I grew up with all that wonderful stuff, I am meanwhile 70, this music was so important when we were 13/14 years old! We could not buy the original LPs, they were too expensiv for us, but we had a Philips-Taperecorder and hung hours and hours on the radiostation. Meanwhile I have all these records and I don`t want to miss them...

I was only 5 when the Byrds released their version of this song, and being a jazz freak since I was 16, I missed it completely until my first viewing of the documentary last year. I love that it follows no standard pop form. I just listened to three other versions of it-the original by Pete Seeger, the Byrds’ version and one by John Denver. This version seems to draw influences from each of those, and does so very, very effectively. The wordless vocal harmonies at the end seem to me to be informed by both the Byrds and John Denver, but to me, go to an even more satisfying place than their versions. Beautiful arrangement and performance of a wonderfully simple yet sophisticated and surprising song.

Growing up in Southern California in the 1960s, this was the sound of my PEOPLE. I was a wee bit too young for this scene but as soon as I became an adult and was allowed to buy myself rock and roll records, this is the music I collected and have to this day on my hard drive. It's the music I can't live without.

Really well done film, spotlighting the singular but mighty sound out of S. California and its influence on the British beat. This song is pure joy to listen to. Dylan and Beck get the sound right - I know they did, I was there.

Saw the film tonight. This was another chilling, tear-jerking song on the film. Watching Seeger, then the Byrds do this was beyond beautiful.

Excellent performance of this song, combining fidelity to the original with a bit of personal update. Beautiful, good for choking up with a nostalgia that's genuine and earned.

This is a GREAT version, thanks J & R (Jake and Roger)!! (Check out Judy Collins' oddly acoustically threatening version that Roger did.) Here's the original lyrics by Idris Davies, who was hurt in a mining accident in Wales in the mid-1920's: Gwalia Deserta XV O what can you give me? Say the sad bells of Rhymney. Is there hope for the future? Cry the brown bells of Merthyr. Who made the mineowner? Say the black bells of Rhondda. And who robbed the miner? Cry the grim bells of Blaina. They will plunder willy-nilly, Say the bells of Caerphilly. They have fangs, they have teeth Shout the loud bells of Neath. To the south, things are sullen, Say the pink bells of Brecon. Even God is uneasy, Say the moist bells of Swansea. Put the vandals in court Cry the bells of Newport. All would be well if - if - if - Say the green bells of Cardiff. Why so worried, sisters, why Sing the silver bells of Wye.

Yes, of course there were great song writers before the mid sixties. But, the pop music leading up to that time was not Cole Porter and the other greats. It was the cheap nonsense pop that had taken over. The great stuff had been displaced by junk. When you hear BOB Dylan talk about it, he didn't write good songs because Cole Porter couldn't. He digs all the song book writers and just recorded a lot of their stuff. It was the silly stuff he was rejecting. So when you talk about the Echo people, they are trying maybe to "get back" to good song writing, away from the silly stuff in the 50s and early 60s. Bob was not trying to move away from Stephen Foster or others. He records their music. He was moving away from real empty kind of stuff.
