looking forward to this game. I just hope they gave you a handful of more things you can do besides just spawn enemies and platforms. I don't want it to feel too simple or limited.

If you look at the shot where they open the echo menu, on the left side it shows a d-pad symbol and the Tri Rod is only one direction. I'm hoping this means we will have at least a couple more mechanics to work with.

Very excited for this game! My big hope is that we get a new villain. I have a feeling it will be Ganon again, since it was his staff that opened the rifts, but I’m a bit tired of Ganon being the villain. Zelda as a franchise needs more cool and interesting villains in the roster.

I think part of the reason they've been more reluctant to change the Zelda formula is that Legend of Zelda has had a more serious feel. Mario is goofy and slap-stick, so doing weird things fits with the personality. I think Legend of Zelda will always be a bit more dignified. But this game really looks like a good move to me.

Huge deal because it releases on my birthday and a special edition switch lite too?! definitely picking it up !

Issue is that it tried to imitate links awakenings art style but in reality it somehow looks worse then it, but not bad. It doesn’t look bad but it certainly looks worse compared to the OG links awakening. Links awakening looked more polished.

We NEED a Power game where Ganon is the star!

I'm really excited for this game. Gonna be honest tho, when the trailer 1st started I thought we were getting a Zelda RPG. I still want some kind of Zelda RPG or Paper Zelda, I feel like either of those would be loads of fun

I don't think that anyone is mad that Zelda is a playable character, I personally was interested in there being a playable Zelda for Totk. The thing that bothers me is just that fact that there appears to be a drastic change in combat, the thing that got me hooked on the series was the combat in breath of the Wild, and now the main combat mechanic that was shown was throwing rocks and having moblins fight for you.

EXACTLY! Thank you! I thought I was the only one... I just can't imagine having fun spawning an enemy and waiting for it to attack. Furthermore because the combat system is linked to the echoes system like everything else, imagine if you have to scroll through this totk like inventory ever single time you just want to attack an enemy. Using bait like shown in the trailer even requires you to scroll twice. (They even cut it out to shorten the run time) That's like 10 seconds of effort to defeat a single enemy that most likely respawns when leasing the screen. How can this be a fun mechanic?

@@logandooley378 Well, you've seen the puzzles in totk. Basically all of then had some work arround because of the freedom the ultrahand abillity gave you. Now they are trying to give us a similar freedom with the tri-rod so I'm also a bit worrierd that if they are trying to make a puzzle based game, the tri-rod can make a lot of the Puzzles meaningless. I'd even be fine with this though. The worst thing still is that you might have to invest up to 10 seconds just for one or teo enemies which respawn when reentering the screen.

Finally a Legend of Zelda game where Zelda is the actual protagonist

I love playing as link as he’s one of my favorite characters, and the Zelda games have always been fresh, whether moving from 2d to 3D, using the Wii remotes, open world, interesting mechanics. Yes, The game looks great and interesting with the gameplay but I hope the next big legend of Zelda game returns to Link.

could it be that the echoes ability in the late/post game could lead to an option to build houses and even dungeons. so the long hoped for zelda dungeon builder? zelda could build the dungeons and other players could play them as a link. never really been wild about this feature but can understand why others are excited about it and the opportunity would be ideal.

This was for me by far the most surprising and entertaining announcement in the Direct for this year, and 100% a day one purchase, loved the remake of Links Awakening on the switch a couple of years ago, and a continuation on the artstyle with Zelda as playable character is the best thing they could do. Yes Metroid prime 4 looks ridiculously amazing and is my favorite title of the Direct (you see my avatar, Sylux ftw he owns, hoping to see Trace as well return) and yes Im a HUGE METROID fan, and we all kinda knew it would be shown, but we also know almost guaranteed its going to be a launch title on the Switch succesor besides it being a cross gen game. This Zelda though I look forward to so much can't wait to dive righ into it in September. Thanks Nintendo.

That is exactly what I'm thinking. In another comment I alreaddy wrote a super long Text why I'm a bit worried about the game. Basically, if we really have to do everything with an echo, where is place for innovative dungeon items? How do you design an interesting boss fight with it? How much time do you spend scrolling through your inventory like in totk searching for a speciffic echo you need to use? I just don't know... and that scares me... 😕

I don’t mind it I’m not interested but if I had, I would’ve rather had both link and Zelda as both playable characters with a 2 player coop option.

I think it would be interesting to see a game with the Linkle character

It is too bad that they have not done morewith linkle except for being in the hyrule warriors games except for age of calamity

I wouldn't say it's the best thing to happen to the franchise, but it's certainly a nice change in the formula. Why not play an adventure as her once in a while? Why not have a game where they're both tackling an adventure? Would've been cool if we had a TotK where she was playable and it was co-op. And i like the idea of having her combat style be completely different than Link's, that makes sense. This isnt the same as Abby from TLOU, Kate from GOW, or what the new Joanna Dark now looks like. Personally, I'm looking forward to this.

I am really excited for this game. While I do like BOTW and TOTK, I never finished them. I found myself getting so frustrated with them because they were just so overwhelming. They are great games, I just miss the ones like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. So this new one seems more up my alley.

I'm looking forward to this game but I wish they'd go back to classic style. I miss all of the old items and gameplay tactics. Honestly I'd absolutely love a Majora's Mask reimagining with a larger world and and extra day or two on the timeline to accommodate even more time sensitive and/or intricate side quests and give the NPCs even more life and character to them. Take all inspiration from the original, the 3DS version shouldn't be looked to for any inspiration for it, maybe learn what not to do from it lol. Damn I'd love that. But yes I'm still gonna get and play this one! For sure.

Love this perspective! I would say, though, that I *do* think Nintendo has experimented with other series - esp Animal Crossing. I think it was a big risk to move towards heavily towards a crafting game - compared to the cozy village simulator that previously existed in the franchise.

Tingle did get a game once

It really is just the amount of employees they can put on these projects. Resources are probably tight enough just getting the main line titles out.

I don't mind that you play as Zelda but wish they didn't nerf the puzzles by making them more like BOTW/TOTK where you can solve it any way you want to. Tailored puzzles with specific solutions are much better.

Dropped for a 4th switch consol for Four swords adventures port. Not even remaster. Clean port. Then Nintendo cant seem to muster the interest for even base quallity controle since Pirate bay exploded.

The icing on the cake could have been master mode for TOTK, but oh well. I’ll take anything 😊

Because game journalists said it was better, because huge swathes of people love it for whatever reason (hence the latest 2 mainline games selling more than the rest of the series combined), and, most importantly, the Zelda team themselves believe it's an improvement. I guess we'll have to wait another 10 years until they get obsessed with making the games in another way...

@@gingy1799 I know that, but in the initial rush to get opinions out I saw a ton of doom posting about the supposed quality of echos. The people who actually have thought out opinions took awhile since they had the braincells to realize that rushing out an opinion piece only leads to disaster

I seriously don’t understand and will never understand why some people have such a problem with playing as a female character. There’s so many great games with female protagonist! Tomb Raider, Shantae, and Metroid just to name a few. People need to grow up. Those people are missing out on some great games!

Zelda was "playable" in Spirit Tracks, but she was more of a companion character. You still primarily controlled Link. Here, she's the full focus which hasn't happened since Wand of Gamelon in 1993.

@@SALARIER I was making a distinction between being a playable character and being the main protagonist. This hasn't happened since the cdi games and is the first Nintendo developed game dedicated to her.

I me that would be fun is maybe a Zelda game where you can play as Link, Zelda and Gannondorf working to gather. Or a Gannondorf game that is melee focused.

Have you not played Spirit Tracks or Wand of Gamelon? Both games Zelda is playable. lol Nintendo is only giving fans this because they have been constantly bombarded by people during interviews begging them to make a Zelda standalone since Wand of Gamelon.

You don't play as Zelda in Spirit Tracks. You play as Link that gives orders to Zelda. Wand of Gamelon is not a Nintendo game.

@@Trikeboy2 Zelda’s spirit does actions that you control as the player. That’s playing as zelda. Also Wand of Gamelon was licensed by Nintendo to Panasonic. Nintendo help funded and also took losses on that game. That makes it their game. Regardless if people disliked it or not. I would imagine if the games were a smashing success, Nintendo would happily take credit for them, but since they weren’t, they try to distance and pretend they weren’t involved with their creation which simply isn’t true.

Also, maybe they should pull a reverse card and change Metroid’s protagonist for a game

People are upset any Zelda being the main character? I don’t really know why. Did they not like Tomb Raider games? I’ll grant that we have to watch for any and every company to be woke, but I saw nothing in the direct that spoiled lead anyone to think this game is woke. We’ll see in time but so far it looks great to me and I plan on getting it.. and a second copy for my daughter who may or may not have been named after this character

"has not expanded out" I'm gonna have to disagree with ya there cap'n. We just got Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. That is quite the leap from the typical mainline Zelda game.

I've never had a desire to play as Zelda. And this didn't do much to change it. This is my favorite series, so I'll still give it a try

Hmm. I have mixed feelings about it. I don’t this is the best thing to happen to the Zelda series just because you are playing as zelda. It’s just a different kind of zelda game. That’s it for now. We have to play it to see what it’s like. But going by what we know so far, it seems to strip some core elements that Zelda fans have loved in other games. Not that there is anything wrong with doing something different, but I hope they don’t do just this from now on even though I highly think that won’t happen 😅. I will still likely try the game out before giving my full opinion on it since I play all zelda games but just because the series is called the legend of zelda and she isn’t the main character, doesn’t mean that the series was always wrong with link as the main character. Link was the central character in the series and in Zelda’s story/lore. That’s the fact. I am bummed that there won’t really be any sword fighting in this game though 😂. If I was going to play as zelda as a main character, I would rather play as sheik. They could do some cool stuff with her ninja like abilities. There was apparently a cancelled game with her.

I don’t want a sword necessarily unless it’s towards the end of the game. That would be cool. But I wouldn’t mind other weapons she gets later in the game. That would be interesting. If she just had a sword the whole time I think that isn’t a great choice. I like the way Nintendo thinks. They are always thinking big picture. If you give people the boring choices, you’ve lost everything in a creative field. Not to say there’s anything wrong with your preferences. The combat in Zelda games to me is way below the quality of the puzzles in terms of importance. I just hope this gameplay doesn’t ruin the dungeons. That’s a huge concern to me.

@@Ray-dl5mp I get what you are saying, but I meant that sword fighting is a core/base part of Zelda series identity. Link can use other stuff a lot to to get through the game and Zelda now as well. I am not saying it just be sword play and that’s it. It’s just a necessary part to me. All prior Zelda games have sword fighting and they never got boring. To most people anyway. I am not against being different, I just don’t want it bring this or totk style Zelda all the time because even that will be too much. Just like how some people think the Zelda series is boring the way it is. I get puzzles are important and you place a high priority on them but to me and from every Zelda game I played, having some sword action and seeing link fight different types of enemies with it combine with other magic and abilities is one of the best parts of a Zelda game to me. It’s my opinion of course and everyone has one. Just I like what I like.

@@sabataEX yes it’s a good take. I can’t say the sword fighting isn’t important as it’s a core part of the look and character of link. So not saying you’re wrong. I’m just trying to be open minded. I do agree that this TOTK style could hurt this game. But I’m not focused on the combat as much as the puzzles. It could ruin the puzzles in a sense if it’s like TOTK and it feels too easy or random and not really a puzzle. That’s what I’m most scared of. And I am a little worried about the combat I’ll admit. I do hope she gets a bow and sword later in the game.

Zelda did have a sword on her to use in twilight princess in a certain scene I believe but we didn’t get to see her use it. I can see her getting a bow though. She used a bow in a few games. Loved to see her use medallions too since they are used in some 2d Zelda games and they are very powerful. I did notice the totk elements in this game like that void that took link and other stuff seems to be like a version of the gloom in totk. Zelda’s hairstyle is similar to her botw/totk look. I think will be fine for you in this game but if this game is taking too much from totk, then this games puzzles will be not much of anything and you can break this game easy like totk. We will have to wait see

Very unhappy about this direction for my favorite franchise. Sad to see. This game will be good, but nothing I’m excited for.

There hasn’t been any confirmed grievances from the usual suspects. If anything people may view it as a game hat just isn’t for them, though no - there hasn’t been any outrage

I love this announcement, and I'm really looking forward to this new game, but... I think there is something to be said for a series that keeps a specific theme and game type. Sherlock Holmes stories are generally about Sherlock Holmes, and he's most likely going to be doing detective work. I'm not saying that innovation is bad, but wanting Zelda games to focus on certain characters, and to be a certain genre, isn't a terrible thing. However, there are certain innovations that would be very bad for the series as a whole. People don't really want a Sherlock Holmes story to star, and focus on Watson, and depict him starting a baseball league. Sure, there might be a few people who find that interesting, but as a whole it's not what people want out of the series.

I have 2 problems with this game. 1- The name should have been Legend of Zelda: The Missing Link 2- They should have announced a collector's edition that would mirror the Link's Awakening one. Imagine a Zelda Amiibo to accompany Link. The marketing dept. needs a good shake. But jokes aside, I'm so excited!

Is Nintendo working on a new Zelda game for the switch 2? I want to see breath of the wild 2 or a tears of the kingdom 2 it has to be bigger and better open world I’m going to get this game when it comes out

@Jamie61571 Uh.... Sorry to burst your bubble but Breath of the Wild 2 is Tears of the Kingdom. Plus the developers all ready said they will have a different map for the next 3d Legend of Zelda so a TOTK 2 is off the table.

They are working on a new Zelda game for the switch two. But they have said it won’t be a direct sequel to BOTW or TOTK but another stand alone game in the series. They might carry forward certain elements and mechanics from the games, though, of course.

Idk, gameplay seems kinda boring. The first game and the last game are easily the most interesting

literally no one has ever complained about Zelda being playable, it's people on the left side of the political spectrum the only ones saying that to get a reaction from people on the opposite side.

If you have a look through some of this comment section, you'll see that there are actually quite a few people complaining, so the "literally no one" bit is false.

3D Zeldas suck after Majoras Mask. This should've been the pivot back then: more focus on exploration and puzzles without any grind.

Have you met the Zelda fan base? Nintendo is terrified of changing The Legend of Zelda too much because such a vocal part of the fanbase is still mad that every Zelda game isn't a remake of Ocarina of Time. I'm not saying that they shouldn't expand. I love it when the Zelda team tries new things, but there is always this nagging voice screaming in the background that whatever Zelda game it is isn't Ocarina of time. It is getting annoying.

I’ve gotta disagree, I think this is a terrible move for the Zelda franchise. The game looks boring and just from the small trailer we got it doesn’t even feel like a Zelda game. I’m just glad that they made it a smaller game in the links awakening engine I would have been pissed if they made this game the next big 3D title. Hopefully we get a normal Zelda game soon….
