Eaton Fuller Roadranger Gearbox: Splitting Gears & Using the Splitter Hi/Low Range & RANGER SELECTOR

RANGE SELECTOR and SPLITTER EXPLAINED
Luke Watson explains how the splitter works and how to split gears on a truck with a roadranger gearbox. Road Rangers make 13-speed, 10-speed, 9-speed, 15-speed and 18-speed transmissions and these types of gear boxes have splitters - this is how to use them correctly.

~ ~ ~
How to Split Gears UP:
Step One - speed the truck up to meet the next gear and pre-select the HI
Step Two - release accelerator and HI will be engaged
How to Split DOWN:
Step One - slow the truck down to meet the lower gear and move the HI/LOW SPLITTER SELECTOR to LO
Step Two - apply gentle acceleration until LO is engaged.

This gap between gears is very evident in smaller trucks. I was moving house for my sister a few weeks ago and we hired a truck. As you probably know rental vehicles are almost always auto. Lovely to drive Isuzu 14t GVM truck with beautifully comfy seats but it had one bad problem. It was only 6 speed. So, as we were travelling the Putty Rd between Windsor and Singleton it's quite a hilly and twisty road. The truck really really really needed a gear between 4th and 5th. I'd have it in gear select mode locked to 4th and even fully loaded it would pick up speed no problem but when I changed to 5th it would die in the arse. Would've been so handy to have a gear in between there.

Double clutching helps reduce stress on gearbox components by matching the engine and gearbox speeds. It's a good habit even with gearboxes that have synchros. It might sound complicated and difficult if you're not used to it, but it takes very little practice to get it right and once you get used to it, it becomes second nature. Can help your gearbox live a lot longer.

Shift pattern is very similar to the Volvo 16 speed. Nice to say you have 18 gears but if you look at the shift pattern you have only 8 gears with a splitter same as the Volvo box, You dont have to split every gear all the time. Climbing steep hills I split shift when changing up, full gear when changing down. Running light just full gear changes. U need to understand your rev range and torque parameters. At times heavily loaded moving uphill I use no clutch and the jake to pull the revs back faster giving me a quick change otherwise by the time you change you have lost speed and have to try again or stay in the one gear until the road flattens out. I find these videos interesting, something that wasn't available when I obtained my licence. Something I drove a while back had 5X4 Clark boxes (20 gears) with two sticks in the cab and on letting go of the steering wheel, you needed two hands, could split the gears quite well.

For this particular truck... yes. I've driven many trucks and some respond (i.e. change from HI-LO and LO-HI) to the throttle off... whilst others respond to the clutch. So try both methods and see what works for your truck. Upset - the good thing about truck gearboxes... if you do something wrong you know! Is grinds/crunches or it goes to ghost gear... nothing.

You first accelerate at 5 low to the max rpm then u release the accelerator and press the splitter switch to set it to 5 high then u hit the desired rpm, then u have to preselect and reset the splitter switch before changing the gear to 6 low. Am I right about this pattern? If I’m doing it right then my question is that do I keep accelerating in 5 high while I reset the splitter switch to the low setting before releasing the accelerator and shifting to 6 low or do I release the accelerator before resetting the splitter switch to the low setting and then go clutch neutral clutch 6 low accelerate? English is not my first language so please bear with me.

My brand new 2022 114SD freightliner won’t engage or grab the high split unless I accelerate into it half the time. Pretty sure something is wrong with it. It’s like it drops the gear. Example. 1234 flip to high, 5low, pre select, roll off the throttle for 5hi, but it never grabs 5hi and will drop right to idle unless I throttle it up and it catches, audibly clunking.

If it is a synchromesh gearbox - the manufacturer's usually advise single clutch. If it is a crashbox or non-synchro then the manufacturer usually advises double clutch. For many synchro gearboxes - the crawler gear (1st) is a non-sychro gear - so the only way to engage that gear is to double the clutch or bring the truck to a stop - then engage the gear.

It would be neat to try shifting a right hand drive vehicle that is manual with the left hand. It would feel weird at first. Urban mail delivery in Australia is done using motor scooters, bicycles, or e-trikes, so there is no need for such a vehicle. Rural delivery is done from regular vehicles - in those areas there is enough space for a car or van to pull up to mailboxes on the driver's side.
