Ebike Camping Trip - I Need New Equipment!

I got my fat tire, all terrain ebike out for a chilly overnighter along Montana's Missouri River and had fun, even though I froze that night. As soon as I got home, I ordered a down sleeping bag and a proper tent! Us cargo trailer camper folk aren't used to sleeping on the ground!

Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If your into being off-grid and boondocking, or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

I found you two from interest in cargo trailers, since then I've grown to just like seeing Linda and yourself. Content may be all over the place but what keeps me coming back is I believe you two are real. I've been in youtube and got away from cable TV years ago. I've seen corporations basically take over channels with once loved content and travel. I understand the money but as usual the little guy who made these channels are forgotten.. I'm here as long as you two are producing. Envious at times of your travels and the way you do it.. stay safe 🙏

You know it is crazy how many of these videos I have seen from other makers, & I have been inspired to do the same thing, except without a video of the adventure. The video production is more challenge than I would take on, but they are fun to watch. There are all sorts of adventures just 30 miles away.

Rick, you and Linda are delightful and having you in my living room on tv is like having friends visiting and telling me of all your adventures while showing me videos. You've taught me so much and/or showed things that my husband and I use to do. And on the note of estrogen, it's also in our beef big time unless you buy grass fed. I think it was great that you shared that info and not a point for anyone to get angry at you. Of course you and I know that there are some out there that look for any opportunity to argue. Doing this video was awesome, but don't put yourself out just to appease those who want to be critical. We understand with Linda still recovering and gas prices being what they are. And honestly, your channel may save lives in the future just with learning how to make things last longer like your upcoming video on butane stoves, and like today's video on how to stay warm in less than perfect conditions. We need to all be friends these days and appreciate one another. I know I sure appreciate you and Linda. God bless and stay safe!!

You obviously were well prepared and not too far from home which would keep you out of real trouble. When Steve and I lived in Alaska we would often snow camp in temperatures between 10 and 25 degrees F.. Here are a couple of cold camping tips that we used: we’d cut a piece of Reflectix to use in addition to our sleeping pad. We enjoyed that so much that we eventually pieced together a footprint for the inside of our tent out of Reflectix. We sometimes fill a Nalgene bottle (or a Mason jar if we’re van camping) with hot water to put in our sleeping bag as a hot water bottle. We’d totally wrap up in our survival blanket like a burrito. It’s a little noisy but a lot warmer! If Costco goes back to selling the Double Diamond down throws get a few. You can roll up in one while inside your bag. Hammock sleepers use them for under quilts, they’re so light and warm. There’s also a story of a guy who broke his leg out skiing in the backcountry who credits the Costco down throw with saving his life. In the real cold the authorities warned Alaskans to not combine alcohol with outdoor activities as it causes heat loss. The surface blood vessels dilate (giving us that flushed, happy look) and heat leaves the body. I can neither confirm nor deny breaking this rule, as a toddy is always enjoyed after an active day, while getting ready to sleep rough. We also had an official saying: “cotton kills”. It holds body moisture next to the skin and the evaporation causes cooling. That’s what we want in the summer, of course! Some poly or wool clothes, a wool or poly beanie and you’d have been toasty! I miss Linda, but love to be on adventures with you! The riverside chat about your fossils and your friends’ finds were so interesting!! Thank you for your Lifecraft channel. Many of us enjoy knowing a humble, well spoken guy and a gal who can fix their own stuff, can tell a story, put together a nicely done video of their adventures and let us hang out with them for a bit! My best to Linda!!

It doesn't matter to me what you put on your channel y'all are real and I enjoy your adventures. I agree with your theory regarding young men today and I feel it's partially from food like milk, eggs, chicken etc. that contain high levels of estrogen. On the other hand young boys growing up in fatherless homes and homes of same sex couples does not help the situation! I'm a scotch and pipe smoker myself,so keep the video's coming!

Rick in the past 2 days I’ve learned 2 new terms: RV = Residential Vehicle and now Lifecrafters! At 50 I tried hiking Haleakala after having done 3 ninety foot dives two days before. I was heading for Paliku and had the worst case of altitude sickness. At the cabin on the floor had to turn around and hike out! Will never forget that! Gas prices are making my stays on BLM land the full 14 days. Have to be back in Kansas mid-May but learning to conserve and eat less meat. I figure though it’s still doable, though don’t eat out or spend time at campgrounds. Hope Linda is doing better and not getting too spoiled!

Good point about the water. A few years ago I read a book by Seth Seigel titled "Troubled Water, what's wrong with what we Drink". It's not just estrogen, but every pharmaceutical produced, as well as industrial pollutants, animal meat industry, etc. The same mess is found in most bottled waters as well. He explains how the municipal water systems simply can't test and filter water for every pollutant especially at the levels we waste it in toilets, baths, lawns, etc. I immediately researched, purchased, and installed a 7 stage RO water filter system for the house...

Even bottled water has bad taste that seems unnatural to me. Maybe it is from the plastic bottle or some chemical to treat the water but I do not drink even store bought water unless I take it home and filter again.

I'm thinking it may be better right now to either bring back mountain water to filter and drink or to go the RO method like you mentioned. This is crazy what's happening.

@Gonagain, hot water bottles are a life saver. A bottle of hot water will not last completely through the night but it will give you a few hours of restful sleep. These plastic bottles can't take the heat of boiling water without shrinking so I heat ~3\4 to boiling but then pour the 1/4 back in to lower the temperature. I only heat about 1/2 if it is already warm. Hot water bottles are safer than other heating methods. I've heard of a lot of people dieing in tent fires.

  • @gonagain

Thank you for the reminder about hot water bottles. A lot of folks use the chemical heating packets, too, but nothing beats a comforting warm bottle in your sleeping bag.

Oh man, you went bikepacking! That is so much fun! Glad to see you got to experience that, Rick. I've done lots of it myself and it's for sure a memory-maker activity. There's something so pure that is hard to describe about strapping your kit to a bike, leaving right from your doorstep and being all "Second star to the right and straight on til morning" about it. Even more fun with a few friends or family [or a crazy neighbor] along for the ride. And yes, the first few times you do it you're always going to be a bit funky and take along too much stuff and that's just fine. There's no need to worry about having all the fancy kit. That comes after you get addicted to it. Like you alluded to with Steve [he's awesome!], Just go with what you got and have a good time which you obviously did. And now you've made me want to go be a bike hobo yet again ;-) And best wishes to Linda. I'm glad to hear she's healing up well. You two are rad! Looking forward to seeing you two out there again. Keep gettin' after it and happy travels! And thanks so much for sharing this trip. It honestly made me smile. As for the "variety channel" aspect, I'm down with that! It keeps things interesting.
