Pretty good video. Only thing is the description of a 15speed. You don’t split every gear in low range. You have 5 super low gears if needed. With deep reduction in gauged, shift up to DR5 then come out of DR, go to 4L to 5L then high range and run through 5 gear patter.

Amazing video. I am currently on my 3rd week of CDL Training and next week I test. I have everything down to a T, but the only thing I need to touch up on is my down shift. My class makes us double clutch to up shift and down shift, but I am confident that within, my next week I will have it down to 2nd nature. Great video and tips!

Thank you Mr Dean for teaching some of us here, for me here in Kenya (Africa) we do different kinds of gear shifting for example 1》 Mitsubishi motors it's a 12 speed manual you split from gear 1 to 5. 2》 isuzu does not have a splitter it has two kinds of neutral gearbox first you engage four lower gears after that you pull the gear stick towards the right and start shifting the other four high gears 3》 Eaton gearbox like the one you are showing us which is a bit more different we do 1 to 8 in two different gear neutral positions and then you shift the nob to high position and do the same 1 to 8 and reverse gear.

All great stuff, and I love your content, but on the 13, 15 and 18, you have low, and then first 1st and when you shift to the high side you go back to first (to the left and up) on the 10 speed, 1st gear is in the low position (all the way to the left and down) and when you shift to the high side Instead of going over and up into first you have to pull it all the way over and down into what would normally be the low position but in the ten speed it is the first gear position.

    Lots of people mistake a 9 speed for a 15. 15 speeds don't have a LO gear, it's 1st and 6th plus 5 lower gears (deep reduction. A 15 speed shifts like this... DR 1,2,3,4,5 - LR 4,5 - HR 6,7,8,9 & 10. (according to the 15 speed RT & RTX label on my Ford L9000😊)

I was always nervous about going up a hill and my RPMs start dropping to where I need to downshift and missing the gear. I personally find it easier to drop down TWO gears so you have that little bit of time to get your downshift in. Then you can upshift a gear if needed.

Great video. Drove for my first time this past weekend on a Peterbilt w/ Paccar and an Eaton Fuller 10-speed. It was super tricky. I ran through the gears twice successfully. I picked up some good tips from your video. I should have been shifting at lower RPMs. I used way too much of the clutch. All in all, it was a fun and challenging experience. Can't wait to get more seat time!

Most of the way through my CDL course right now, and they're teaching us on mostly 10-speed manuals. The down-shifting is definitely a pain, and what they're telling us to get us through the course is to just jump straight from whatever high gear we're in to 6th at about 25mph to make a turn. I personally intend to work on my down-shifting a bit more once I get a job of my own and a truck to practice with. Here's hoping it's a manual, though the flatbed company I'm mostly looking at is mostly automatic.

I noticed that too 😂 Personally, I prefer to always start in a Lo or 1st gear regardless of weight to make it easier on the clutch and the engine. Once I’m rolling I will shift the next few gears between 900-1,000 RPM to make it even smoother to get rolling. If you shift right you should never feel the truck shift and only hear the engine sound change.

  • @ricardonelson8263

I play your game everyday, the semi that I learnt to drive on the brakes were too sharp its like there was almost no room to use it just to slow down as you touch it you feel yourself leaning forward, so before and even after it was fixed we would allow the truck to roll and allow the rpm to drop then we downshift. I still downshift like that and I mostly use the engine brake when im loaded. only use it empty when im in the city the engine brake on this N14 is no joke.

A lot of students do not understand that if they take the road test on an automatic, they will put that as a restriction on your CDL. But if you take your test on a manual transmission. Your certified for automatic or stick with no restrictions

So many different transmissions, weight plays a huge role in selecting the right transmission for your truck! The lighter the load the less gears you will need! I hual exclusively loads that are often lighter than the trailer weight, I don't need the split gears, so I have a 10 speed (BTW the 'low' selector on your shift lever IS actually first gear, the display is done this way because reverse and second are the same gear normally). The 10 speed is a standard "H" pattern but uses the "lo" gear as first and sixth (high range "lo"), Super 10's are a "W" pattern and i found to be a pain in the a**. Using your Jake to reduce rpm while shifting up can do damage to your motor, there is so much pressure in the cylinders, when doing this, it can break head bolts. Remember the Jake brake basically turns you 600hp motor into a giant compressor, without the pressure of momentum (otherwise known as backpressure) forcing the motor over TDC it has nothing to stop the pistons from slapping around in the cylinders.

You should make a video of the maintenance service intervals on a brand new tractor and as it get older from 0 miles up 600k miles et . From when you needed new steer tires to drive tires from brakes to drums to oil change and oem shocks etc. And what the cost to operate it was for 24 months to 36, 48 etc. The miles driven in between steer tire changes and drive tire changes and which brand you used. Now that would be better then just fuel mileage on a brand new tractor

And ronan. U have a retard explaining. The reduction comes from the diff ratio between a 10 and an 18. An eaton 10 direct has a same 1st gear as its rtlo 18spd. Trans’s with lower 1st gears are the 8LL 9LL dump trans’s. They have 36-1 1st gears. Where as the non OD 10 has 14.4 or the 18 has 14.4.

(I live in Australia and it’s flat).. Our road trains are going 1600, 1700 using every gear pulling 200 ton..

My advice would be to completely forget everything you learned when driving a manual car. Driving a truck is a completely different world, and once you master shifting you’ll get addicted to how easy it is to run through the gears, and how much easier it is to shift compared to a car. We were all beginners at one point or another so stick with it and you’ll master shifting, and learn what your truck likes so regardless of weight you always know the best shift pattern.

I understand the desire to have all your bases covered with something like an 18-speed, but that just seems like too much shifting and switch fuckery to me. Too bad they don't make a 14-speed H pattern with only a single high/low switch. Run it up once in low, switch to high and reset position, then run it up again. Nice and simple and should be enough gears to get the job done, but IDK because I'm not a trucker. I mean, could they not do an 18-speed as a 6-speed H-pattern with a 3-stage low/med/high range?

That's gotta be the most representative demostration of the whole 18 speed patern. Never seen anyone else actualy demostrating each and every gear on the stick, including the splits. However,.....correct me if I'm wrong, but on the 18 speed, you're just using the speeds from 2nd and up, right? The normal "H" patern. You're not using the one that's down and left, the very low gear. The one under the reverse. That position gives us another 4 ratios, making it a total of 20 gear ratios. Just for the forward movement. Is that "Lo" positon the equivalent to the "C" position on the european gearboxes?. The crawler gears?. You never mentioned that spot. So basicaly, on an 18 speed, you're only using 16 speeds. So why do they call it 18 speed then? 😊 it could be called a 20 speed. Or a 24, if you count the 4 reverse gears😂

  • @riccardo3921

You are overthinking it and comparing Europe to North America is like comparing apples to oranges: it’s 1-2-3-4 each has two splits making 8 ; now 8 each you can have lo and hi Range so it’s 16; The lo can be split and that makes an 18; it’s not rocket science

Stopping the truck without applying the service brake is cool, but there is a nuance. This can only be done on an empty road, when you do not create obstacles for other road users with your smooth deceleration. Otherwise, you're forcing the driver behind you to apply the service brake because they can't see what's going on ahead. Respect other road users.
