I really like in ep 1 how they paid this sort of tribute to the Daredevil series by laying out a fight scene without any cuts (as far as I remember) & Daredevil pulling the shelf down on Echo like Bullseye has on him as a finisher .

I can understand the hate “The Marvels” got for being the some old MCU Formula, but not “Echo”. “Echo” was a breath of fresh air the MCU desperately needed! The mature content actually serves a purpose with characters you can attach yourself to and the continuation of the original Netflix series is something I’m very happy is happening.

Keep praising mediocrity and youll just get more mediocrity. That breath of fresh air Netflix DD already did and this show tried to copy it but it just ended up being disrespectful to Kingpins and DDs actors.

@@takumifujiwara9181 I’ll admit the first episode had big pacing issues. It could really used an additional episode to flesh out the relationship between Maya and Kingpin as well as how DD and Hawkeye fit into the story in a bigger sense, rather than just being glorified cameos. But this is Maya’s story. Not Kingpin’s. Not DD’s. Not Hawkeye’s. From Episode 2 and beyond that’s what we get and, personally, I believe they did a good job and moving in the right direction for future MCU projects.

John has his right to his own opinion. Given he feels Shang Chi and Man Of Steel are in his top 5 superhero movies, it shows he has wacky taste that doesn’t align with mine. I hated the Echo show. And I watched it eagerly without external judgement. On its own merits, it doesn't achieve much in terms of storytelling. The show felt like it was made to achieve other things (important things like the exploration of Native American culture, the lives of the differently abled-the deaf and the amputees, and some levels of fan service-Daredevil and Kingpin), except a good narrative. It doesn't earn its place in its own show or in the wider MCU. I've held out way more hope for Marvel than many, and I have to accept that they don't make stuff for the people who they courted while they grew into a juggernaut film/TV studio. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is.

the show was garbage. it made fisk into a joke, it made him look like he was vulnerable on the subject of his dad when in reality in the daredevil series (that the echo showrunners claimed they produced the show to be faithful to daredevil series) fisk found comfort in the white cracked wall going as far to buy his most prized possession being the rabbit in a snow storm painting. one of fisk’s most important traits was that he believed his father’s death to be necessary so he obtained this twisted pov on reality where he killed everyone who wronged him. fisk literally ran away crying at the end which he would never do no matter what powers effected him. also at the end it teased fisk running for nyc mayor when in reality he would never think about because all of new york knows what fisk did with the fbi because of rays dying proclamation that was spread at fisk and vanessas wedding.

The first few episodes were great, but then it got to the end of episode 4 and it never felt they set up a finale, especially considering the finale was 30 mins long. I’m ok with having a short episode count and short episodes if it fits the story, but they tried to pack in so much of Mayas ancestry and her relationship with Kingpin, that everything felt either unresolved or rushed to its conclusion by the end.

"It's just another grandma, it's just another pawn shop owner..." That is the culture which has been missing in Hollywood representation of indigenous culture and often is misrepresented. Not criticizing your critic of the show more of the lens you are watching it from. Expecting a "Wakanda-Talokan" experience of culture for every culture is not necessarily being authentic to said culture and often problematic due to exoticizing a culture just to keep a "westernized" audience entertained. The first pawn shop scene in question was there to point that out and establish more realistic levels of representation moving forward in the show.

It was rushed.. story was good at times.. other times it was poorly paced and disjointed. The fights were badass though. Except for the finale which was kinda lame. However, i like the character. It was different. I think ALL of the blame is the editing and some of the writing. But overall, i see the potential and I'd watch season 2 without hesitation.

See this is why I don’t put ANY stock in trailers. I don’t like going in with any kind of expectation. I didn’t need this show to be as good as or better than anything I’d seen in Marvel. I just needed it to be good. And I thought it was quite good. I saw one trailer and that was it. I got what I was looking for in this series though, trailer or no trailer. I got an interesting character, some cool action, and an intriguing look at a mythical Native American culture. That’s all I needed. I don’t know why people hinge expectations off the trailer but say they’re leaving expectations at the door just to complain after they’ve seen it that it wasn’t like the trailer. It makes no sense to me.

I hoped for more Daredevil and I see John and Robs points, but for me I enjoyed the native stuff, the feeling of being in a family on the fringe and being on the fringe yourself. Plus I really enjoyed Graham Greene and Biscuits which is a sentence I wasn’t expecting to write last week. LOVED Biscuits’ contribution to the finale!

I thought it was ok. I did want an explanation to how Kingpin survived point blank gunshot to the face. Hell, he should at least have a hole in his face. It’s the same disappointment I felt when Billy from Punisher survived his face being destroyed with just a few scrapes. The thing that let me down was a more menacing Fisk. When he shows up for the first time, I feel like there should have been some serious chaos going on in moment that would strike the fear of God into Maya. Like idk, him fighting her out of straight blood thirsty anger, throwing her around and screaming with rage. Never really happened. Also, the final fight let me down. If they would have done something similar to the fight in the first episode, I would have accepted the crazy “shared power unto people” approach. It was ok.

I just finish the show, and I have to say I disagree with John I really enjoyed this show more then I thought I would. I also found it intriguing what they did with kingpin I did find him whinny or weak. For me the kingpin has always been a character who has extreme emotions when it comes to people he cares about and maya was one of those people she was a daughter to him. I would recommend this show. Also the performance across the board and the different character I found so enjoyable and real.

When I heard there were 5 episodes I was worried they would rush Maya's vision quest (from the comics) and they would not give enough attention to her culture. There was no vision quest at all and her culture was reduced to a powwow at night plus the repeated flashbacks of her maternal ancestors. A powwow can last a week and there is a lot going on surrounding one. A missed opportunity. I wanted to see Biscuits wreck some baddies with a bow (a skill he begrudgingly learned as a youth that cut into his gaming sessions)

I agree with y'all. I think John overstated how bad it is on a few things, but not by much. The story starts out pretty boringly, robs the weight from things that should have a lot of importance, and resolves in anticlimax. It never delivers on the promises of the trailer, and ultimately is mediocre at best. Episode 3 is the only one I finished thinking, "that was good." 4 was fine, and 1, 2, and 5 would all get subpar ratings from me.

I don't get how people are saying they enjoyed the show. Like, did you process what was on the screen? They never establish why Fisk was so attached to Maya, and vice versa, despite her father being in the picture. She clearly cares a lot about her father (enough to attempt to murder Fisk)...yet is clearly closer, and takes after Fisk...why? Did she spend more time with Fisk, than her father? Why didn't she just shoot him again, when he constantly made himself vulnerable to her? Why did Fisk have her father killed? The show was trying to show that she was similar to Fisk; kindred spirits. Why does all that rage, and hate, that's been building in her for decades just go away? How did those memories from her ancestors at all relate to her arc, at the moments they occured? They don't even define what her powers are, and if her mom had them....how did she die in that car crash? Super strength and healing...but she dies in a car crash, while Maya can jump off a speeding train, and bounce of the roof of a speeding truck with no injuries... before she activates her powers??? It's like they couldn't decide what story they wanted to tell, so they half-assed everything! Even during the DD fight, they had DD be less vicious with her compared to the men she came in with... despite him knowing she was killing people, too. Hell, since she became so good and this show is canon to the Netflix DD series...where the fuck was Maya? Why did Fisk have to manipulate Bullseye into becoming a DD killing machine...but not her? Too many characters, that were just irrelevant to the main plot and took away from what should've been the main characters in Maya, Fisk and either the uncle (if they stick with just the crime story) or the grandma (if they wanted to still keep the magic angle). Also, it's stupid af that Fisk would know this girl for 20 years and never learn sign language and/or never got an expert to teach her how to read lips so that she could function on her own. It's super convenient that everyone she hasn't seen for 20 years are still super adept at sign language and also happen to be the only people she has to talk to. Just a messy show, full of missed opportunities. The sad thing is that she'll probably never be seen again, because they had no faith in the show to begin with.

I love her facial expressions and whenever she uses ASL to communicate. Also young Maya is like the little girl in Godzilla Minus One good. The supporting characters were also great. Biscuits and the grandpa were absolutely hilarious, and I liked the actress who plays Maya's cousin Bonnie (she also voices kahhori in What If). There's definitely some brutal and other kind of moments that makes sense why the rating is TV MA. All great.
